Anything that plays on the edge of reason be it emotional or physical is edge play. What is "edge play" for one person, may be normal and common place for another. Traditionally people INMO misuse the term and limit it to things on the edge of life or death, such as breath play, knife play, gun play, etc.. but in all honesty, everything has inherant risks that come with it. So I like to simple say.. if it scares the bejeebers out of you, odds are it is edge play, and how safe it is is dependent upon how compatent your dominant is. Ms. Eden

Angel agrees with m'Lady Eden. Edge play is really defined by individuals. For myself... knives, fire and breath would be edge play. Another person may find them quite tame. For some, bloodplay or vampirism is 'edgy'... I find them quite 'normal' for me. Love and Peace

i have heard definitions that agree that those already given, but i have also heard edgeplay used to refer to knife play. (i suppose because of the sharp edge). i think the definitions already given are more accepted. [:D]

For me edge play is anything that can kill you at a slip of the wrist. Where most everything we do can seriously hurt you. People play with rope daily and never get hurt. Make that rope into a noose and hang yourself. The odds go up dramatically you may get seriously hurt. It is one thing for your Dom to grab your neck during a scene. Rough sex..Rough play. Another all together to grab it so rough you pass out. I guess fire play could be considered edge play as Angel pointed out. For us it isn’t. I get to hold the damp cloth. No matter what people say if you’re on fire only you truly know when the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns are happening. Just a few examples.

Edge play means different things to different people. Where is that edge for you? How close do you choose to stand to the edge of the abyss? For many people, certain things are considered "Edgy" such as blades, cuttings, play piercings, asphyxiation, bloodplay, watersports, scat, rape fantasy, fear play, the "B" word (Yes, the word itself is so edgy that it will cause the thread to be censored...), etc. I won't say that something is edgeplay simply because it can kill you quickly. A simple tie can become life threatening very quickly under the right circumstances. ~Thorns

I never considered myself an 'edge' player, even though I'd bottomed to things like singletail, knife play, fireplay, electical play. I just liked the people I played with and the head space those activities put me in. One day I was having a discussion with a few friends over coffee and one of them said "Well, yeah, but you are an edge player," and I was kind of taken aback. I never thought of myself as an edgeplayer, because I knew people who did things I considered much edgier than I was was willing to go. But many percieved me as an edge player because of the activities I engaged in. So, I guess edgeplay is in the mind of the beholder so to speak... Lily

I so agree with this. Some edge play has nothing to do with the physical at all. I think if you loot at the mantra Safe, Sane, and Consensual, and think of the activities that will take you to the very edge of each of those, you get a better idea of what edge play can include. Knife play and blood play takes you to the edge of safety. Some deep humiliation scenes and mind fucks can take you to the edge of sanity. Rape scenes and "no-limits slaves" play with the edge of consent. All of that said, one person's edge is another person's everyday life... Yours, Taggard
