They could take the party affiliation off as far as I am concerned, I don't pay any attention to it. I always vote for the individual and if I'm not up on the candidates enough to decide, I don't vote for anyone on the ballot for that office (when possible, sometimes that's not an option).

Up to now I'd always vote the candidate, choose the one who most closely mirrored my own views. Then a sea change occurred within the Republican party, they became one giant mass, "the Borg collective " if you like. A moderate republican became an outcast, attacked by the right as a "traitor", even worse then the liberals or democrats. Lincoln Chafee [R-RI] was attacked worse by the conservatives in his primary then he has been by his democratic opponet. I'm voting straight democratic party in Novemeber, just for the sake of diversity.

I've voted for republicans, democrats, and a few independents. I've always seen to many idiots just vote for a person because of there party status instead of there actions, statements, and character. It's so bad, that I've seen some politcians join a certain party to help boost there votes.

For 2004, there was the mindframe to pick the most likly to beat Bush rather than voteing for who you really wanted in office.

I just finished my early voting.  I admit..I voted ABR (Anybody But Republican) If it was Democrat and female.. I voted for her.  Then male and Democrat.  I'm not quite sure about the Libertairian party yet.  Anything to neuter the bushman.

More welfare overhaul? The last time welfare was overhauled, many full time college students were cut off. College students should be priority, not ineligible. Many who obtain college degrees have the income to see to their offsprings education. The end result, the number of people on welfare would dwindle. The last thing this country needs is more welfare reform. As for canidates, I would vote for anyone who wanted to stop companies from replacing hardworking Americans with immigrants and who wanted to do something about our healthcare crisis (bonus points for Hillary Clinton). England provides free healthcare for their citizens, why can't we?

Hello A/all,

The Medical establishment and Big Pharma dislike the idea of universal healthcare because it would negatively impact their profit margin.

If everybody was entitled to health care (as in England, Canada, etc) by the government then the Medical / Pharma people have to negotiate prices for things like medicines and procedures with the government.  The government is in a position where they could simply tell the pharma companies to lower their prices. 

It is much more profitable for them to divide and conquer the healthcare provider companies.  Additionally, HMO and PPO organizations would be cut off at the knees unless they negotiated with Big Government, who would simply go off and find somebody else to provide what they needed to give to US citizens.

The ones in opposition to universal healthcare in this country are generally not the citizens themselves, with the exception being those who dont want to increase taxes to pay for giving everybody health care.

I have tried to point out to them that they pay for it anyway when the person goes to County as an uninsured patient, but the response usually seems rather obtuse, so I stopped.

On the subject of who I vote for, generally I vote against people who have a history at not meaning what they say and not saying what they mean.  I usually vote against long-term incumbents from any party.   I voted Green against Monkeyboy the first time around because I disliked Al Gore.  But last election I voted on the ABB ticket. 

I am trying to figure out the poster who stated that Bush did great things for Texas.  From what I have read he was a fiscal and ecological disaster to the state of Texas, in a way similar to the fiscal and ecological disaster he has been for the entire country.

I am also trying to figure out the comment about what Al Gore did.  He was vice-president.  His only job was to live longer than the President in case the President keeled over and died.  A job he did a bang up job at.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

     I really dont see the point of voting for a lot of candidates just because one likes the way they come across on tv or on the radio or even with their voting record if theyve held office before.  Especially when they say things on tv and on commercials for the sole purpose of looking good to voters.  Even if they do mean what they say in their campaign commercial, sound bytes, and pseudo debates, they're still probably one of two parties and if they should happen to disagree about certain things with enough people of their own party, they'll simply be a likable person in office who doesn't have much power.  Doesn't seem to leave much room for individuality of the public serant.  Because of this no matter how much you like the person running for office, you're still voting for the party the person is running under.  Unless they become disgruntled with their party and have to appeal to the opisite party, then youd be voting for the other party.  Third party candidates would be a possible exception to this in the case of smaller, more local elections.  But on a national level, I think the vast majority of republicans and democrats would have to be voted out of office and replaced with people from a wide variety of different parties.  Then, the particular person's own ideas would possibly have more of a chance of meaning something in the political world.          
    So, as it is, i guess all we can really do is vote for the lesser of the two evils.  I think i recall hearing somthing about the italian language where ever since after world war two and after musolini's (sp?) facist government lost control, the italian word for facist has been the same as the italian word for corporation.  Dont know how true that is, but it is just something interesting ive heard.

Yeah that is the one guy I cannot believe I would not vote for but as CrazyC pointed out so nicely that my confusion comes into the whole power structure and who has control of the agenda and hiring.

Personally though I cannot believe, unless pure desparation happens, that the base will let him win the nomination. If it had been a fair fight in 2000, he would have kicked Bush's ass!



For this reason I may vote a straight dem ticket - maybe throw one pub in there just to confuse them - but at the moment, the pub machine isn't letting any moderate conservatives through, tools only need apply.

Dems, I think, don't keep such tight control over candidate ideology, at least at the present moment.

We had a good pub governor, Gary Caruthers, but he expressed an opinion contrary to the party line, and they lynched him for it. They'd get rid of McCain too, if they could.

The reason why I ask this on a personal level because I was thinking about the Presidential election in 2008 and currently I want to vote for a certain party’s candidate no matter who but there are probably going to be two people running from the other party who I like and admire and if one were to actually get the nomination it would really confuse my thought process.


Absolutely 100%.

The candidate is merely a personality who heads the party. He is not the party and nor is he the emodiment of party policy. He is merely a figurehead and in the age of celebrity he is quite often chosen because he is smooth (not sure what happened with Bush but maybe his preaching qualities were considered handy). If you vote based on the candidate then it would simply be a case of paying a very smooth individual a shit-load of money to charm the arse off the electorate - the party could have no real substance to support the style.

Party policy is what you need to consider when voting. By extension, the core principles that underpin party policy are the real defining factor when you cast your vote. What matters is the policies implemented in the 4 year period not the talking-head who is designed to simply win an election.

I think you need to look at the candidates history as well as what they have accomplished.  I personally don't think Clinton was a wonderful governor and I could not understand why everyone thought he'd make a great President.  I would like to see candidates from states that handle a lot of problems.  IMHO

When I was younger, I used to vote maybe 50% Libertarian., 40% Republican, and 10% Democrat.

Since then, I have lost faith in the intellectual credibility of the people running the Libertarian party, and after the current administration can no longer take the Republican party even remotely seriously. McCain's current antics (palling with Falwell, saying he'd commit suicide if the Democrats won) have disenchanted me from him, as well.

If you told me when I was younger that I'd be voting a straight Democratic ticket, even as a strategic move, I'd have thought you were crazy, but that's usually what I do nowadays (some local offices I vote for the Libertarian still, though).
