anthrosub -> Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/21/2006 3:41:57 PM)

I'm trying out Firefox as my web browser for the first time.  I noticed the Collarme homepage doesn't look quite the same as when using Internet Explorer.  Does anyone here use Firefox or know what I need to do to adjust the program.  It looks like I may need a plug-in or something.

Here's something else...when typing a message here on the boards, the blinking cursor disappears at the 45th space on each line.  Not sure where the fix for that would come from.

Thanks

anthrosub

There is a simple way to avoid noticing how websites look different on Firefox and IE -- just stop using IE. Then you only know how it looks on Firefox. That strategy worked like a charm for me.

I also have cursor problems posting with Firefox. After a while I just got used to it. In every other way I think Firefox is pleasant to use and it makes IE seem like a rotten piece of garbage, so I really don't mind the little inconveniences.

Yeah the vanishing cursor happens everywhere for me and it is a pain. I am not aware of anything that can be done about it. A mouse click will make it reappear.

Also FireFox may not let you paste to the Send Message windows without adding collarme to the list of permitted sites. This is a security feature, apparently, although CollarMe is the only site where this feature has made itself known. First time you try to paste an info box from FF should appear and if you follow the tedious but effective instructions the function should work fine.

Eww;, I used firefox for about a month and finally went back to IE. I had more problems with FF than I ever did with IE.

KatyLied -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/21/2006 4:07:55 PM)

That cut/paste problem drives me nuts.  I just opt out of firefox and go to ie for that stuff.  The same thing with updating my profile, I revert to ie for that.

anthrosub -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/21/2006 8:01:19 PM)

Thanks for the feedback...today has been interesting.  I started out trying Internet Explorer 7, which looks almost exactly like Firefox now (big surprise).  But the problem with IE7 is the command bar and toolbar cannot be moved.  Plus, you need to click through your favorites list to drill down to a specific website you want to visit (no more moving the mouse over a folder and having it slide open).

So, I thought I'd give Firefox a try since it is able to be customized and the favorites (bookmarks) list works like I'm used to.  But I ran into the font and cursor problem immediately.  Such little things that need such effort to fix ruined my experience with Firefox.  I don't like IE7 either, so until either gets fixed the way I want, I'm sticking with IE6.

Thanks again,
anthrosub

that's all that matters. firefox is better than internet explorer. i don't get the curoser until i type and i also have the other problem but just as happy as said you get used to it! it's a small price to pay for a lovely internet browser.

that and i've never been on collarme on internet explorer before so i truly know no difference.

MissyRane -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/22/2006 6:05:40 AM)

Strange..I've no problem using IE (and IE 7) and FireFox the only problem with FireFox was when it came to editing my profile. Other than that, both browers work just fine[:)]

MizSuz -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/22/2006 6:39:49 AM)

When I went to firefox I noticed the different font on the front page of cm and the disappearing cursor that returns as soon as you type.  I haven't tried to modify my profile with it.

What I do like about it is the loss of a phenomenon I was having with IE.  Before if I clicked on a thread in a forum and read a few of the threads, if I tried to backspace out of the thread all together it would only go so far back as the first post I read on the thread.  It wouldn't let me back space all the way out to the main forum.

Firefox doesn't do that to me.

Why not simply use the ctrl+V default for paste?  Always works for me here.

I was about to go into a grumbling rant about young whippersnappers and their dependence on new fangled stuff like mice.  Then I realized you were a decade and some change older than I.  :-)

nefertari -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (10/22/2006 9:12:28 PM)

Firefox is so much more secure than IE that it's worth getting used to.  I don't have any problems at all other than the vanishing cursor and that's not a big deal.  And so far I've only noticed that problem on this site.

Have you tried it, Razor? It's not a matter of how you paste but that FF has a security feature that prevents it in certain cases, the CM message window for instance. It requires editing the prefs.js file which is found in the applications data folder in your Documents and settings folder. Complete instructions for finding it are here.

Or simply search for prefs.js

1. Turn off Firefox to make the changes or it may overwrite your edits when it exits.
(NOTE: you may want to back up the prefs file before you edit it, just in case you want the original back.)

2. Once you have found the prefs.js file, open it in note-pad then add this entire line, as is, complete with the ;

user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.collarme.com");

I don't believe it matters where it goes in the list but I have only done this once. Mine appears thusly -

user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.collarme.com");
user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");

3. SAVE the file.

4. Restart Firefox and the paste function should now work.

5. If any other sites give you the same trouble, add a similar line for them.

6. Blame me if it doesn't work and if that will make you feel better.

Z.

Actually,  I use it quite often.  Haven't had a problem yet.

Well I don't know why that is for you but at least it will spare you the tedium of editing the .js file. For those with that feature blocked it is not simply a matter of using hotkeys.

I updated to IE 7 recently and now sometimes I can’t even access the CM site and sometimes when it works I get random numbers and letters dotted about the screen where buttons or images should be. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or what it’s caused by. My specific version is 7.0.5730.11. I also updated my copy of FireFox to the latest version and that now does the same so it’s crappyness all around. All other sites work ok and the previous version of FireFox works ok also.

Must be just me.

SirKenin -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (11/12/2006 12:59:39 PM)

Get used to it.  Firefox has issues with all kinds of websites.

toservez -> RE: Using Firefox and the Collarme Website (11/12/2006 2:04:16 PM)

I always had and hated the paste part with firefox but I always had tried it with the mouse. Since a suggestion from another thread of ctrll+v that has always worked for me without doing anything else.

I love firefox, mostly for the tab function which now IE has, but also for how it handles cookies. The big problem is the quick reply buttons do not show on firefox which would have been nice when I was looking.
