its still october..it is supposedly breast cancer awareness month..
I was wondering how many people...yes i said PEOPLE men get breast cancer too....Iwas eondering how many of you have had your mamograms and yearly feel ups by your doctors??

I stand on a soap box and say please do not join me in the pool....

I had been ignoring hte pain in my breast for 5 years....and well when i finally went in and my midwife actually looked at me when she spoke to me...she saw me clench my breast...it was the beginning of my diagnosis.  I was 27 and had 3 children.. I figured the pain in my breast was breast feeding related..i had breast fed the thwo older ones and hadnt the energy to do it again...my little one at that time was only 2  i kept thinking the aching that came every once in a while was just dried milk...after all i was only 27...it doesnt happen to 27 year olds...   well 6 weeks later i had opted for a lumpectomy of the right breast and started the radiation and the chemo....by 3 months out  i was cranky and bald....trying to take care of my kids ...BUT   I WAS ALIVE.

Times passed 3  more children came (side note ...a lot of breast cancers are estrogen sensitive...mine was not..)  Yes you did do the addition correctly 6 kids a in all.and there i was 37 and in the process of a divorce and i had the crazy sensation...but i wouldnt pay attention to it....alas another visit to the midwife and another prescription for a mammogram.. and it was not good.  I followed up with a biopsy of the left breast which in turn was not good...my decision was to opt to have a double mastectomy.   I decided to undergo the mastectomy becasue i knew that i didnt have what it took to undergo the chemo radiation route..

It was nearly 2 years between mastectomy and reconstruction but it was time well spent rediscovering myself.  I found my inner strength I foudn that i was more than a pair of gigantic boobs or a pretty face...I was  a person and I had strength!  Here it is  one year after my reconstruction..and i appreciate everything i have been through.  It is a good life and I plan on living it to the fullest!

And so now I ask....are you planning on living it?... then go and get your mamography done!

dsamethyst,
What an inspirational story. I am 38 yrs old. I went for my first ever mammogram beginning of August 2006. Several mammogram and biopsy later, on August 24Th I got the phone call that I had breast cancer in my right breast. I had my lumpectomy a month later. All tissue came out cancer free thank goodness. I start up radiation around Thanksgiving time. I am also be put on a cancer drug for the next 5 years.  I am very thankful that my cancer was found early and I am fine.  I am glad they sent me for my mammogram.  Here I was thinking before hand that maybe I could get out of having one before hitting 40. I knew I would have to have them after that age. If I waited those 2 extra years who knows how bad the cancer could have gotten. I wish you all the best. Thank you for your story. Hopefully,  more people will get mammogram soon, before the chances of early detection is too late.

angels passion....

youa re a great help in getting the word out...one person is an odditity  two is a possible fact!
I too am on meds...I have been taking them since 1993...its been a long time and well it was a hard fight and I am a survivor...contrary to what some people think...a set of boobs a woman does not make!!
the one thing that i cannot wrap my mind around is the attitude of a few people becasue i chose to have the reconstruction surgery...becasue i was over weight sooo large busted at teh time of the mastectomy, I was left with  somewhat of a bustline!!! It took me nearly 2 years to save enough for the reconstruction. The insurance company felt that becasuse i had "reconstruction" at the time of the mastectomy it was all i was entitled to.   I paid cash upfront for a new set of boobs and well Im happy girl now that i have the femine shape i can accept as my new one.

Before the reconstruction i had a less than a cup...now im a c-d cup...and well it is the smallest i can handle!  It is also the largest my body could take becasue of the scar tissue, it doesnt expand then way regular tissue does!

Help me spread the word...a mastectomy today   saves a life tomorrow!!!!

I have had alot of problems which led to me losing my right ovary to a 20 + pound ovarian cyst that thank God was not cancerous so I get pap smears done every six months and ultrasounds twice a year to monitor the cyst on my left ovary and future cysts that may develop. I am 34 years old and never had a mammagram but do regular breast exams, I will be getting my first mammagram this coming year..I agree that it is VERY important to do get all tests....even men should remember prostate exams, very important!

For me I would have reconstruction but probably stay the size I am now about a C cup, but would possibly go up to a D if it fit, nothing higher .
Also please remind all the men & boys in your life to check their testicles for lumps as well. My nephew was only 24 when he found a lump (thanks to EMT training that he had). In less than a week it had noticibly larger so he went in for testing.  In the end he had 1 testicle removed and found out he had 2 types of testicular cancer, one the lump & the other lymph node related. He's been cancer free for 6 years and is the proud father of a beautiful little 4 yr old girl. So please, please have them check themselves or if your intimately involved do it for them, make it part of your service to Him if it helps. You might find a difference first. Same goes for checking your breasts for lumps, let your partner help check.

If God forbid I lost my breasts to cancer I would have them reconstructed to probably where they are today, a nice D cup...We all should visit our doctors regularly...I see my primary doctor every six months and my gyn every six months...you can never be too safe.

Hi,

I had been ignoring pain in right breast for about 6 months, started last June, as simple discomfort. I thought it was nothing, I'm an RN and I know breast pain is usully not cancer. In August I complained to my primary care who thought it was nothing...in november went to OB/GYN because the pain had gone from a dull ache to a burning/itching pain that had spread to the nipple area and still had really bad pain under my arm...he told me it was fibrocystic and was nothing..His exact words were "You don't have cancer"...I saw him again in January same problem..he said again "you don't have cancer"...I  decided to ignore him and have a mammogam paid for by me...well what do you know..an area of density in the right breast and what look like lymph node involvment...I go see a cancer specialist March 5th...maybe it is nothing but I sure as hell wish I had paid out of pocket sooner and gone in..I'm afraid I wasted 6 months and how much worse this might be because of it. Moral of the story if you think something is wrong push and don't ignore discomfort or pain in the breast area or under your arms. I want to bitch slap my OB/GYN for ignoring my complaints.
