Hey folks, it just came to my attention that i know diddly squat about healthy eating.  Specifically what i should be eating to maintain blood sugar.  See, i thought i had the vitamins and mineral intake down but i never calculated for blood sugar.

So i need some meal ideas.  Or just like food ideas?  Some one hooked me up with Food network, but it looks complicated and wierd soooo..  Like breakfast?  Cos i'm of the thought that like Special K for breakfast is a darn good breakfast.  Maybe add some yogurt?  <shrugs>  Like lunch ideas?  Dinner ideas?  Good snack ideas?  Yesterdy for breakfast i had cantaloupe and OJ and i thought that was fantastic!  Do you all have anything up your sleeve that is relatively simple, easy but yet considered really healthy?  I can cook.. (sorta and some things.. but)  well i like cooking things i know!  And i love forzen foods!  Like the big massive lasgna's that you throw in the oven for 2 hours.  Or um a thing of frozen spinach.. add some salt?  Sounds like a good lunch!

So yeah.. recipe ideas?

Men's health magazine's "The Ab Diet"
Good for men and women, just happens to be put out by Men's Magazine.

Look at the Glycemic Index. This will help you control your body's response to sugar/carbs. Sugars and carbs are not BAD...but anything that we get too much, or too little, of can be bad FOR us.

It looks like a dieting website...and it is.  But it's also a healthy eating website.  And it's free.  You can tell it what things you want to account for - blood sugar, cholesteral, etc and it comes up with menu plans.  It also has a large recipe section.

To maintain blood sugar levels (I don't know if yours is high or low - mine's low, I'm hypoglycemic), the best thing to do is to snack every two to three hours.  Hard chew fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots, celery, etc) are best because they take the body longer to break down.

I am diabetic.  It was destined.   Has run in the family for generations.   Diets have to be tailored to the individual.  I personally use a modified atkins diet - Gotta have my one loaf of garlic bread a month.  As an example.   I have found that garlic helps maintain blood surgar levels in some poeple (myself included).  they have free classes sponsored by hospitals for diebetics.   You might consider going to one of those and talking to the dietician.

OH I forgot to tell you.   Walmart has sugar free baby ruths   mmmmmmm   love them.   In Walmart's pharmacy department there are also other diabetci food suppliments and treats.

Lots of fresh fruits and veggies.  If you buy frozen or canned fruits, make sure they're unsweetened and in their own juice, instead of in syrup.  Have a double portion of veggies instead of starchy carbs.  Potatoes, pasta, bread, and some vegatables are starchy carbs.  Switch to diet soda, if you're a sodaholic, like myself.  Cut as much sugar and processed foods as possible.  Eat smaller meals at your regular meal times, and add in a healthy snack or two between those meals to keep your sugar at a steady level.  If you're diabetic, test your blood sugar around meal times, or as directed by your doctor.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the links, i'll check them out.  Course i've a thread in the Health section about blood sugar levels which was what made me want to post this one.

Bah - my sugar has been low all day.  I've done everything i could think of.  Its not raising.  I desperately want a soda, but i'm afraid that'll make me feel worst.  Tho, i'm one to listen to the body and my body is saying "gimme"  ha

As far as veggies and stuff go.  I LOVE veggies and actually just went through house and home on them recently and i havent gotten my butt back to the grocery store, so i've been out for a few days.  Maybe thats all i need.  Some celery.
