LotusSong -> SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/29/2006 7:14:32 PM)

Just for conversations sake:

What has the SCA have to do with D/sBDSM?

ExSteelAgain -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/29/2006 7:21:27 PM)

Because the knights of old could rape and pillage? Honestly, I don't have a clue. Good question and one I think has always been in the back of my mind, too.

There tends to be an overlap between the two.  I bought my first flogger at Pennsic XXIII and went to a munch at Pennsic XXIV.

It's part of a kink I guess, like all the other stuff we play with.

What is SCA?

The Society for Creative Anachronism....it's "the" medieval re-creation organization...they hold regular events, annual wars, all sorts of fun stuff.

Thank You.  i'll check it out!

While the SCA does not promoste BDSM in any way, and has a large number of members who participate with their children, there are also a number of people in the SCA who are also into BDSM. When i was active a few years ago there was a seperate campsite for BDSM activites, complete with floggings outside in the trees, suspension from the trees, and a tent with some other devices for play. Anytime someone purchased a new flogger everyone had to try it out, and the kilt check involved leaving a mark if worn by a sub. There was a massage table set out for anyone's use... and a line most of the time :D

One great aspect of the SCA events is that it allows poly families to interact with each other without rasing eyebrows, as any story about the characters involved can explain why there are two or three women at this man's beck and call, or why this lady has multiple male servants vying for her attention...

Those with a D/s or M/s dynamic are able to live their lifestyle without suspicion by having the slave's/sub's character be enslaved to the Master's/Dom's character. How hot it is to be able to wash Master's feet in fromt of others without raising an eyebrow...

Before a name brand beer company bought out the Renn Faires there were alot more sexual activites happening in those venues. Now it seems the adult fun is happening more at wars and such than at faires.... at least that has been my experience.

Yes thank you for that Sonnet.. Apparently Lotus was having a telepathic moment in regards to some of us. grin

SirLordTrainer -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 4:27:22 AM)

Im not really experienced enough with the Renaissance Faires and such to say, other than I know two lifestyle submissives that attend those events from time to time. Ive pondered checkin it out a time or two, I just might sometime.

LotusSong -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 7:12:10 AM)

...and here I thought it was all  about re-enacting  the Middle Ages.

What's next?  Civil War BDSM?

This is what we get for being "all inclusive".. it morphs beyond recognition and more into a costume party.  (but it IS cute!)

Now I know how the original gay leathermen felt when the floodgates opened.

Amaros -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 8:06:36 AM)

It's roleplaying, and roleplaying in period when "men were men", etc. - guys dress up in armour and beat each other senseless, get all sweaty etc., so there a bit of jock appeal - women like to watch men compete it seems - then there's all the connotation of medieval violence and sex - damsels in distress, i.e., the roles are laid out, relatively unambiguously, men are dominant, women submissive, etc., although there are roles for spoiled princesses, etc. - the princess fantasy is a big draw for the women, I think. None of that modern daintiness and second guessing about motivations, being "earthy" is part of the ambiance, sex becomes an act in it own right rather than a symbol for other things and loaded with all sorts of baggage and identity issues as it often is in modern life - it's an old fasioned, ritualistic approach. So, kinda like BDSM, although you find all sorts of issues like that cropping up even in here.

Plus, I think it probobly attracts a lot of Goreans, the roleplay is very similar to that in the Gor novels.

Lashra -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 9:00:15 AM)

It is the roleplay. I have a friend thats a 24/7 slave and she invited Me and my sub to join in on some of the events. I made sure that Dominant females/sub males were welcome first as I am not a submissive female and will not pretend to be one. She said yes of course, lots of Ladies walk around with their males in tow so its not a problem.

They are alot of fun as well as the Ren faires.

Mavis -> RE: SCA and D/sBDSM connection? (10/30/2006 9:27:54 AM)

Now, if there were Roman Republican era reenactment clubs, can bet i'd be there in my roleplay mindset, so i can kind of see why those with medieval interests feed both interests with these gatherings.

Since there aren't, my options seem to be something like Animal House Toga party...  and John Balushi is a hard limit for me..
