Just wondered who else had seen this Canadian comedy, and what you thought of it? (it sprang to mind after the "Canadian troops battle ten foot marijuana plants thread")

Its on about the tenth re-run on the Comedy Channel in the UK - around 2300hrs weeknight. Well worth a watch - its filmed like a documentary (bit like The Office) but hilarious (like The Office), as the Boys try their best to make it through life and make some money by less , whilst all the time dodging the officious trailer park supervisor.

Also, which is your favourite character?

Julian - the rum drinking hunk with at least half a brain?
Ricky - the hash smoking dick with less than half a brain?
Bubbles - the myopic cat lover?
Mr Leahy? Randy? anyone else?

....having been in Canada less than 3 weeks, i can only say that Bubbles rules........in fact, i'd argue that any comedy character that can quote Plato's noble lie and then go on to grabbing a few more shopping carts in order to buy a cat a prosthetic paw ought to be the obvious choice for the UN secretary general.

Philosophy - so thats why you've been so quiet! Hope its going well for you. You deserve it to.

Prosthetic paw? Come on - spill! There must be another series I havent seen yet?

ahhhh, the story of Bubbles and the kitty with a need for a prosthetic paw is on the extras of the DVD.........hidden quite well too......it predates the series and was a character sketch for the series :)

OH? I shall have to tease Adrian with that then - he got me into the show in the first place, and well, I like to tease him LOL!

trailer park boys sounds like it would be good.

It is, but you have to seriously reduce your mentallity to the lowest common denominator to really enjoy it...  Like, lower your IQ by several dozen points would be nice.  It can be funny, but it really only appeals to the most basic mental level you can achieve.  It really is that retarded (and you could say that that is where it holds it's appeal).  Like going up and down the aisles of church on Christmas Eve selling baggies of pot.  That kind of retarded.  lol.  They have released the movie, by the way.  It is in theaters up here right now.  I thought it might be humorous to get rather high and go and watch it, if for no other reason than to fry a few brain cells.  Your IQ drops a few points just watching the trailer.  [8D]

Oh SirK - lighten up!

Though I agree you have to get into the mentality of it. The first time Adrian made me watch it, I was horrified!

haha.  Nothing to be horrified about, that is for sure... It is just a stupid humor.  It appeals to the lowest common denominator of society's sense of humor.  Funny thing is, there are actually people as on that show out there...  What a scary thought.  [8D]

LadyEllen -> RE: Trailer Park Boys (10/17/2006 1:12:04 AM)

Michael, I am sure that there are trailer parks, and trailer parks!

LadyEllen -> RE: Trailer Park Boys (10/17/2006 1:14:27 AM)

SirK - I know! What horrified me was the idea of trying to get a laugh out of hopeless people living a pretty desperate life. One could make the same sort of programme on a British social housing estate, very easily.

"you have to seriously reduce your mentallity to the lowest common denominator to really enjoy it"

...i have to disagree......slapstick has a long and honourable history in comedy, as does observational, character based comedy. Bubbles' ability to find an apposite quote or concept from the ancient philosophers is not about appealing to lowest common denominators. The shoot style is astonishingly sophisticated, you take a video camera out and try to make something that looks so unartful.....it's hard. Naturalism is one of the most difficult effects to create in any medium....just ask Strinberg or Ibsen.
There is much to admire in TPB, if you allow yourself to look past the surface.
