Newcastle Brown Ale is used for a reason Ron! It clearly requires the courage to drink it which every soccer fan needs when the team are down for relegation, and the fortitude (the following morning) to withstand heavy defeats every week. Its symbolic you see - a bit like red wine in church being Jesus' blood.

The absence of this hallowed purgative in soccer is what makes other countries' fans a poor lot compared to our own. Ours can put up with that sickening feeling of "oh no, not again" due to a great deal of practice with the NBA, which provokes similar feelings.

i would have declined to work that event.

I made almost $500 US for a job where I had to work 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

there's not enough money to make me get on that boat

So, how much would it take then?

WHY?

So...you macho Brit types can explain "offsides".  HAH.  That's child's play.  You want to explain a REAL sports rule....

...What's "Icing"?

(HEY BENJI...North of the Border Doggies can answer, but see if anyone else gets it).

Oh all right.

"Icing" is when a player shoots the puck across the center line and it goes on to cross the opposing goal line untouched.  I'm sure the official wording is more technical, but that's what it is.

Well you only got it 1/2 right.   That is "automatic icing" as called in European leagues, but for NHL, you need more.

Oh, yeah, a player on the opposing team (other than the goaltender) has to touch the puck after it crosses the goal line.

Now how about the difference between Defensive Holding and Illegal Use of Hands?

I don't know.  It appears they are identical.

Now, what's a Balk?

defensive holding is grabbing or wrapping your arms around a blocker, illeagle use of the hands is hands to the face

Defensive holding sounds way more fun than illegal use of hands.

I am sure there are some football players who may enjoy that a wee bit more than some others.
They tend to be the ones who also like to snap others players asses with their towel. <Bastards>

A balk is called if the pitcher does not come to a complete stop before delivering the ball.

It's WAY more complicated than that.  Essentially, a balk is called if the pitcher violates any one of a number of rules that are designed to prevent him deliberately deceiving a baserunner.  Here, the balk is described in Rule 8.05, and you'll see how lengthy the verbiage is:

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/official_info/official_rules/pitcher_8.jsp

Anyway, here's a fun one I thought of the other night.  There are a few rules written into the NFL rule book with the purpose of preventing a team from benefiting from a penalty--for example, the principle that a half cannot end on a defensive penalty: you can't just wait for time to expire and then deck all the receivers.  If the half ends on a defensive penalty, the offensive is awarded a final untimed snap after the penalty is enforced.

Now--

Can you think of similar devices?  Again, something in the rule book that prevents a team from benefiting from a penalty.
