Meanwhile back in reality.....I was thinking about this today and I remember a TV programme on the BBC some time ago on new age stuff and astrology etc. It had a group of people who were given profiles by several people practicing alternative stuff like astrology etc. I remember there was an astrologer, a card reader and a mind reader and a couple of others but I forget exacty. ALL the people in the group who were given profiles by the practitioners and ALL said that the mind reader was the most accurate by far. The mind reader was actually a performer, who said he doesn't actually read minds but uses psychology and observation to get info out of his subjects. He was very impressive and gave by far the most info and most detailed info on everyone, which had me wondering as to what was the point of the other arts.

I've taken courses in Astrology, so I can actually say a couple things about this subject.

1. The underlying belief of astrology is not that the position of the stars in any way influences your life. Astrology is a belief that the macrocosm reflects the microcosm. (Not sure if I spelled that right, but thats not important.) The same way that both a solar system and an atom have the same fundamental shape to them- a central mass orbited by smaller masses. Its the same belief system that is behind that irisology or whatever, that looks at the iris of your eye and tells you about yourself.

2. Astrology as explained to me, is not a 100%, "This is the way your life is GOING to be" science. Your astrological chart is like your DNA. Your DNA might tell you that you have the potential to have heart disease, but that doesn't mean you will definitely have it. With diet and exercise, you may avoid it completely! Your astrological chart simply tells you the way your life has the propensity to go. Its up to you how you let that effect you.

3. To answer why you don't have negative chart readings from "professionals" thats easy. People don't want to hear about bad things in their lives. You don't make any money from telling people the negative things in their charts. Plain and simple. I've done readings of my own chart, and had readings done by others that were really not-so-nice. I've been told that I am scatterbrained, unreasonably mistrusting of strangers, and that I need a severe dose of self-confidence. (All true, by the way.)

In the end, I use astrology as a tool to get to know myself better. If a certain alignment of planets in my chart evokes a response in me, I need to study MYSELF and find out why. Like someone else already said, its like tarot. When you use it properly, it leads to introspection and questioning your subconcious.

Exellent synopsis Lorelei.

Much appreciated.

IT CERTAINLY isn't the same "astrology" the CHARLATANS use for frivolous purposes.

There is an INNER zodiac...not just "what is up in the sky".

I believe in astrology.

Cuddleheart, I wonder what Ted Bundy's chart would have read like?

"You have great manual dexterity." (Yeah, for strangling!)
"Blonds and brunettes attract you."
"You will be sought after by many people!"
"You will have much contact with those in authority." (LOL)

And you will never live to see old age...[:D]

okay, i know these 2 women who were born on the same day in the same year in the same hospital, even...and they couldn't be more unalike (is that a word?)
Totally opposite personalities, likes, dislikes, life paths...you name it, it's opposite

They make it hard for me to buy into the Astrology stuff.  I'm not saying it think it's total crap and no one should believe it.   It's just that they throw a major monkey wrench into it for me and establish reasonable doubt.

sissifytoserve -> RE: Astrology (10/24/2006 7:09:56 PM)

I don't...because EACH of those two people born on the same day will have DIFFERENT results with their readings.

Before I post the link explaining the folly of Astrology, I do want to say that I love hearing new age people talk about it because it is so soothing and so aesthetically pleasing.. probably because there are no real bad signs.. like Squatto the Toilet Cleaner... Horoscope for the Day: Your life sucks. End it now.

Here's the link with my favorite critical thinker: James Randi

No I did not put this in the wrong place, it is not a poll, and I am not asking people to list their astrological signs. These are serious questions.

Logically I can find no reason to believe in astrology, it is seemingly impossible that where the stars were when you were born would have an impact on your character and the flow of events in your life, but it seems that many people I know are very much outwardly like their sun signs, and the people I know that had their complete charts done were even more like their complete chart in a deeper way. It is kinda weird, has no scientific explanation to me.

Now I know that there are enough traits under each sign to give people some of each, and that we can all be stubborn, quick witted, a worrier, or some other random trait, but not all of us have a strong propensity to certain traits.

The reason for this thread is, how much do you feel you mirror your sun sign and ascendent sign (the two most important). Do you know what these signs are, have you had your chart done? If you have a partner do they resemble their sign or chart strongly, how about your unmentionables... do you have a chart for them, do they share the characteristics of their chart?

I don't know shit about this crap...I'm DEFINITELY a Leo, and it is total horsehit.

