A collar, certainly. Most are looking to have or give one.

Service, of some sort, certainly. Something that is willingly given in order to please BOTH partners, hopefully.

The finding of "The One" for many (not me).

The formation of "A household" for many (me!).

I have studied Shintoism at times in my life, and the problem I have with the
question the OP asks seems to be the need to find a "Kami" in a subject like BDSM.  From my understanding of the Shinto belief in "Kami," it relates more to a spirit or entity which inhabits a place or thing.  The Kami is inhabiting the place for it's own purposes, and to a believer in Shintoism, this Kami is respected and revered.  If somebody has determined a Kami lives in a specific tree, they will tie a white rope around it to let other people know that this tree has a Kami in it.

When I was a kid I was wandering through a darker part of the woods next to small trickling creek one day and came upon a 4 inch high waterfall running off of moss covered rocks into a small pool.  I have seen thousands upon thousands of waterfalls, but something about that one still haunts me to this day.  I remember every outline, every rock, every flower, as if it was burned into my brain.

To a believer in Shintoism, they might take this sort of effect upon the viewer as indicating that this waterfall was home to a Kami.

Although I do get a sensation similar to the one I felt about that waterfall when I go into the dungeon at the Lair De Sade in Los Angeles.  Although when I am there I am more interested in tying my submissive up with white ropes to the floor joists overhead.  I am not sure I am doing this to honor the Kami of the Dungeon, though.

I would imagine that the OP meant, correct me if I am wrong, to ask "What is the spirit or essence of BDSM?"

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Thank you Master Fire and Sinergy for your posts.

You are right Sinergy, and yes I'm wondering what is the Kami of BDSM for different people... if they felt one.

Hello A/all,

I guess I am worried about micturating on the religions of other people.

A way to describe "What is the Kami of BDSM" would be akin to saying "What is the car of bananas"

They are two different things, and different in such a way that while their paths may interesect, they dont really relate to each other as a subject.

Kami are a specific thing.  To a follower of Shinto, a Kami is a spiritual entity that has taken up residence in a place or object for it's own purposes.

Having said that, I would imagine a better way to phrase this question would be "What is the spiritual nature of your experience in BDSM."  This frames the question in such a way that Shinto followers are not outraged.

I am a fan of weapons.  I have always loved them.  I can pick up knife A and go "oooo" and pick up knife B and put it back down as meaningless.  My favorite weapon, which I feel almost a sensual thrill to pick up and hold is a rattan Jung Bong (stick about the size of a police baton) I trained with in my former martial art.  It almost feels like a living thing.  I had one made of split bamboo and suede, which I have perverted to a weapon of pleasure and joy.  It does not have as much of the feeling I get from the rattan one, but I do feel an almost electric thrill when I pick it up.

There was a book I used to own "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive For the Complete Idiot" which had a chapter on picking out your VW.  He stated that one of the important things to do while looking for one was to sit in it and try to understand it's existence.

I tend to apply that advice to almost everything in life.

But that is just me, and I could be wrong.
