Here's how it works...

Answer the lyrical question of the post above you, then post your own.

In the Eagles song "Hotel California" there was a line that went "They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast".
What was the beast?

Lol....while she may have been one I don't think it was the beast they were referring to.

I got weak and wikied it, but I won't tell....

mistoferin -> RE: Musical references (11/9/2006 11:28:19 AM)

Ok well....

There are actually several different theories on "the beast".

Two of them are in reference to Steely Dan who had made mention of the Eagles in a song the year before they released Hotel California. One thought was that they were good friends and they were returning the favor....the other was that they were enemies and that they were taking a stab at him.

There are also some who feel the song and the line in it are occult references.

The theory though that is most popular and makes the most sense....and has been at least alluded to by band members, is the theory that the line is in reference to drug culture and addiction. Drug references can be found throughout the song. One band member said that at the time they released the album the band was living a life of excess and the song was a warning to others of the pitfalls of such a life. The line is said to be a reference to razor blades chopping cocaine...the beast being the drug and the addiction that follows.

So...let's try another. Forever ago, Olivia Newton John sang a song called "Please Mister, Please". In it she made a reference to "B17". What was "B17"?
