roughleather -> Kinky site life cycle (10/18/2006 12:43:17 PM)

Check out the Alexa traffic ratings for some kinky sites: http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?w=379&h=216&r=max&z=&y=r&u=collarme.com/&u=
CollarMe peaked in early 2006 and is down to about 2/3 of peak.

Bondage.com peaked in mid-2003, and really fell off after that.

alt.com peaked in late 2004-early 2005, and fell off to about a third of peak.

This is the typical pattern for "social networking" sites.  Check out EZboard (peaked mid 2003), Nerve (peaked early 2002), Tribe (peaked early 2006). Myspace has flattened and looks like it's about to peak. This works just like nightclubs; they become hot, they grow, they get too popular, they get overrun, they decline, they hang on, but nobody cares.

Anybody know of any kinky dating sites currently on the upside of the cycle?

Fall is almost always slow time for forum sites.  I don't think collarme has peaked yet.

Having been a member of an online group and in a personal relationship with it's founder, we have seen that participation goes through cycles. For the group, Spring is the lowest level, followed by Summer. In the Fall, things start to pick up and in the Winter, especially the holidays, things are in full swing. We attributed this to 1) the ability and desire to go outside, 2) when children are not in school and thus require more attention, 3) New Year's resolutions that this year, I will follow my fantasy and 4) holiday blues.

I don't, but I think the time to start looking for one would be when you see a chart for collarme on the downswing because that would mean the people are going elsewhere. I think this lifecycle you observe is due to competition or other factors (i.e. fees, etc.) driving traffic from one site to another and not just a mystical boom to bust curve.

I do think it deals with seasons, I know ezboard took a huge dump after the hacking incident awhile ago and I doubt it will ever pick up again, and the one site I belong to slows down to next to nothing in January but right now it's booming.
