A question for all of the beautiful Mistress's.  What scents do you love to use in a scene?  Including candle scents, incents, oil burners?
Which particular do you find are most relaxing, uplifting, and just smell so good?

That is a great question.  Does anyone use aromatherapy knowledge during scenes?

Lorelei115 -> RE: Scents (11/6/2006 7:55:15 AM)

I tend not to use heavily perfumed candles or incenses (I am very sensitive to scent and it makes me sneeze) but a light hint of scent in the air can contibute so much to a scene.

The key I think is trying to match your mood to a scent. If you are feeling playful, a light, floral scent is good. If you are feeling very intense, something like a musk or sandalwood works well. If you are feeling romantic and passionate, rose and vanilla are good choices. If you are roleplaying, you can match the kind of scent you want to the mood you want to convey. IE using a "rain" scent to invoke the feeling of being outdoors, or "Egyptian Goddess" (My personal favorite) during a "religious" scene. I don't like using food based ones during a scene (Apple Pie, Sugar Cookie, etc) because I find most of them smell fake, but the ones that don't just make me hungry! The exception to that is scents like ginger and cinnamon. The sweet, spicy smells of both of those tend to arouse me in interesting ways. [:D]

I use what I'd like during every day normal hours. So, that means citrus scents, flower scents and leather scent. If I'm doing a ritual, the scents I use in everyday cleansing are cedar and sage, so I'd use those for an SM ritual, too.

I use my favorite scents to set the mood.  I do not have any particular scent I use for a specific scene or to set a particular mood outside my own enjoyment of it.  However, the use of aromatherapy is interesting and I would like to see if others use that as well.  It might be fun to try and see if it aids in the scene.

Thanks for the replies, I'm curious as well about aromatherapy.

MisPandora -> RE: Scents (11/6/2006 10:27:18 AM)

I sage my spaces before use.

I generally burn incense that has energy for me -- sandalwood, cedar, or something I've made specifically for the individual (I work with rosins like frankinsense, myrrh, dragonsblood, etc.)

As far as other scents, my candles are generally vanilla or unscented, and I will occasionally use essentials in a diffuser if the scene calls for it.

As much as I love them, I cant use any scents anymore.  Angel's allergies make it nearly impossible to use a scent that doesnt ruin the scenes (or anything else we are doing) with sneezing fits.
When I can, I tend to use flowery or spice scents, rose and cinnamon being my favorites.

That is very nice that you are sensitive to Angel's allergies.  I myself am sensitive to many perfumes and can't stand to enter one of those places that sells scented candles.  There are some that I can tolerate and even enjoy, but others immediately give me a headache and are extremely difficult for me to be around.

My oldest daughter begins to sneeze when we even get near the scented candle section of a store.  So I can fully empathize with your sub!  Some women wear such heavy perfume that I just want to be in another room![:'(]

Yes, definitely.  I use actual aromatherapy, and I also use "role play" scent as Lorelei mentions.   I am very scent-sensitive (always have been) and I wonder if that is something that people who are into WIIWD find with eachother?  Sort of follows the idea of enhanced sensuality generally.

If I have the luxury of being able to prepare the scene area in advance, I tend to use lighter, welcoming scents that are citrus based, with some ocean and salt accents.  I tend not to use scented candles as most of these put a lot of petroleum-based oil into the air.  I will use a high quality incense if I want a sense of an enclosed, "smoky" place.

For myself, I wear a custom-blended cologne that is vetiver based.  Sometimes I'll wear a heavier scent.  I don't overuse it, but I will add some before a scene.  My girl can wear what she chooses, or sometimes what I'll have picked out for her.  I will sharpen my focus with an orange or tangerine-based oil (or the actual fruit), or sometimes with a mint/eucalyptus blend.

Don't underestimate the power of those role-play based scene scents.  If I'm doing a medical scene, the smells of rubbing alcohol and insulin (an unmistakeable "hospital" smell) will make a doctor's office appear in an ordinary living room, or dungeon corner.  Some of the scents "natural" to WIIWD (leather, paraffin candles, a varnished hardwood paddle) can be enhancers.  I don't do nursery scenes, but I'd imagine the scent of baby powder and other items are key to maintaining the "feel" of the scene.  If you are doing a "religious" scene, incense and beeswax will go right to the head of any submissive who was raised in the Catholic church.

(PS:  Pandora, when you say you "sage" your spaces...do you mean you smudge them?  Or what?)

damia -> RE: Scents (11/6/2006 12:04:24 PM)

Cinnamon is a powerfully erotic scent, and my former Master used it in many scenes, as well as sandalwood and citrusy smells, all incense. i also use scented massage lotions/oils that depend heavily on the who, what, and why.

On a different level, colour therapy is also great...get a lamp that can feel the entire space with light, and put a different coloured bulb depending on mood (blue, red, yellow, green, blacklight, etc). This can be a powerful addition to any scene.

Yes, smudging.  Actually, my last stick I made was a combination of white sage, desert sage and juniper.

Added: I distinctly have two separate phases to smudging, and don't always do both steps, thus my being specific to "saging".  In ritual spaces or when I do totem work, I will do a second circle with sweetgrass.  The Ojibwae thought it drew good intentions and spirits for your work.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Scents (11/6/2006 9:01:39 PM)

Pandora:  Interesting.  My wife has used smudging in various spaces to cleanse them.  My only problem is that I really dislike sage.  Its tolerable, but not favored as a scent, and I can barely tolerate it in food.  And for various reasons, sage is the new-age smudge gold standard.

I've made her smudge sticks with juniper, sassafrass and pinion pine.  I'm thinking I might use applewood or mesquite, but I'm worried the effect will be to make me hungry!

Like pandora mentioned...sweetgrass is wonderful for smudging the area. Where sage is more cleaning our negativity, sweetgrass seems to lighten the place up. (Or at least these are the energies i feel when dealing with them.)
