I think a very dark color would look great on you...obviously I am partial to black, but definitely with some funky highlights like a red or purple and totally with the messy, piecey style. Not so militarily short...lol.

I'll echo the red hair idea but if you do decide to go the way of the red (this applies to any color, really), make sure it's the right shade.  I' saw someone mention the color auburn.  I have auburn hair and according to strangers running up to me, shouting, "I love your hair color!  Where did you get it??" and the disappointment in their face when I tell them it's natural, the color auburn is hard to find.  I think a light to medium brown might be complimenting to your skin tone and eye color.  Having too dark of a brown or a black could make you look like Brad Pitt when he was trying to look more like Angelina Jolie.  It just was NOT working.

I know you're not hot on too much length, but perhaps the person above me, Aeon, was correct.  Maybe just growing it out a little might help.  Sure it's not an extreme change right away but it might be a considerable option.  I've had the same feeling before so I understand, but obviously think things through before you decide and change.

Good luck.
