It's probably just a simple accident, but bet everyone is jumpy there.   M

NEW YORK (AP) -- Police say an aircraft has crashed into a building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue. It is near Rockefeller Center.
There was no word on casualties.
Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

With all of NYC pretty much restricted airspace, he *should have been* unter ATC control, and if not, INTERCEPTED.

Looks like EVERYTHING we should have learned on 9/11 didn't stick.

Most of New York is unrestricted airspace. Maybe that should change but now it is perfectly legal to fly in that city.

72nd and York is nowhere near Rockefeller Center.

Because of the huge traffic in the Tri-state area, he should never have been cleared to fly there. I doubt he was where he was supposed to be.

As a licensed pilot he can basically fly anywhere in the Country, except in restricted airspace, which this area of New York isn't. Flight plans are recomended for all flights, but not mandatory.

You're telling me the NYC class B airspace, and 30 NM TFR doesn't cover the upper east side?

Wow, there's a thousand foot gap b/t the bottom of the class B, and the ground.

Well, that's going to be fixed tomorrow.

That is a very busy air corridor.. If he was in radio contact and flying at the proper altitude he could be there.Sight seeing planes and helicopters fly up and down the East River hundreds of times a day. I've been in one..
