This is great news....watch for Cheney to go out with chest pains in the next sixth months - I read somewhere he's got twelve percent approval rating.

They shoulda got the message when over a year ago nine generals called for his ouster.

I'm glad to hear this regarding the effect it will have on policy; however it also means we will be deprived of any more of his poetic musings such as these:

Oh well, at least we should have another comedic ceremony when Rummy gets his Medal of Freedom.

Yea, but The Shrub appointed Robert Gates, former CIA Head, to succeed Rumsfeld.

Methinks "different day, same sh*t", but i do hope for improvement.

Woohoo!

All I need now are the results from Montana and Virginia.

I can only hope for some degree of oversight with the War now.

Hi Pink....

One of the worst things about this administration from a personnel standpoint is, none of the personnel is held to any standard of accountability.

If my memory serves me correctly, isn't Michael Brown, the guy from FEMA, the only cabinet level official to ever be fired in the last six years?

Look at all the blunders.....Why don't they FIRE people anymore when they do a terrible job? Why are they allowed to hang on.....hang around forever until the press and critics finally beat the hell out of them enough that they finally resign? What is wrong with coming right out of the gate the old-fashioned way and firing someone at this level? Surely it's not because they have any chance of prevailing in wrongful termination suit.

Wasn't "faulty intelligence" about WMD that got us into the war? So put IT IN CHARGE???!!!!

I just finished watching Bush's press conference.  When asked if he knew Rumsfeld was going to be stepping down, he said no..but he did interview his replacement at the Crawford ranch... but he didn't know Rummy was going to go...yeah.. un-huh....

Damn..I do wish those squealing piggies would hold it down now!!!.

But then they would hear their well deserved Hee-HAWS! of the winners.

No. I think the first was Paul O'Neil (sp?), former CEO of Alcoa; I think he was Treasury Secretary or whatever Robert Rubin did for Clinton. He made the mistake of having a mind of his own and I think he basically said that some of Bush's economic policies were idiotic.

As for Brownie, I doubt he was cabinet level because he reported to Chertoff.

Bear in mind Robert Gates must be confirmed, following his proposed appointment.  Methinks W/we should review his record and if not satisfactory, email O/our Congresspeople.

i can't speak for the feds -- apart from my (mostly disappointing) dealings with them -- but here are some pearls of wisdom from my tenure in state government in Florida:

1.  Appoint only close, loyal friends as Agency Heads and other well-paid positions.  Loyalty is best tested by perjury before a grand jury, but a history of shredding public documents and other malfeasance in service of the appointer is also reassuring.

2.  Competence in any appointee is unnecessary and probably counter-productive.  Appointees need only learn the list of contributors, as well as the blacklist.

3.  Promote any lazy, good-for-nothing state employee so the poor manager can get rid of them.

4.  Fire any state employee who showed loyalty to one's predessor, and the more loyal they were, the faster they should be fired.  Civil service and Unions be damned.

5.  Productivity is of no value and in fact may be contrary to the interests of the appointer or his or her contributors.

6.  Pass vague and contradictory legislation to appease one's contributors, particularly attorneys.

7.  Anyone -- and i mean anyone -- who speaks to the press in a manner embarrassing to the appointer must be immediately disciplined and/or fired.  Those who committed perjury on behalf of the appointer are just disciplined.

8.  Campaign ads should be negative, contain nonsensical sound bites and/or be used to purchase a hunting lodge.  Debts accrued during a campaign, whether successful or not, are always waived.

I am a pure King George hater and proud of it and have been before he was even ever elected. I do want to give him some credit with the Rumsfeld thing. He could have done it before the election for the political benefit but he chose afterwards.

Now I do not think this was noble at all. The only reason Rummy is out of a job is Bush needed to do this to show he is still the one in charge and could not wait until the Dems made it a HUGE issue and there is also the timing of it to try to take the spotlight off the Dems from last night.

But still time after time Bush has chosen to maxamize political gain over anything else and it seems this time he did not.

Arrogance was the reason, I think.

Be careful what you wish for Ranger.  If Cheney leaves, that gives Bush the opportunity to appoint a replacement who WOULD want to run in '08 and would have all the advantages of the Vice-Presidency in his campaign.

I think the only reason he resigned is to avoid having to testify before a congressional subcommittee.  I wouldnt be surprised if the next announcements are his plans to retire to Jamaica.

I expect most of Monkeyboy's cabinet and top officers will resign in the next few weeks to avoid the same thing, and Monkeyboy will be going through pens right and left issuing pardons.

I am not sure about Shotgun resigning.  How many of the top level Presidential people have to go before Nancy Pelosi is given the job as speaker of the house
because there is nobody above her?

Just me, etc.

Hate to say this, WyrdRich, but any association to Monkeyboy or his administration at this point would be an extreme negative for the Republican candidate in '08.

Additionally, Monkeyboy is not bright enough to appoint somebody that his party will like.  It would be somebody widely reviled like DeLay or Ashcroft.

Somebody has to run, this is true, but I imagine it will be somebody like the Postmaster of West Podunk, Montana, who is low enough on the food chain to not be splattered by the Monkeyboy administration crap-bomb.

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

WyrdRich -> RE: Rumsfield is stepping down! (11/8/2006 4:49:28 PM)

I wouldn't be so sure Sinergy.  The President was certainly poison during this election but the Republicans immediately adopted a tone of contrition, and the Rumsfeld resignation is an act of the same.  The tv is on behind me and I just heard Bush accepting responsibility for the outcome of the election.  That appeals to swing voters.

Consider our recent experience in California.  Arnold's special election was a tremendous rebuke and his poll numbers were in the toilet.  Instead of throwing a political pout, he took responsibility, adopted a new approach and I'm told his margin of victory was 2-1.

The great middle is fickle.  The Dems have regained enough power to blow it badly.  "Tax cuts for the rich" was a nifty slogan but I suspect my paychecks will get smaller courtesy of the Honorable Mr. Rangel and Ms. Pelosi.  What if they launch massive investigations and another attack occurs in the midst of them?  Having power means they can be blamed.  Chimps can make faces to draw sympathy too, you know.

I dunno, I'm working the kind of hours that make union men whimper and put hippies in the hospital.  Wouldn't swear I'm hitting on all cylinders.

MasterKalif -> RE: Rumsfield is stepping down! (11/8/2006 4:50:22 PM)

Thankgod the fool Rumsfeld is gone....Bush should have kicked this guy out a long time ago....I will never forget how after the shameful looting of the Baghdad Museum ocurred while US forces looked the other way (a big mistake in my opinion, not just because of the looting of a priceless museum, but also because it showed weakness of US forces), and Rumsfeld in a press conference justified the looting saying that Iraqis were a free people and could do what they wanted......so if that is the case I would ask Mr. Rumsfeld, as a free person in a free country like the US, would he like it if I and a crowd overran the AirSpace Museum in Washington DC and looted it????? of course not....this guy is a moron, please excuse my language.

We are talking about a man who in 1981 praises Saddam Hussein, goes to Iraq and meets with him, and then in 2003 he is saying he is the "worst, most evil" dictator in human kind....so then where are his morals? why isn't he being held accountable for his change? that is political convinience to the extreme....this guy has no shame.
