philosophy -> the quality of mercy (10/17/2006 10:15:27 AM)

"The quality of mercy is not strain'd
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown
........
Though justice be thy plea, consider this-
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation; we do pray for mercy
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy."

William Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice, IV i

....wasn't there an important American document tht began with something like, "we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal...."?

So here is a US government that enshrines in a law the idea American citizens are more equal than others, at least in a human rights sense. Has it come to the point where it is so expected that the US government will behave like this that it isn't even worthy of comment? Or was the shakespeare reference a bit too tricky for people?

If a person is not able to forgive themselves and show themselves mercy, they won't have a clue as to how to render the same to others.

i find that our governement takes care of only a select portion of its people.  The ones they deem beneficial for their own pocket.   Have you taken a look at the condition of folks lives who live out in the midwest?  There are more folks suffering in our country, besides those in the inner cities.  So the human rights issue in this aspect is only in place for lipservice as i see it.  It looks good on the election billboards.
