Ok, I've seen a number of folks admit that they're geeks and scifi fans and the like. To those of you who have an opinion, what do you think of the new Battlestar Galactica series on the scifi channel?

So far I'm givin' it a thumb up (holdin' out on the 'two thumbs up', though). Significantly better production values over the original and some changes to the plot that, I believe, promises some interesting story lines. I'm waiting to see if it remains interesting or loses my attention.

Your thoughts?

Having watched the whole of the first series when it was originally aired, and watching the new one now, I have to say that the new one is very interesting.

I miss Apollo's sister. I have to give mad props to Mr. Olomos (sp) for his portrayal of Adama. Much more dynamic character now.

I was dubious about replacing Starbuck and Boomer with women, but it's working, against all expectations. The story has more detail in it now and I like that, like this whole subplot with the water and lack of supplies (shortage of cigarettes, only three suits of clothing for the rest of their life and so on). So I think all in all it's much better.

To be sure, the effects are MUCH better, but that's only to be expected with the advance of the art in the ensuing years.

Comparring the two shows is very much a matter of comparring apples and tomatos. There are common elements that I appreceiate, but there are differences that set the new one off.

I agree. I think, however, that the added subplots evolving around some of the enemy looking human, and perhaps being programmed to believe they're human, affords a lot of potential for short term surprises and long term subplots. Besides, this show has that whole 'forbidden erotica' thing goin' on, in addition to the classic 'family/heros/saviors of the world' themes taken from the first series. It's much more 'dark', I think.

The connections with the prior series creates the 'nostalgia spark' in me, as well, but overall I'd say I'm glad they were not sticklers for recreating an old series.

You know, I don't remember Apollo's sister. Now I have to go look it up.

Master and i love sci fi and have been watching since day one. i cannot compare to the original series as it was before my time (i believe i was alive when it came on, but just a lil kid). i really like Edward James Olmos and i'm glad to see him here.

i really, really enjoy the series, so far it seems to have more of an ongoing plot than Star Trek or Star Gate ever did, which i really like. (ie, each week is not a whole new story on a new planet with new supporting charecters...)

We were surprised when they ended the third (i think) episode with a cliffhanger.... poor Starbuck!

Apollos' sister is Athena. I like the original show and the new, I was worried when I heard reports that it would be like Beverly Hills 90210 "but in space!"
I love the old show with the 3 cylons per fighter... the new ones just dont do it for me. Remember...part of the coolness of the Cylons was the way they talked.. the new drones are pretty quiet now-a-days. I also used to write for a online game that is a spin off of Galactica "Battlestar Helios" And hell yea i wrote the Cylons! Banshee, Klurg, Ghost... had a blast being the funner, eviler side of the game.

Ya know, Star Gate's productions values have come up in recent season's as well! You're right, though, Gallactica (am I spelling that right?) seems to have more of a serial feel to it.

I suspect there are more cliff hangers to come. Especially if it's going to be serial in nature and not necessarily self contained stories. Nature of the beast.

Athena is right, brunette with big hair. Don't know who played her.

I did appreceiate the touch of getting the actor who played the original Apollo to play the main bad guy on the prison ship and capture the current Apollo. Nice and subtle.

Yes, it is most definately darker. Tell you what, Boomer needs to move her ass and his ass off Caprica before they get left behind by the rest of the fleet.

I don't really like the new Baltar too much. He's more mentally deficient than evil as the first was. And some of the American/Earth culture is starting to pervade the show, which is a distraction.

Case in point: the 21 gun salute when Zak Adama was burried. That comes from the custom of discharging your cannon when parking in port, to show that you are now unarmed and no threat to the shore and port back in Queen Elizabeth the First's time. It mutated into a salute of respect, and there would be NO way a culture of aliens (for all intents and purposes) would have adopted the same set of customs. Same with the Altimiter in the Viper (it's almost a duplicate of the altimiter in current fighter jets in the US military) and so on.

Things like that tend to stand out to me, but I'm a military and history buff.

