"If the cat is lonely, even being shouted at in the middle of the night may be positive reinforcement of a bad behavior. "I'm lonely and bored! I'll wake up mommy and then I won't be lonely or bored anymore! She'll play with me!" Cat howls, mom wakes up, mission accomplished."

Even if you kept a full super-soaker watergun by the bed, and being wakened was tantamount to a dousing? In past years I've had good luck with super-soakers to keep cats from feeling entitled to counter tops, table tops, etc. It works and you don't even have to be in the same room with them, as long as you have a clear shot.

My current cat, however, is perhaps the weirdest cat that ever walked. He was a rescue. He was between 2 and 3 years old when he was found emaciated in the parking lot of a grocery store. He'd already been neutered and declawed all the way around (yup...all four paws). I swear to you this cat doesn't realize he can use his teeth as a weapon.

He is the quintessential "fraidy cat." He rarely ever comes out of hiding if there are other people in the house. After four years with sherri and her rat-dog he now comes out when they are around as long as nobody's moving around the house.

But between 11:00 pm & 1:00 am he starts insisting that it's his turn for me to pet him. Nobody else, just me. Then he hogs the bed until I kick him off.

I had a friend that kept him for me for about 6 months. She had three daughters and they didn't believe he was really there. Lawrence has kept him for me for a while as well. He could tell you some stories about this cat.

He is, without a doubt, the strangest cat who ever picked me. We call him "Smut" He's a gray domestic long hair.
