I think the real world war 3 will be fought with the germs.
Germ warfare labs are still going on strong all over the world. Regular labs discover things to kill while seeking cures. The technology gets cheaper and more portable all the time.

Read The White Plague. A fairly old book. But it is sci social fi, often predictive.

Some day the enemy nation may simply die in their sleep, never knowing that the war was on. The attackers having been immunized. The tech is getting to the level of home brewing, in an extremists basement.
In the book, the plague was spread in such an ingenious and simple way. Very cost effective.

WW III will happen because people want it to happen. N Korea would like to start controlling the Pacific much like Japan did in the early 1940's and intimidate the US. Iran wants to bring every nation in the world "down to it's knees" and Islamic terrorist want and belive it's time for the "Great Jyhad." If and when there's a WW III, I don't see it as being Armagedon. I guess that would depend more upon how many nukes would be used during the conflict.

Anyhow, if there's suppose to be a "End of the World" Let's leave it up to the gods. I don't think they need our help to end the world.

I can't help but remember an old quote from some place. It went something like I don't know how WWIII will be fought but WW IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

It does seem that we learn little from the past and tend to repeat the same mistakes over and over. I wonder if we will ever quit until we manage to kill off every living thing on this planet?

In my opinion, a much better example of Herbert's writing than his more famous (and continously raped by his son) Dune series.

Hard to believe that book is almost 25 years old now. I picked it up when it was reviewed in DRAGON way back when that magazine was actually worth reading. I remember reading it in one sitting. I think I'm going to have to reread it and see if it still holds true to the test of time.

Thanks for making me think of a book that I've not thought of in awhile.

Hmmm, I can see a theme coming along here. The last couple of books I've reread recently have been "The Andromeda Strain" "The Judas Gene" & "The Antrax Mutation".

The bush administration is already playing down the North Korea nuclear test saying it was probably a conventional bomb. They dont want to waste their time on a country that has no oil. Bushes own intelligence estimates that it will take 10 years for Iran to make a bomb. Iran is the priority though. The Eisenhower and Enterprise carrier groups will be there by about Oct. 21. Expect war there between then and the elections.
