Level -> Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 11:25:12 AM)

Seeing this made think of the question, where do you get your music? Any good stories about shops you've been to?

Music fans mourn loss of Tower Records

By KAREN MATTHEWS, Associated Press WriterFri Oct 13, 3:33 PM ET

The news that Tower Records is going the way of, well, records struck a dissonant note with customers as the news sunk in this week that the 46-year-old music retailer has been sold to a liquidator that will close all the stores.

"I feel very sad about it," Ladd Fraternale, shopping in the country section at Tower's East Village store in Manhattan, said Wednesday. "I think they have a great selection here and the service is good."

Mass market stuff comes from the big box places, Target usually.  If I want something obscure, we'll order it online.

My location and work schedule make seeing new artists in small venues basically impossible these days, but I bought quite a few indie cd's off the table by the door at one time.

LadyJulieAnn -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 12:01:39 PM)

I typically go through Amazon (often buy used cds) and Best Buy.  I like a lot of independent bands, so I sometimes end up going through band websites.  What I have found when I go to larger music stores is that the cds are WAY overpriced.  Who wants to pay $16-18 for a cd when you can get it for $11.99 elsewhere?

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 3:14:38 PM)

Typically either a shop called Von's in the village in West Lafayette, or JL records on the levy.

ohbiguy32 -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 4:17:53 PM)

I have such strange taste in music that I usally have to buy directly from the artist. Sometimes I am able to special order off the net or through a friend who owns a new/used cd store

Rumtiger -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 4:20:07 PM)

I dont own a single CD.

I didn't need to quote anyone here, because I would have posted to this anyway.

I started listening to music later than most people these days.  I really wasn't much 'aware' of popular music until I was about 14 or 15 or so.  My mother enjoyed music quite a bit but because of our widish age gap, her tastes were much older.  A neighbor introduced me to the music of Elton John, and it sort of went on from there.

I did have a lot of LP's, about 1000 or so, prior to that format becoming extinct.  I didn't even have a CD player for a while after that format became popular, until I won a player at a company Christmas raffle.  Then the re-buying began.  I did manage to purchase quite a number used, and many at the $10 price point.

Some of the bands I listened to at the time I never replaced the records.  When I moved a couple of years ago, I didn't have room for everything, so I left the records, although my 'listening list' kept track of everything, so I knew what still had left to replace.  I probably still have 30-40 titles or so that have never made it to CD.  And yes, I still look.  About 3 months or so ago I bought about 6 titles from Tower Online, import titles.

Over the years I did a lot of traveling, and I was in Los Angeles specifically and California in general quite a bit, so I've been to so many of the Tower stores there.  Moving to Atlanta in 1987 meant that I had a Tower close-by.  There was even a second one in the area for a short time.

As the years have gone on, my interests have broadened such that finding what I listen to in a 'brick and mortar' store is really quite difficult.  Best Buy has an abysmal selection of what I listened to, and it rather hurt when MediaPlay shut down, because their selection was 'decent', with prices far below Tower.

I've done a lot of buying online over the years, primarily through CDNow, which is now part of the Amazon group.  Their prices are also a bit under Tower, and with free shipping rather than sales tax, it's far the better bargain.

But it's not visceral.  So I still go to Tower.  And it is Tower, of course, that I am also able to find the fetish magazines Skin Two (British), Marquis (German) and Secret (Belgian).  Every 3 to 4 months I'm there every week, because I know that these quarterly titles HAVE to be coming out any moment, and I must have my fix.

Of course, when I moved a couple of years back, I had to plan for the amount of space that is required for my things.  Before, I had a really large loft with a lot of wall space that I could put my racks of CD's.  That wasn't going to happen, so I determined I would need an extra bedroom just for the music.  That bedroom now houses the CD's, a DVD case, and 2 chairs (and the art, but that's another story).  In the closet, half the toys.

I knew that Tower had filed Chapter 11, but I figured that Virgin Megastores might pick them up.  It never dawned on me that there wouldn't even be a Tower equivalent.

Until Thursday night, after a munch, I drove down to the city to look for my beloved fetish magazines.

Store closing.  Liquidation sale.

All I have to say is that I'm glad that I've decided to cut myself off after the collection grows to 4000 CD's.  I only have 33 more to go.  Even with the sale, I don't think I have the heart to go back.  Now my only option is buying online.

Jeff

Recently bought a few CDs from "CheapCDs" (online).....

Got some fair prices on the older stuff.....Joe Walsh, Humble Pie, Jethro Tull, Who, CSN&Y, Robben Ford, Savoy Brown, Elvin Bishop, J Geils Band, Holly Smith...... $10-$11 for the older stuff

I was real happy with the service......

When I lived in San Jose, I swear I would feel a magnetic pull every time I drove past the Tower Records in Campbell.  I would just have to stop in there, and would typically come out with at least 5 CDs.  Now I will typically buy from Amazon, or as some have said, from the artist directly.  When I go to Santa Cruz, Streetlight Records is a must, however.  Fantastic store of more used CDs than you can imagine, and I always manage to walk out of there with some new musical treats. I like just about every kind of music.  My last trip to Streetlight had me leaving with a Thelonius Monk CD (in honor of my Dad) and Rostropovich.

