i love Bill Hicks, honestly i only heard about him because one of my friends was one of his fans. i wonder if he does not suffer from a lack of publicity? i had never heard of him before my friend introducted me to him. i cannot escape the white trash humor of the blue collar comedy tour, but Bill Hicks is a hidden treasure.

(i repeated this question to my Master, who suggested that perhaps Hicks' sweeping indictment of the US puts too many people off).

I've been a diehard Bill Hicks fan since 1989 when I first heard of him. I can't explain why he is more popular in the Uk than he is in the US. Most likely it's just a perception, numerically there are probably as many if not more fans in the US. Many American comedians have memorialized Hicks since his untimely death of cancer in 1994. Also, Maynard and the boys from Tool dedicated AEnima to his memory. It is unfortunate that he isn't better known despite two HBO specials in the early 90s and many late night TV appearances including almost 12 on Letterman alone (almsot because the last having never aired).

There are several videos available for viewing and purchase through Sacred Cow Productions, run by long time Hicks friend and cohort, Keith Booth:

Also Ryko released several audio CDs; Rant in E Minor, Arizona Bay and Relentless.

Also plenty of goodies on his website, as well as information on his legacy, The Bill Hicks Foundation for Wildlife Rehabilitaiton:

Clearly one of the Soap's writers has a dark sense of humor, or perhaps likes to be tied to the headboard and ridden like a feedbag?

I had never heard of him while he was alive, but I recently saw something on Comedy Central about him. As I recall from that, his career took off in England first, and then as he was building on that momentum in the states he got cancer. But part of it his problem was being too controversial -- they mentioned his stuff getting edited out of Letterman's show because producers worried he would offend sponsors with a bit on religion, as I recall. So, it is hard to be popular when you can't get publicity like that.

But as long as we're talking about dead comedians, another who died way too young was Sam Kinison; I thought he was hilarious. And I'll also mention an old dead guy -- Redd Foxx, because I saw his XXX rated show once in Las Vegas, and I left with cramps in my sides from laughing so hard.

Kinison and Hicks were close friends having worked together at the comedy Workshop Hicks was involved in in Houston as his career was starting. You can see how they influenced each other in their different antics. Two tragic losses.

there is also a great Hicks tribute called "It's Just a Ride" with some great interviews of fellow comedians, family, friends and some hilarious segments. It goes into the Letterman debacle a bit as well.

Nice to see other Hicks fans on this site. :) Had a Hicks quote in my CM sig for a spell, though now it's Shakespeare. Next week Samuel Clemens? H.L. Mencken? :)

Anyone else here love reading the various sigs?

Best,
Joshua
