What just might happen is that one of these committees might "discover" some previously hidden shocking truth, one that will goddamn COMPEL the House to begin impeachment proceedings.

Now and then you find a Democrat with a strategic head on his shoulders too.

What they are doing, is restarting all the investigative committees the Republicans had closed down, shining light on all the things the Bushies had wanted tucked away. I think that's exactly the right approach.

I don't really care if Bush is impeached or not. What I DO care about is rolling back all the policies that he implemented that have done major harm to the US.  #1: ban torture. #2 reinstate the legal right of hebeus corpus to all terror suspects. #3 dismantle the black prisons. #4 severely limit the use of phone and computer tapping on Americans. #5 roll back the tax cuts on the top 2% income earners. #6 get the troops the fucking equipment they need!  I want to be proud of this country again. Bush has made it into some dark, fearful, paranoid nation out of "V for Vendetta." Time to put things right...er...center... again.

I don't agree with #2 - I don't think terrorists have any rights, I believe them to be sub-human (I've thought this for 20+ years), they our cowards and they shouldn't be given the same rights as people from our country.

They kill innocent women and children and then say "it's God's will" - it's horse crap - they deserve slow and painful death.

ToGiveDivine:
This is kinda tricky when we  lump terrorist who kill women and children with those who don't.
Our own founders were accused by the British of terrorism, and not without cause.  We call the Iraquies who contest the US pressence in their country terrorist.  What the current administration has refused to do so far is to define terrorism.  The reason is that any definition of terrorism that was broad enough to include all those at the Gitmo Gulag would also include the US and its alllies.
The murder of non combatents happens all the time and not by accident..."The Heros of Telemark" is one example that many are aware of.  I am not trying to justify the murder of non combatants I am only pointing out that it happens and we must be very careful about letting our emotions overcome the rule of law.

If the U.S. were a corporation and Bush were it's CEO it would have been bankrupted long ago!

...firstly as MC has pointed out, until there is a fair trial with evidence tested then to accuse someone of being a terrorist is as bad as assuming all people accused of being rapists are rapists. Incidentally, you say people from 'our' country......this is accurate, as under the recent legislation signed into law by Bush, then foreigners can be executed on hearsay evidence......something no American would accept as being reasonable for US citizens. Finally, if killing innocent women and children is derserving of death and slow torture i look forward to you calling for the architects of operation shock and awe, and all IDF personnel who helped bomb Lebanon, to be boiled slowly in oil.

That was the first paragraph of his resume, that he had some experience in bankrupting things and ostensibly this is what carried him thru two elections, so the american people have spoken, what the fuck you gonna do?

I think it's the right call on Pelosi's part. Nothing would make me happier than to see Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld in prison for the rest of their lives, and I thoroughly believe they deserve it.

However, for the past twelve years the Republicans have done their best to turn Congress into a partisan hellhole. As much as I hate to say it, it would do the country better if the Democrats showed they were interested more in bipartisanship than vengeance.

What they are doing, is restarting all the investigative committees the Republicans had closed down, shining light on all the things the Bushies had wanted tucked away. I think that's exactly the right approach.

Hello A/all,

I tend to agree with this being a good call on Pelosi's part.  If she goes after Monkeyboy and his cronies with a huge battleaxe, odds are fairly good they will get defensive and stock in companies that make shredders will soar.

On the other hand, if both sides go to work together uncovering everything, it says a lot about the way government is supposed to work.  We can uncover stuff.  Figure out who lied or did whatever to who.  And most importantly, it will be a shining example to everybody of how not to have a Presidential administration.  We might get new laws written to prevent some of the more egregious illegalities.  New oversight powers assumed by Congress.

While it would make me giddy to see Bush et al get sent for a few years to Gitmo, I am more interested in preventing it from every happening again than I am interested in revenge.

And I do need to remind people that items taken off the table can also be put back on the table...

Just me, etc.

I have not read the whole thread, so if this has already been posted, I apologize.

First off, let me say as a Canadian, I have no direct stake in this issue.

However, I wonder...would the pro-impeachment folks prefer Cheney?

I think it would be wasting time trying to impeach Bush.  The Senate and Congress Elect should focus on more important stuff, such as affordable health care, return to progressive taxation, educating our youth, lobbying and campaign reform.  I do not suggest that we should let everything go as water undert he bridge rather we should understand what has transpired and put clear legislation in place to better enforce the check and balances and oversight.  -Joe

This may seem a bit negative.

But I say we should let Monkeyboy keep his job.

There has not been a Republican president working this hard to completely destroy the credibility of the party since Nixon.

Plus he makes so many nonsensical statements, idiotic aphorisms, and malaproprisms every time his pie-hole opens that he is keeping comedians employed planet-wide.
