This is unprecedented to have so many military officers saying that ME policy is nuts, isn't it time that we all took notice and call the politicians to account?

Yes, the "mission was accomplished" when we caught Saddam!
We need to get our Troops out and let them get on with their Civil War.

It's not actually - it just hasn't been made public before.

As cold as that sounds Popeye, I fear you have hit the nail on the head.

We're in a dilemna.

If we stay, we're doing no good and getting our people killed.

If we go, we risk Iranian hegemony (spelling!?) all the way to the eastern Med via Iraq and Palestine. A soon to be nuclear power, sitting on a large proportion of the oil we need. Watch how fast Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia ally with the new Persian Empire and take control of the sea lane to the Suez Canal. That would truly be a nightmare. Saddam should have been left where he was, for however evil he was, he kept a check on the ME that in his absence will be filled by those forces he resisted. Remember, the new Iraqi authorities are well populated with former exiles who made friends in exile in Iran.

GWII was an unforgivable and monumental foreign policy disaster, for which yes, those responsible must be called to account, and might just have to be as ransom to our new Iranian overlords if we want to have access to oil and Suez.

This whole Iraq war was based on John Wayne style politics.

Ride into Town.
Kick Ass.
Kick More Ass.
Kick a Lot More Ass.
Ride off into the Sunset.
Fade to Black.(and once the curtain comes down there is no more accountability or responsibility to face)

Well I think its finally dawning on the chuckle-head-in-chief that its never so simple. Especially when the psycho-dictator in charge was actually a keystone whose removal caused an insurmoutable amount of social damage that the republicans don't know how to clean up.

It's unprecedented to say a policy is nuts in public. Anyone who knows a modicum of history know that in most wars the military disagree with the politicians over policy.

The Iranians and the Arabs have contempt for each other, what Arab alies the Iranians have is only out of convenience, it is only US and Britain (Big and little satan) that are uniting them. Once we leave they will soon start squabling.

I truly hope I am proved wrong by history MC, I really do. Trouble is, they have a universal hatred for us and a common religion which unites them. It would suit the Saudis no end to quieten their own people about cooperating with us and with a nuclear armed Iran as patron, the balance of their interests shifts considerably in my opinion.

The military follow orders given them by politicians. These officers declaring this conquest nuts do so because they have been told to do so. It is a ruse intended to sway voters in both the USA and the Netherlands. The politicians have no intention of giving up the conquest of Iraq. They have already expended hundreds of millions of dollars on it and thus are in over their head. This war is an expensive investment and they are not prepared to write that investment off as a loss. As far as they are concerned the conquest is proceeding quite nicely: ever so gradually more and more Iraqi people are killed - over 600 thousand now, is the last I heard - and that suits them just fine. Four years from now that number will be over one million dead Iraqi, we may expect.

We took it, we keep it. Don't we need another state in the Union?
Hey, it was good enough for the South.