(But I'm definitely a Leo).

(Did I just entirely step in my own shit here?)

Excuse me? hack? James Randi has been exposing frauds like spoon bender Uri Gellar and Christian faith healer, Peter Popoff when you were in diapers, boy.

Here's the full list:

and for the record, I dont believe in sky gods, earth gods or fire gods. Male or female. I'm pure Atheist and proud of it.

Oh yeah..someone who has been around for 65 years or more is going to compete with a system that is THOUSANDS of years old.

Yeah ummmm hmmm ho hum.

Yup..mmmk.

See if Western Civilization is around in 100 years..THEN come back and talk to me about "what is real" and what isn't.

BTW..Im 35...you are 31..TECHNICALLY..that makes YOU the "Boy"

ZenrageTheKeeper -> RE: Astrology (10/24/2006 8:02:07 PM)

There are three possibilities:

1. God exists
2. God may exist
3. God does not exist

1. God exists. This requires evidence that god exists. There is no such evidence outside religious faith, and no methodology to obtain any such evidence. This statement is false.

2. God may exist. To claim that god may exist requires the assumption that God could exist under the right circumstances and that there is evidence to support that under these circumstances, God exists. Regardless of what knowledge may exist in the future, there is no such evidence now. This statement is currently false.

3. God doesn't exist. This requires no evidence because to assume it is false would be to state that one of the other statements is true and must have evidence to support them - which they don’t. Ergo, by default and until evidence exists to show otherwise, God does not exist.

The notion of "god" or "goddess" is not a valid default for a lack of scientific understanding or a lack of critical thinking regardless of how long the notion has been around. Religious or otherwise spiritual faith is not a subsititute for real empirical evidence that can be obtained in controlled circumstances, measured, reporduced, and compared. In civilized society, critical thinking will always be held as superior to merely "letting things slide" philosophically.

Just because less knowledgeable people in the past believed in spooks and specters, does not mean they existed, only that they were superstitious.

As part of a social stucture, the notion of religions, souls and other assorted boogeymen, outside of personal aesthetics, is entirely obsolete. Turn off the cosmic night light and grow up.

Fill in "God" with whatever supernatural bullshit pseudoscientific god or goddess you want to believe in. Astrology, Ghosts, psychic projection, wicca, Zeus, Allah, purple leprechauns under your bed. Do it multiple times for polytheistic garbage, for all I care.

If you wish you remain willfully ignorant, thats your choice, but dont expect to be respected for your beliefs if you can't validate them.

sissifytoserve -> RE: Astrology (10/24/2006 8:15:57 PM)

Ever consider that what you call "science" is absolute HORSESHIT..and came out of ALCHEMY ......ie WITCHCRAFT? (druids, Celts, ancient egypt) WHERE ASTROLOGY CAME FROM.

Thats YOUR problem if you want to make that disconnect.

Thats on YOU.

You ain't SHIT without the earth.

Period.

Were they born at the same time? The ascendent house, which is supposedly the second most influential house, is determined by the minute of birth

pqwinny -> RE: Astrology (10/24/2006 8:25:45 PM)

i don't know the answer to that j.o.   Could be the answer to the riddle!

Real science did evolve from those pseudosciences because when real scientists came around, they realized that real empirical evidence was superior in every way to merely guessing out of some psychologically appealing aesthetic.

In real science every real theory from gravity to heliocentricity is studied and through careful examinationof the methodologies used, the evidence gathered will either reassure the previous theories or make the old theories obsolete and make way for new ones. Magical based notions like alchemy where one item could be transmuted into another is absolute aesthetic bullshit, unless you honestly want to believe that the human body is running on phelgm, blood and yellow and black bile - btw, are black bile transplants still covered by your health insurance? Yes, a lot of current elemental names come from those days when "science" and poetry were interchangeable, but these are serious times now and people who actually want to contribute to the modern world and real civilization know when to push the aesthetically pleasing magical world aside to make way for real science and real critical thinking.

The earth is not a mystical life-binding force. The sun does not revolve around the earth. Your spirit does not exist beyond death because you think it does. Embracing crystals while sitting alone in your room at night will not make you find someone special. Placing your bed in a specific corner of the room will not help you find fame and fortune (Feng Shui). This kind of magical thinking is wholly obsolete. In every socially acceptable sense.

Deal with it, turn off your cosmic night light and grow up.
