Amaros -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 8:06:36 AM)

It's roleplaying, and roleplaying in period when "men were men", etc. - guys dress up in armour and beat each other senseless, get all sweaty etc., so there a bit of jock appeal - women like to watch men compete it seems - then there's all the connotation of medieval violence and sex - damsels in distress, i.e., the roles are laid out, relatively unambiguously, men are dominant, women submissive, etc., although there are roles for spoiled princesses, etc. - the princess fantasy is a big draw for the women, I think. None of that modern daintiness and second guessing about motivations, being "earthy" is part of the ambiance, sex becomes an act in it own right rather than a symbol for other things and loaded with all sorts of baggage and identity issues as it often is in modern life - it's an old fasioned, ritualistic approach. So, kinda like BDSM, although you find all sorts of issues like that cropping up even in here. Plus, I think it probobly attracts a lot of Goreans, the roleplay is very similar to that in the Gor novels.
