cloudboy -> LOST (10/23/2006 10:17:39 AM)

I have a Love - Hate relationship with the show LOST.

LOVE: I like the setting, the characters, the dialogue, imagination, and escapism of the show.

HATE: I dislike the faux suspense, filler flashbacks, and Gilligan's Island / hide-the-ball predictability of the show. I think the potential excellence of the show is undermined by the Network's need to pump ratings and churn out episodes. Unlike a novel or HBO series, the story cannot be told to any satifying conclusion because it would end the show and kill the cash cow. In the end, the audience is really just being toyed with.

------

This SEASON

What intrigues me about this season is the set up of the clash between "the others" and the Islanders.

For all-intents-and-purposes, the Islanders are THE AMERICANS: individualistic, anti-authoritarian, competitive, decentralized, multi-ethnic, and multi talented.

The others are communal, authoritarian, centralized, and anti-individual.

Basically, the others are the USSR (torture, guns, foul play, espionage, self serving, and enslaving) while the Islanders are the USA (colonists seeking to balance and harmonize strong individuals with the need for group cooperation and self defense.)

In the end, the Islanders victory and revenge over the others (the probable outcome) will be a victory replayed of the USA over the USSR, of liberty over tyranny, of individual rights over communal ones.

Locke is set up to be the Roosevelt figure (farmer / New Deal) who turns warrior leader (WWII / Fight with the Others.)

The question is, how will the inevitiable fight between these two groups change them?

I too am an addict of Lost and I can't help but wonder if the writers and producers already know what the Hell is going on with that fucked-up island, or are they just making it up as the go along?  Probably a mixture of both.  Things will get wrapped up when the ratings begin to go down and/or when the stars threaten to leave if not given a bigger slice of the cash pie the show is generating.  My big fear is that in the end it will all be revealed to be somebody's dream.  Hopefully the producers will learn from audience reactions to such "it was just a dream" nonsense in such shows as Dallas, Saint Elsewhere, and Roseanne.

The show just sucks. Odds are this is a form of limbo in which souls are trying to cross over much like the movie Jacobs Ladder.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: LOST (10/23/2006 8:01:34 PM)

I stopped watching way back in the beginning when I thought the storyline was leaning toward there being dinosaurs.

Mikal -> RE: LOST (10/23/2006 8:13:43 PM)

It reminds me too much of "reality" shows... not my thing. My family is reality enough. [:D]

I think its about as good as it gets for network TV. It looks marvelous in HD too. You have to want/like pure escapism to get into it, otherwise you have to be part nutjob and take it all very seriously.

Rumtiger -> RE: LOST (10/23/2006 11:37:21 PM)

I stopped watching after like 10 episodes cause me and my ex broke up and it was something we always used to watch together, ever since then I coudlent watch it.

I'll sometimes watch this show when I'm using an elliptical bike at the gym. I've only seen a few episodes though....and have to admit I don't know what to make of the ''Others''

My favorite two characters are Mr. Echo and Locke - But I'm not sure if Mr. Echo is still around  lol!

Not sure how you can sometimes watch the show, and on an elliptical !!

I am generally glued to the TV, TIVO remote in hand so that I can replay the scene where I missed what the grafitti said on the wall behind the main character, or hear the certain intonation of a line that might give something away.

This is not to say that I take it seriously, except that it is serious fun.

BTW cloudboy, the crash survivors will win over the Others, since they are prettier.

They sure as hell better!  I have developed a serious dislike of the Others.  Someday I want to see the arrogant smirks wiped off their faces.  Since you closely examine every episode, maybe you can answer a question that I have been wondering about.  At the end of the last season, when Jack, Kate and Sawyer were being held on the dock, it looked to me like Kate and Jack gave each other a "we have an ace up our sleeve look."  Agree? Disagree?

It's not that tough.....I just plug in a set of ear buds and it works well. Lot women read their books....which is a hellva lot tougher. Anyways.....care to tell me if Mr. Echo has returned yet?

LOST requires one to embrace loose ends and a fair amount of material that doesn't make sense, but the acting, writing, and scenarios compensate for that.

For me the best show of 2006 was BIG LOVE.

The best show of 2005 was ROME.

The best current ongoing series is THE WIRE.

The best new comedy in a couple years is 30 ROCK. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin really get it right!.

For sheer escapism, though, Lost is the best thing on TV since the earlyish X-Files days.

Argentopal -> RE: LOST (10/26/2006 8:13:20 AM)

Hello.
My name is Opal and I am a Lost-Addict.

"Hi Opal"

anyway .... yes, it is set to record even as I watch because I too go back and look at things to try and catch the little things.  My problem was the polar bear and I will be damned if there wasn't another one!  Of course now that we have seen the zoo cages and the Others have talked aout "the bears" there is an explaination for them.  What about the grey-black smoke thing?

Ranger -Mr. Echo was missing and presuemed dead.  Locke realized the new polar bear had him, but that he was not yet dead.  Locke tracked the polar bear as it dragged Echo back to its lair where Locke (where the hell did he just happen to get a can of hair spray???) made a flame thrower out of a can of hairspray.  Now the polar bear has a black (scorched) head and Locke and the rock and roll kid (sorry forgot his name) are taking Mr. Echo back to the camp.

I thought "the look" between Kate and Jack was more of an  " I love you be strong for me it will be OK I promise we will get out of this one too even if the writers don;t know how yet" look.  I am tired of the Kate-Jack / Kate/Sawyer melodrama!  Sleep with them both for gosh sake!  tell 'em to get over it, introduce another cute and younger woman who was previously overlooked. Sawyer uses her to make Kate jealous only he really does fal in love with her only he is so busy conning Kate he doesn;t realize he is in love with girl#2 while girl #2 can't reall decide if she is falling for Kate or Jack the hardest.  Kate and #2 end up out in the jungle or something overnight together and upon their return there are a lot of shy smiles and looks between them, some giggles despite the situation ...

How about Boston Legal?
Denny Crain!

Ms. Opal
