Well..........since bringing eel to Minnesota is not practical, as it would be gross by the time it arrived, you come on out to California, we'll go to Mikuni's (yes, the bartender at a Sushi place makes one wicked-ass margarita), I'll share smoked eel with you if you buy my margarita. From a few psychiatric resources; Sometimes it's called peer pressure. Sometimes it's called mob mentality. Either way, people have a powerful influence on each other's decision making, right or wrong. It had been demonstrated that normal individuals will capitulate to a group's judgment -- even when the group is wrong. If you have leaders that are committing anti-social acts attacking other people, then some people might be pulled into it without really realizing what they are doing just because they want the approval of their peers. Mob psychology shows that individuals tend to behave in a different manner as part of a group in contrast to acting independently. Members of a group are prone to acting in ways that they would deem immoral or unjust if in control of their behavior. This is not due to change in one's belief or principle, but rather the fact that individuals tend to ignore or avoid one's conscience or rational thought. It can be said that individuals in a group defer their goals and take upon the identity of the group. Therefore, members of a group are likely to commit acts they would never commit alone. Being in a group allows individuals to defer blame, responsibility, accountability, and/or judgment upon the group. quote: Emperor1956 but I will say that those that "get it" (holly, Julia, Katy, MisPandora) are as usual right, and the others...well...breeding does tell. Doing a search on that list of names of folks who "get it" then reading quite a few other posts and going thru the two pages of deleted posts that I had copied to Word to reply to and then did not, by the same group and a few others who are usually involved I discovered one thing they had in common. The point where the words "twue" and or most other "w" speak or baby talk seemed to be when as a group they were posting to the same topic or appeared to have no rational reply. Then I took the time to peruse other posts where they were replying as individuals on threads where the others were not involved and saw very little if any of the "twue", "w" or baby talk at all. Occasionally this type of talk was used for humor but most often it was used to attack those they did not agree with, even if what the poster being attacked for had not said or implied what they were being attacked for but rather because one member of the group assumed something was implied or just did not like the poster. At that point I also noticed all efforts by said poster to rectify the issues only led to more ridicule. Oddly enough(and this is an observation so do not get your panties in a bunch) most often the person these folks flocked to with this behavior was Julia though occasionally it was another both on or not included in Emperor's list. Now the group listed below was Emperor's original list though having also went through HollyS and MizPandora's posts I did not see the same behaviors. There were a few others in the threads noted below engaging in similar speak for the same reasons but I stuck with the original list. I only included some of the posts that contained the word "twue", the ones using the other types of speech mentioned were too numerous to post. This group of posters taken individually often post intelligent well thought out polite posts, but together under the scenarios I described above their behavior alters rapidly. A classic example of mob mentality.

When we call it mob mentality, it's hugely negative. But culturally, collective reasoning is a beneficial property in humankind. We need to adopt commonalities within groups to sustain "the pack" and that instinct is nothing short of wonderous, given the wide range of mental and physical abilities across the human genome. The reason there are always dissenters and rebels is in case the collective makes wrong choices, the dissenters can move forward and sustain the next generation of "the pack". We need those fringe elements, they ALSO ensure survival. Granted, we are not living in the age of tribal nescessity, but those dynamics are still a part of our genetic history, if not part of our human base. So i don't expect we'll be seeing those behaviors go away anytime soon. What's nice about that is.. throughout your life, you will be the recipient of the collectives good graces and will be alternatively defended, scorned, appeased, uplifted to leadership, torn down and rejected. For those in the center of the bell curve, what goes around, comes around. Someone might be on the fringe this week, but will "bell up" again soon. So will we all.
