I don't know if this has been discussed before and if it has, my bad, but anyone ever read Terry Goodkind's books? They have a strong BDSM theme running through them while couching the plots in a fantasy setting. I completely enjoy reading them and thought maybe I could scare up a discussion about them here.

As an afterthought, doesn't he just look like a Dom.

I liked the first four. Then I got bored. I found that I grew up past him, and re-reading I kinda thought his style wasn't that...mature.

I dunno. I loved the chracters and ideas when I first read the books. Coming back to them, well....they feel not very well written, I guess.

This may not be true of the later books, as I only read up through the fifth one.

(I -did- like the Mord-Sith though) :)

Well hello and welcome to collarme! I hope You enjoy meeting new people and sharing ideas and thoughts. This is a wonderful place for both!

I was sipping My morning coffee and saw the name "Goodkind" and thought Hey what is this about, can it be someone else is a fan? I have been enjoying Mr. Goodkind's books for a few years now. I think He is fantastic! I have even gone so far as to have those who are Mine read them now and then... to date they all have enjoyed reading them.

I haven't read them all yet I am just starting Soul of Fire. I will agree that there have been a few slow parts, but I still find alot of pleasure in His pages. I was given a gift last weekend.. His newest book Chianfire. I am looking forward to getting to read it, but I am one of those who has to do it in the proper order. -=winks=-

I will admit that while reading a certain scene with Richard and Denna this nasty old Domme cried. I have never shed a tear while reading before and it was quite a shock!! But what a scene.

I would enjoy discussing His books with You anytime! LOL And what about Zedd! What a delightful old Man!
I don't know if you know this or not, but there is a real recipe for "Spice Soup" I have made it and it is very good.

I did (and to some extent still do) find Richard immature, but then I remember he is only a youngin' in the books. I doubt he is much older than 24 and still growing up after living a somewhat sheltered life. I find joy in seeing him mature into his position. He is growing like we all do. I love the Mord Sith. Cara is an excellent character. I would love to see a book or two about the training of a Mord Sith and the adventures (for lack of a better word) they might have had before Richard freed them.

I just picked up Chainfire yesterday and am already a couple of hundred pages into it. I'm loving it so far. I won't spoil it for you though so no worries.

What intrigues you the most about the series?

I can't say anyone thing in particular intrigues me because it all does. Many writers make up a world of their own... filled with all manor of being and creature. Goodkind does this as well,but he also makes it almost possible to believe that this is a world very much like our own world. the characters face the same kinds of issues we do if you look closely. Richard is a young man growing up discovering who he truly is... can we all not say that we were all there once?

Of course I love the Mord Sith, I see many things in them that make Me smile. Goodkind takes a Character that should be hated by the reader, and makes them so human. You can fall in love with them without even knowing it is happening. He takes something as simple as a firefly and transforms it into a being, with emotions and feelings. He writes about so many things that happen to everyone of us in our lifes, just adding a little twist here and there.

Zedd and Nathan... now what incredible characters they are, and still they are very human...Nathan... A wizard taken at a very young age kept captive almost all his life... given a chance to be free and what does he do... he buys a sword and has mock sword fights just like a little boy. Zedd... an old man with a huge appetite, not only for food, but for sex... -=chuckles and remembers him talking to Adie the bone woman about getting naked=-

I liked Goodkind's first four or so books, but I found the one(s?) after them to be quite a bore. It's always the exact same plot with different enemies and characters. And what's worse is he seems to have lost the ability to work the characters I grew to love in the first four books into major plots of the successive ones.

If you want a book with BDSM running straight through it that HAD to be written by someone kinky, read the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. The main character's a submissive masochist. It's just three books, and unlike Goodkind's series, wraps up nicely. It takes place in a fantasy version of Europe, with an interesting and enjoyable take on the "fantasy" portion. That's all I'll say.

I adored Kushiel.

I had to shift my expectations after the first book, though, becuse the focus shifted to much -more- political in the 2nd than the first. However, this wasn't a bad thing. Political fantasy is yummy.

I love this discussion. What amuses me is that my teenage SON turned me on to the Goodkind series. In fact, for weeks and weeks he pestered me to read the first one. Of course, when I started reading it, I couldn't stop. Very engaging. And I agree about the strong BDSM themes running through, especially that first book. Intense. It was just weird to read about such blatant sadomasochistic activity and wonder how my son took it in. Oh well, sometimes the nut doesn't fall very far from the tree...

Ok, I finally figured out what it was that was bothering me about the initial question.

I've never really connected Goodkind's Sword of Truth series with BDSM. Certainly, there are sadistic events in the books, as well as long tracts of slavery and bondage, but in every instance, all of the "BDSM"-ish things are portrayed as negative. Now, I enjoy a good non-consent story as much as the next guy, but I read those because I'm LOOKING for a good non-consent story. I've not once seen anything in the Sword of Truth series that puts anything sadistic or slave-ish in a half-decent light.

I can see what you are saying Moleculor to some degree, it does seem totally non-consentual, but what can and does evolve from some of the story lines is very human.

I will have to try to get into the Kushiel series again and see what it is like. I have had it sitting on the shelf as I just couldn't get into it when it first came out. I have heard good things about it, so I guess it is time to give that one another go...

But I will always recommend and deeply enjoy The sword of truth series... As with most things in this life there is always turmoil and chaos. There seems to always be someone one the receiving end of injustice in this world, as there is in Goodkind's books.. but where it differs for Me at least, is Goodkind finds a way to bring his own form of beauty out of the uglyness. He transforms some of the characters into more than they seem at first... which in so many ways is what a successful Dominant does with those She/He owns. We bring out their best.

LOL now everyone knows what happens when you give Fire Walker coffee!!
