gooddogbenji -> Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:15:31 PM)

Alrighty.  I have been absent for a few days, and I'm curious as to where the "We miss you benji" thread is.

Also, the reason for the name of this thread is that my computer went kersplat.  Really.  My hard drive is, apparently, fucked.  So I have a new hard drive.  No biggie.

Now, I have some unbackupped documents and such on my old hard drive that I need recovered.  Anyone know anything about this?

Yours,

benji

Fuck

mnottertail -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:19:42 PM)

how bad did it auger in?  sometimes you can set it up as a secondary drive and move the shit right quick to the good drive.

LaTigresse -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:20:49 PM)

Welllllll motherfuckerrrr!

And yes benji, you know I missed you terribly, was about ready to send the Mounties after you.

Secondly, if it were me I would just take the damned computer to the computer doctor and plead ignorance and ask for help, but thats just me.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:25:27 PM)

That's what I did....  apparently, one of the spinny thingies is wobblying around in the box thingy, and I need to go to a data recovery place which will cost somewhere around an arm and a leg, give or take a hand.

In other words, fuckfuckfuckfuck- but I digress....

Yours,

benji

Edited to add:  Speaking of fucking:  Aileen, your new picture makes me want to.

SirKenin -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:26:38 PM)

Sorry.  Did not notice you were gone or I would have posted it.  Have to back the fellow Canadians you know.

As for the harddrive, it depends what happened to it.  If it can be at least detected in the BIOS there is a chance you can save it yourself.  I can point you to a good program that will take it from there if you do not mind forking over $100.

Bearlee -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:27:22 PM)

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck  might just be all that's left!  Ron's right; depends on how badly it's augered in  (LOL)  I plugged mine in and heard a pop...and smelled that awful 'electrical smell'; and pretty much said the same words you posted here.  And it was all gone.

Sorry if this happens to you; I'd try the ComDoc, too...but it won't be cheap.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:29:26 PM)

Well, the quotes I'm looking at are between $500 to $3000 (if it's really bad)

Now, obviously, I have a new hard drive in, and the old one is sitting on my desk, holding a hammer and taunting me to escalate the issue, so how would I go about accessing it?

Yours,

benji

LaTigresse -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:32:35 PM)

Step away from the hammer!!!!!!!!!!

SirKenin -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:33:00 PM)

Mmm.  One more thought.  If the bearings are gone in the drive it might be tough..  But plug the drive in as a slave and download the demo at http://www.stellarinfo.com/download/download_form.php?sid=5  Running that will tell you up front whether the software can detect any files.  If it works, then go ahead and order it.  It is excellent.  I have it myself.

Bearlee:  That did not mean the end of the world.  You should have searched for a dead one off Ebay or something with a good board on it.  As long as they are identical it would have worked again.  These recovery places use that trick all the time.

LadyEllen -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:33:44 PM)

Benji who?

mnottertail -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:34:19 PM)

edit:
I see I am too late, you are with the right man in SirKenin

check the pinout for master/slave (of, fuckin A this shit is gonna be right up your alley, pard) and set it to slave.  Plug it into the ribbon cable (look for the little notch in the plug) that the other drive is on.  additionally there will be a little three or four pronger like the one on the drive already in your system, and it will be hanging loose as an extra, plug it into the power slot (everything in the plug outs is so unique you will not be able to plug it in wrong unless you are particularily brutish and stupid.  Boot that son-of-a-bitch and go to my computer and see if D: shows.  If it does you are in business.  The thing is, as they warm up (lets say its a bearing) they start failing quicker, so you gotta move on it.

Whip The Hip's been asking after you, I hear

LaTigresse -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:36:19 PM)

Ron, in two threads you have amazed the shit outta me today.

SirKenin -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:36:23 PM)

If it gets worse as it is booting up, throw it in the freezer for a bit before you plug it in.. Thing is, once you have it back out again you have to act fast, so do not dilly dally around.  That trick will work once if it works at all.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:40:02 PM)

Well, this is pretty fan-fucking-tastic!  Thank you all who have helped so far.  Unfortunately, I think I have to go out and buy a cable to hook that fucker up, and I won't be able to do so today, but hey, it's worth a try.....

Again, thank you (Especially SirKenin and Ron) and feel free to keep throwing that lifesaving info out there!

Yours,

benji

LadyEllen -> RE: Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck (10/10/2006 12:44:17 PM)

You are all giving Benji the wrong advice.

Its clear in this case, that the nut behind the keyboard has caused the problem. Its tightness has clearly not been adjusted properly, and this instance is a good illustration of the dangers of having maladjusted nuts connected to a PC. The usual solution is to ensure the nut is screwed as hard as possible, on a regular basis - this prevents maladjustment and thus prevents the nut from screwing the computer.
