Yep, be sure to find a friend who will take care of him/her when you die, b/c it will likely outlive you!

uhhhmmm... there should be plenty of amazon parrot newsgroups on yahoo. i'd find one! And contact some bird experts!

This is right up my alley.  I've had parrots for the past 20 years. Write me with any questions you may have.

Just make sure he has a cage big enough and toys!  They need mental stimulation to be content or you are going to have a screaming mess.

I acquired a double yellow head Amazon from a friend of mine.  She had him in a small cage for 3 years and felthe was just good for breeding.  She wanted to find a home so I bought him from her.  I set him up with a cage 3 times bigger than he had plus a playpen that stands along side of his cage.  I leave him out all day long and he tools around the set up.  He is talking up a storm (mainly to the Rommba as it  approaches his cage on cleaning the floor)

In the mid 80's, I had the privilege of attending a seminar by Steve Martin (parrot trainer-not comedian) on the psychology and training of parrots.

I've cared for everthing from finches to Macaws.

My parents have a Green Cheeked Conure. He's only a few months old (they got him at 8 weeks)...and he's still a bit rusty on preening himself.
It's more like dunks, shakes, and is done...then uses his beak a little to get the excess off.
It's adorable.

I'm curious as to how long it'd take for him to start speaking?

I've had several Amazons and the first was a Blue Front. I love Amazons, they have a lot of character. Most take to one sex and not the other. That is probably why he didn't like her.

Right now I have a Mexican Redhead. He's so pretty but not much of a talker but that's ok. Like I said, I love their personalities. I have a couple Quakers that do the talking around here to make up for his lack of speech.

He is 28 years old and I got him from a couple who got tired of his loud vocals. They got him from a rescue group and goodness knows where he was before that. He's old enough that he was probably caught wild and shipped in. Back then there wasn't much Amazon breeding going on in captivity. He bit a lot when I got him but that was because his last owners didn't know not to stick their fingers in the cagebars and make him think munching on fingers was a game. I got him to stop that now, and he's not screaming as much as he used to. I have a "time out" perch in the back room for when he's really loud.

They are happiest when they are out of the cage and with people. Mine constantly wants to be on me but doesn't like it when I type because it shakes him so he nips me softly as if to tell me to sit still.

I've been breeding, selling and training birds for about 25 years so please ask me anything and I just might be able to help.