Haven't you seen the robot cylons in the new series? They're pretty kewl, actually. More streamlined. I agree, I'd like to see more of them. Although protracted battle scenes with them would probably bore me. It's TV, not a video game (I don't get to direct the fight!) so I tend to want to move the story along.

The babe who's doin' the scientist is pretty hot. Enough to make a body wonder "where can I order a cylon?"

Wow, wasn't even aware of the new series but I was a huge fan growing up. Gonna have to look into this, sounds great! Finally some reality TV I can stomach....

HAHAHA OMG, I hate reality TV (glorified game shows). SciFi has it on after both of the star gates (SG1 & Atlantis) on friday nights where I am.

Well, I didn't really care for the original Galacticas but I did watch some of one of the new ones and I didn't care for it either so I flipped it off.

As for another revived old show, I really like the new Outer Limits shows, but they've been on for a few years. And another space show I really liked was Babylon 5[/i.

It's a great series. I just wish they'd stop calling it "Battlestar Galactica". Honestly, in my own mind, I just call it "Bladerunner Wars" - it's about 50 years after the movie, and the replicants are finally wiping out the last of the humans. The whole damn series makes a lot more sense in that context, in my opinion.

I can not say that they have significantly better production values. You have to remember WHEN the original series was created. BSG was the first science fiction program to bring big movie special effects to television. It looks hokey now, but those effects were a big deal when I was a kid. By comparison, the current series uses run-of-the-mill set pieces and CGI animation. They're not breaking any new ground.

I will say that the writing is improved. Aside from the first couple "Jews in Space" episodes, an awful lot of the later stories were just old movie plots rehashed into a space opera setting. It was a common occurrence of the day, of course, and they did well with what they had, but a bit more care has gone into story, dialogue, and scripting. I can't say I'm a fan of the gritty drama as a genre, but I'm willing to forgive them for the geek value.

I will say that it takes a butch woman to replace Dirk Benedict. He was just too god damned pretty.

Can't say that I've seen many of either of those shows. Babylon 5 was ok, but I don't remember if I owned a tv then. I go through periods of a 'kill your tv' mindset sometimes, so there are big gaps of a few years at a time when I missed whatever was on. The Babylon 5 era was one of those times.

That's hilarious! I'm in agreement with you, by the way. Starbuck as a woman rocks - but then my favorite character in the recent King Author movie was gweneviere (sp?) specifically because my biggest problem with any other version of chamelot I've seen makes gwen a simpering wimp that isn't worth 'saving' and that version of K.A. made her a bad ass.

Badass women are great protagonists! Hell, they're great antagonists (reference my earlier comments about #6).

As for production values being improved or not, I think the values of the new show are significantly improved over the old - and I agree with you that they are not ground breaking by today's standards. They are still better than the old show, though. I suppose I am a bit more forgiving on this issue because it's tv.

Besides, the old BG ended up back on Earth and once they did that it seemed like the effects became an afterthought. The old show lost me once they made it to earth (although i will admit to wanting one of those flying motorcycles).

I laughed outright when you compared it to Bladerunner. I can certainly see the parallels. But I have no problem with it being BG. The notion of AI rebelling against their creators isn't new but there does seem to be a resurgence of it as storyline in recent years (in the genre).

Honestly, the first episode I saw, which was also the premiere..I was really disappointed. Starbuck and Boomer were women?!?!? Gah! I had a similiar reaction to Tom Cruise playing Lestat, so it's not a sexist reaction...rather, more of a lack of continuity...artistic dishonesty, etc.

After the initial shock had subsided I found that I really enjoy the new episodes. The characters are believeable and are well portrayed, the plot is good, and the special effects are outstanding.

Haven't seen the new Battlestar Galatica, but I LOVED the original series.

And - this is gonna date me somewhat - Space 1999!

I even had the little metal ship with the little capsule ship that you rolled out with a crank and string!

Bet that sucker is worth a fortune now too. Wah!
