I had never heard of him while he was alive, but I recently saw something on Comedy Central about him. As I recall from that, his career took off in England first, and then as he was building on that momentum in the states he got cancer. But part of it his problem was being too controversial -- they mentioned his stuff getting edited out of Letterman's show because producers worried he would offend sponsors with a bit on religion, as I recall. So, it is hard to be popular when you can't get publicity like that. But as long as we're talking about dead comedians, another who died way too young was Sam Kinison; I thought he was hilarious. And I'll also mention an old dead guy -- Redd Foxx, because I saw his XXX rated show once in Las Vegas, and I left with cramps in my sides from laughing so hard.