Aileen68 -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 6:31:29 PM)

Now itunes.
Then a great little store called Music Staff.  Back when you still bought albums.

Level -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 6:32:41 PM)

I get most of mine from Amazon.... but I do wish there were more independent shops still around. There is one near by, but they have a small selection, and I don't like the FYE type of stores.

As a kid, I bought everything from either a Gibsons dept. store, or at Salmar's. Gibsons had a nice atmosphere, the music room was darker than the rest of the store, giving it an almost secretive hideout feel.

I've also bought quite a few albums through BMG music club, not a bad choice, and I buy singles through iTunes and Napster.

Almost forgot, there's a head shop nearby that has tons of LPs, 45s, 8-tracks, and CDs, and lots of memorabilia, as well, called Sunrise Records.

toservez -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 8:31:50 PM)

I have not bought a CD in years. I am all MP3. I even spent hours and hours convering my CD's into digital.

I am one of those guilty of helping to kill of the local record stores.

Hmmmmmmm, sounds like you need a firm spanking, young lady. [8D]

Seriously, I once considered doing the same thing to my CDs, but I like being able to hold them, and look at the artwork (which brings up another thing-- I miss the larger album artwork).

siamsa24 -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 10:16:37 PM)

I guess I will be the one to admit this.  If I must have a CD I request it from the library and then rip and burn it.  I used to buy CDs and had a collection of well over 1000 for a long time.  Then my car was broken into and they were all stolen.  I figure that I already bought them and took care of them (I left them in my car for a total of 20 minutes while I ran into the grocery on my way home from the dance studio) and I don't want to have to buy them again  because some jerk stole them.

Bluebird -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/14/2006 10:19:54 PM)

We still have hundreds of LP's, including a ton of boots - simply CAN'T replace those with CDs.  We also own hundreds of CDs.  (And yes, we have 2 turntables in the house and still listen to the LPs as well as the CDs).  I am a full-blooded geek as far as computer knowledge, but I don't own an MP3 player.  I buy music from all sources, online and local stores, new and used.  I did like our local Tower store because they carried more off-beat music than your average chain, but small indie stores are a great source (although hard to find them here, better in NYC and LA).  I have been known to buy albums and CDs simply because the cover art appealed to me.  I think there is so much talent in the world, I hate to limit myself to just a few genres that I know I like, and there is now evidence that your brain "grows" when exposed to unfamiliar music.  So, I listen to music in languages I don't speak, jazz, rock from all ages, classical, instrumental, accapella, anything that interests me at the moment, I buy it and listen to it.  And I do mean buy.  Support your favorite artists!

Oh for a return to LPs and great cover art. Buying a CD is just not the same as buying vinyl with great cover art. CDs just don't have that smell LPs have when you buy them new and the sound is far too clean. I have still got my first LP which was Turning Point by John Mayall and I still get a thrill when it jumps on one track because that was when a girlfriend called Jenny kicked her leg out and hit my old Dansette record player when we were having fun.

I rarely buy music now but copy my eldest daughter's CDs which is great because I like her taste and it keeps me up with current groups. Not that many CDs are made that I think I MUST HAVE and when they are, they are usually bought for me by my eldest daughter on my birthday of Christmas.

darkinshadows -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/15/2006 2:56:51 AM)

I buy mine from my Local independant Record Store - she will order anything I want if she doesn't have it.
I will occasionally buy from Amazon, but thats very rare.
Otherwise, if I am in town, I will pop into HMV.

Have to say, I am a Myspace Freak and love discovering the new and the independant bands there.  Linking up to their sites or their myspace I can download their music or buy from their sites.  You can also get to hear the orignal layouts for the songs, rather than the way they are released (James Morrison is a case in point).  Personally if I buy a song, I will purchase every version - including those with limited artworks. I do like vinyl, but I am a CD lover for my sins.  I LOVE boots and mashups too - I think they bring a new element to songs... (then again I have a certain bias there[:D]).
I do download - but I do not think it is to the detriment of the record industry... The Killers are another case in point for this.  But it is having a knock on effect for the music stores... but then, that is alot to do with greed on their part.  I am really sad to see the end of Tower, it was the only place I shopped for Vinyls back in the day.
But as long as the music doesn't stop... I will be dancing.[;)]

Peace and Rapture

Manawyddan -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/21/2006 6:51:35 AM)

I much prefer to purchase music from a local, independent record store, but there simply isn't one that's remotely convenient to me (though to be fair I haven't gone through the yellow pages and driven around town, but based on my experience so far). There are a few independent stores but they tend to carry nothing but dusty old discs with show tunes.

Consequently, rather than drive two towns over, I end up ordering from Amazon. I appreciate the discount, but would support my local if I could.

Arpig -> RE: Where do you get your music? (10/21/2006 7:03:41 AM)

Mostly I download it from file sharing sites, etc.

And before you all start ragging on me about piracy, etc. its legal in Canada to do so. We pay royalties on blank CDs & cassettes here, and that money is distributed to artists based on some arcane formula worked out between the Gvt. and the royalty organization (CAPAC & some other one if I recall correctly), so even if I am burning my own pictures and files, musicians get a cut.
