ScooterTrash -> Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 5:40:23 PM)

It was surprising to see how many referendums were on the ballot this time, to tally up the votes on what could be banned (Abortion, stem cell research, smoking in public places, same sex marriage, etc.). It seems there is entirely too much concern these days over restricting behavior, than dealing with programs that would benefit people. Doesn't it seem that this is starting to be the trend, to see what can restricted, rather than what can be offered? I just wonder how long it will be before communication is banned? I'm certain someone is contemplating the thought that sharing ideas is detrimental to our society ...hmmm.

Well now that the neocon fundies don't rule all three branches anymore,  perhaps we won't be seeing so much of the "banning for your own good" shite laws trying to be passed.

Yes I said all three branchs.  I view the Supreme Court Justices that Shrubbie McFuckstick the Smirking Chimp appointed as placing the Supreme Court in the hands of the neocons.  At least now,  one branch isn't automatically going to side with the WE'RE-LIVING-IN-THE-END-DAYS-SO-WE-CAN-FUCK-THE-PLANET-ANYWAY-WE-SEE-FIT party.

I know what you mean, Scooter, but partly it's inevitable, because, under our Constitution, anything that isn't explicitly banned has to be recognized as implicitly permissible.

i am told the American Patriot Act gives the FBI the authority to request A/anyone's library records without a search warrant.  i am also told libraries fought hard to keep the computers they make available to patrons from being agents of governmental censor or spying.  i am told Google recently fought off an attempt to make it's records available to law enforcement.

i cannot help but remember the book "Farenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury; the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell and Russell Baker; etc.

W/we probably need a resurgence of some elements of the Anarchists Movement of the 1800's.  A bibliography of relevant materials is found at:

I recall a Democratic congress banning machine guns in 1986, and "semi-automatic assault weapons" (including any magazine for any gun that had more than 10 rounds) in 1994, despite the fact these items are constitutionally protected under the Second Amendment of our Bill of Rights. Funny how that never comes up when the general restrictions bashing comes up. Talk about "banning for our own good". By all means, bitch about the loss of your freedoms. You should. But don't stand there calling the kettle black when you stand there among the pots.

Nah.  It will just be different shit that gets banned to protect us.  Which is worse, a fundy telling me what I can do in the bedroom, or a vegan telling me what I can have in the kitchen?

Vegans don't tell you what you can eat in your kitchen.  They (want to) tell corporations what harmful additives they can't put into the food they sell just to save a buck.  I think that's a crucial difference--one that clever right-wing rhetoric always tries to obscure.

This is at my core, acceptable, but who am I to say that women are unable to put ground beetles on their lips to present themselves as more  alluring than another?

I am some distraught thatlife is now polarizing into an adverserial ideal in american life........

Yeah, I know whatcher saying.  That's why I'd tackle trans fats first, and deal with the beetles after all the easier issues have been taken care of.

WyrdRich -> RE: Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 7:12:59 PM)

Gotta disagree LaM.  Control is control.  Did the Moral Majority conduct raids on people's bedside tables in their anti-porn campaign or did they target 7-11?  Hustler readers, or Larry Flynt?

The new batch of controllers will do things exactly the same way.

I dunno.  Might just be the fatigue talking.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 7:15:39 PM)

People like me support the anti-transfat movement, and when they start infringing on other people's civil rights, people like me stop supporting them.  That's why I don't think the anti-transfat movement is ever going to start infringing on people's civil rights.

mnottertail -> RE: Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 7:44:49 PM)

Well, you seem a little leftist there, because the issues have only recently come into the notion of trans-fatty acids, but have always been about states rights, and the difference in philosophy between the people who (as we set our constitution on) say the states have the right to discern what is best for them, and government should not rule the people, but the people should rule, some dickweeds call this democracy, and the others who say that there must be an oversight and management of the states, loosely confederated, so that there is an arbiter between the vwants of the few and the wants of the many, and we call these cocksuckers, republican.............

And there is no doubt that in this all-encompassing system,. the government can handle a couple communist senators, or representatives, or hell; even apresiden like that, so long as they are american born (what a concept),

So, to summarize, the conservative party, in power for the  the last few years, have been forced into a fight against the terrorists, because the democrats have been unawares, and have been busy getting there dick sucked when they should have been paying attention to the nations business, and the republicans, the defenders of the faith, have been cornholing in the closet in the dark and can now see very clearly in the garish light of day, thier past recalcitrance and misguided deeds, and now, dropping a stupid war into the democratic lap, can say, if you don't back the new secretary of defense you are a fag, cause we now wanna get along, dawg..........throw your caution to the wind, ......

Ah, nevertheless, we rally have alotta resource to fuck away, but we been buying on credit, and I ain't so much worried that japan could walk in here, and buy up the country, which they could, by the way, because we could sell them rockefeller center and the World Trade towers, again (ohhhhhhhh, maybe not) and they would have to sell it back to us, because they don't understand american thinking)

You are not going to read this far for the most part, so:

I said some time ago, why fret at all about korea?  The chinese will do what is in their best interest when they feel it is in their best interest....

A small note in world events you better pay close attention to,

the Madass insane uncontrollable loose cannon guy who is euphamistically known as Kim Il Jung, was visited by a delegation of chinese one Fuckin' time........after our many hours off retting about what we gonna do about the madman?  They are back at the negotioating table................

maybe another rant another day,

Ron

Lordandmaster -> RE: Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 7:50:26 PM)

Well, yeah, but that was our Korea strategy from the get-go.  That was obvious.  I've never seen Bolton use such conciliatory rhetoric--I was amazed he didn't spontaneously combust or something.

We fuck things up in a lot of places, but maybe the last region on earth where we still enjoy some international respect is East Asia--because we've actually done a few things right since Vietnam.

mnottertail -> RE: Are we becoming a banned society? (11/9/2006 8:09:32 PM)

Well, lets just give that a run, shall we?  We gotta look a little rude to the chinese waltzin into iran and iraq, for democratic reasons, yes or no?  I mean, if one takes a calm look at the world we better start dealing with the chinks instead of the towel heads, don't cha think (that little tough retoric was for all you 'patriots').........this is where the greatest nation on earth faces the only nation on earth, and either some must die or some must find a way to live in the only globe we can inhabit, now, don't get me wrong, I am not looking at china as an adversery, I think they have people that want to drink water, have people tthat want a better life for their offspring and so on, they are a world power, and the one we ultimately have to deal with, and we should find out how we are going to inhabit this world, right quick, because it don't look like we are gonna get to alpha centauri before we gotta have dealings with these slopeheads..........

So, what shall our future be?  Shall we sit down and reason together or shall we police the world and keep it free of terrorists, or shall we consider that we may be part and parcel of the problem, enforcing our ideals on an otherwise disinterested globe, and look to our own (and in my mind) real interests which, will at some point be the legacy to us and our posterity, or should we just pay 5 bucks and  get a blowjob and forget our heritage (If I could see a way  clear to do both, I am willing to sacrifice, fyi)

Yes!  Exactly!  It seems that it's much easier for politicians to say, "Let's do away with this semi-unpopular idea," than to actually do anything that involves real work that benefits others.

Edited because I couldn't get my quotation marks in the right place.
