November surprise? Why or why not?

LadyEllen -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 9:31:20 AM)

Big surprise, considering how long they have been at the damned thing and how many stops and restarts they've had.

No surprise, for the reason we all know.

What I meant by that is there is an election here on Tuesday in which the Republican party is slated to lose bigtime... we have a term called "October Surprise" meaning something pulled out of the bag to distract people from their intended votes and sway them in another direction... since most people are voting on the issue of the war in Iraq, I was pondering if the timing of this had anything to do with the sentence. I heard a talking head speculating about this verdict and sentence in regard to the election two weeks ago... I remembered that and thought it might be an interesting discussion

sissifytoserve -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 9:36:39 AM)

Perfect timing.

I still think the Repugs are going to lose...and rightly so.

MmakeMme -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 9:46:42 AM)

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.

And my wish is ... that I had something interesting to add.

But since I'm feeling talkative and have a vast amount of killable time on my hands, I will add nothing. Except this. Which is something. Sort of.

Julia - that was how I understood it, but thanks for the explanation. The "reason we all know" is the one to which you alluded. "Mission Accomplished" (aint I just the goddamndest best cowboy y'all ever saw?) kind of thing.

Vote Democrat - at least they're not Republicans!

Although I may take that advice out of necessity the saddest part is that is the nicest thing one can say about many of them... very sad indeed

Level -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 9:59:33 AM)

It's awfully hard to not see the verdict coming a couple of days before the elections as intentional, but I don't think it'll save many Republicans (or Democrats that favor the war, for that matter).

MmakeMme -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 10:02:27 AM)

God, we are all so jaded. How did this happen? Ohhhhhhhh, new thread.

..........from Tony Snow, White House Spokeman  "You now have absolute proof that you've got an independent judiciary in Iraq."...........made me laugh in the context of this thread.

Glad to see my opinion is not too far off the mark Julia! I dont see anything inspiring about the Dems that would make me choose them - its rather that I find the Reps are so damned hateful that the Dems are the only realistic way of unseating them. We have a similar situation here with Conservatives and Labour - one tends to vote against a party, rather than for one.

If the verdict actually surprised anyone, I would be deeply concerned for the survival of the species.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 11:19:26 AM)

Not sure if the intent is to boost the republican ticket. But, honestly, I don't know of anyone republican or democrat who really cares about saddam at this point. He's already locked up, and a non-threat. So, I can't really see it having an impact one way or the other.

Not even close.... A true November surprise would be a depleted-uranium attack on Iran. I still think something may happen shortly after the election. However, if you let the announcement of this verdict change your mind, you're a real sucker.

The praise of Tony Snow for an independent Iraqi Jusdiciary is hilarious, his administration is fighting so hard against an independent American judiciary with the help of the republican rubber stamp congress. The Iraqi court wanted 2 weeks to review the case to eliminate causes for appeal but the US insisted it be released now to help failing republicans hopes.

popeye1250 -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 12:31:47 PM)

If they want to do something to curry favor with the voters this ain't it.
How's about announcing that we're getting out of the "U.N.", "Nafta", or massive deportations?
This doesn't do anything for me.
I'll still vote for Independant Candidates.
As for Saddam I hope at least they'll televise his execution so we can watch him swing.
And I hope they do it very soon like in the next week.
Or maybe they can chop off his head with one of those big curvey swords!

Yeah Popeye... .I'd be happy if both sides also announce they're no longer going to let think tanks like the Heritage foundation or Council on Foreign Relations influence construction of domestic and foreign policy.

Ranger, AFFIRMATIVE on that!
That's called "White Collar Welfare."
Those people should be cast out into the D.P.S. ("Dreaded Private Sector") where they might have to actually "produce" something instead of being overpaid "academics."
And they can take the State Dept with them too!

Snow said some even funnier stuff, claiming that anyone who thought the timing of this had anything to do with the election was the sort of conspiracy theorist who wears tin foil helmets.

Of course, the republicans were saying the recent news about republican congressman Mark Foley's gay pedophile scandal was politically timed; I can't recall if Tony Snow was included in those who said that, but maybe he was wearing his tin foil helmet at the time.

sissifytoserve -> RE: Timing of the Saddam Death Sentence (11/5/2006 2:29:48 PM)

Actually...tin foil helmets ATTRACT radio waves..so...the "theory" that it protects you from mind control is just crap.

Kind of like how government huggers think their own government would never hurt or kill their own citizens. Its total crap.
