Prozac........Not the Real Thing?

      For the past few days, I've been hearing alot of local buzz (probably because I live close to Pfizer) about the so-called serotonin-boosting (SSRI) effects of the drug Prozac, being "found out" to be a complete and utter placebo, with fake research being produced by Pfizer for the purpose of  pushing this Leviathon of the mental health world to the masses.  Where are all of these people getting this from?  Has it been a recent article or clip in the news?  Does anyone have a link?
 
       I wasn't quite sure where to post this, because I've just been hearing things through the grapevine, and don't have any solid, concrete evidence.

Status: offline 		I haven't heard anything about Prozac being fake. I know that Pfizer is not the only ones that have done research on Prozac, so I'm assuming if it IS fake somone like the University of Pittsburgh (who studied it in connection with halting eating disorders) would have told us.

However, it is true that in some people, Prozac has the exact opposite effect of what its supposed to. It creates severe mood swings and can make people violent and unstable. It can also be dangerous if used in conjunction with migraine medicine and can cause "abnormal bleeding".

This would be why I don't advocate "better living through chemicals". *sigh* I know there are people out there with actual physical causes for depression, and if anti-depressants help them out, great! But I am so sick and tired of prozac and paxil and wellbutrin and so on being prescribed to anyone who just has a bad day or feels a little blue now and again. Guess what? Life is tough. Deal with it.

when my psychatrist deemed that i needed to be on meds i was put on that exact medication. reflecting on it i really really hated it! i hated the feeling of being druged when i first got on it, i hated the side effects of feeling like i was being squished by graveity and having a slow and painful death when i was taken off it..just not a good thing. but i guess it served it's purpose because my psychatrists has told me i don't need any more medication for the time being.

Status: offline 		Effexor can be very difficult to quit, I don't know if the long release formula has that problem.  But many people have reported severe flu-like symptoms.  You can google under effexor withdrawal syndrome.  It's supposed to relieve the syndrome if you taper off slowly, extremely slowly.

My guess would be the Scientologists have just made up more nonsense about Prozac. My conspiracy theory is that Scientology views Prozac as a big competitor for the lucrative market they try to tap into to peddle their "religion", so they have been running a smear campaign against it.

Tom Cruise has been quoted saying idiotic things about somene (was it Brooke Shields?) having depression, and other Scientologist have tried claiming that Prozac causes people to commit suicide -- the proof is that Prozac users have higher suicide rates than "normal" people. Well duh! They're depressed!

Status: offline 		I know that alot of times, human neurosis that leads to depression can be misdiagnosed as "clinical depression", which is a chemical imbalance, and that both need to be treated using different methods.

Although the stuff that I'm hearing could be total bunk, I'm under the impression that depressed neurotics could be helped by placebos when taken with an adequate amount of therapy.  In my personal opinion (which doesn't mean too much, seeing as I have degrees in jack-shit)  clinical depression and attention-deficit-disorder have both been overdiagnosed to the point of insanity, and that these actual chemical imbalances are much rarer than people think.

Status: offline 		Therapy is important in the treatment of depression.  For some it is enough, they work on the cognitive elements and learn new ways of thinking.  But many do benefit from psychotropic drugs too.  There is also a window during the treatment of depression when suicide risk is higher, because the patient has the energy to fulfil some of those ideations.  Anyone with depression should be closely monitored especially in the early period of drug treatment.

Status: offline 		Effexor withdrawal symptoms, just know the following basic things:

1. The bad stuff won't last forever.
2. TAPER!! If possible, do NOT go cold turkey. Slowly decrease your dosage little by little (divide your capsules into smaller dosages of beads if you have to) until you're done. It may take a long time (it took me five months), but it's much better for you that way.
3. Drink plenty of water.
4. Get plenty of sleep.
5. Clear Motion herbal anti-nausea/motion sickness capsules helped me a lot with the physical symptoms of nausea, vertigo, headaches, etc.
6. Try to avoid other sources of stress, when at all possible, during your withdrawal/discontinuatio n period.
7. Hang in there and take care of yourself!!

Status: offline 		I was upset to learn that my mom was put on it for her hotflashes and I urged her to have them put her on something else.  I had no idea that anti-depressants were used for hotflashes.

Status: offline 		I am scared about going off Effexor because I forgot to take my medicine for two days and I had headaches that would rock your world ..no other side effects other than some trembling which I assumed was my blood sugar but wasn't...I went from 150 mg to now I have been on 75mg for the past few days with a mild headache...trying to slowly take myself off the meds and go on an herbal treatment for my bipolar/ depression...I was told by my doctor that upping the dosage wouldn't cause any complications..that may be true..UNLESS YOU TRY TO QUIT THE MEDS!

Anyway, any antidepreesent drug will have a chemical reaction on the brain, and since everyone is wired different, it only stands to reason that some people will have different effects.

Status: offline 		Ask your doc if you can take twice as long to wean off than is recommended.  That may help.  And try to schedule the worse of it (the first few days without any effexor) for a time when you aren't working and can try to sleep it off.

mine was more than flu symptoms. it was bizare, unfortunatly i wasn't given an option of being taken off it slowly, i was forced to get off it cold turkey which i suggest anyone not to do..not fun.

but just after my experience and seeing/reading others via support groups etc expereinces i  think drugs are a real temporary fix up and natural alternatives mixed with therapy would be a better soulution. but that is just my personal opinion.

I have had some luck with black cohosh for hot flashes, if anyone cares.

Status: offline 		I take Effexor XR 300mg a day in Conjunction with 80mg of Geodone- I could not be anymore stable and free from bipolar episodes! Not every drug works for everyone!!!

Status: offline 		I also take migraine meds due to wierd headaches that they have chalked off to migraines after a CAT scan and other tests. I take Inderol and Imitrex daily to manage my headaches. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to take your meds at the same time everyday so that these MEDs remain at a constant blood level in your system at all times & not causing a hormonal imbalance in your brain!
