Well, the author of the original book is L. Frank Baum, and if he is the same Frank Baum that played the Wizard in the movie, it could have been his own coat!

Terry (III)

Mini biography

Without question, the most known dog in movie history. Many dogs tried to eclipse Toto's success, most recently, The Men In Black dog. Most don't know that Toto has an autobiography that's available in most stores. She almost lost her life when she broke her foot in The Wizard of Oz. Toto (Terry) appeared in over 10 Hollywood films. The industry took a big blow when she died.

Wizard- Frank BaumĀ  (I think)

I'm pretty sure L. Frank Baum was the author of the Wizard of Oz books. Not sure if he was still around when the movie was made.

I know that in the original story, the slippers were silver and not ruby and I know it was a political satire for the times in which it was written.
The yellow brick road was in reference to the old myth of America that the roads were paved with gold.
The Lion represented the Military.
The Tinman represented the industrial part of America.
The Scarecrow represented the Agriculture.
The Wizard was the President.
No idea what the Wicked Witch represented.

The slippers were silver, because Baum believed that "free silver" (basing our money on silver as well as gold) would, by increasing the money supply, benefit poor people. And Oz is the abbreviation for "ounce." There was much discussion in the late 1800s about coining (I think) 16 ounces of silver for every ounce of gold.

The wicked with of the East represented Wall Street; her western sister represented banks that foreclosed on farmers.

There's a great sidebar on this in America's History by Henretta et al. The book's at work, though, so you're spared further detail!

The Wizard of Oz was played by Frank Morgan, not L. Frank Baum.

Well, I guess I am an idiot, so I decided to ask a question and see if I am all alone.  lol

Master and I were talking about the Wizard of Oz, and being the trivia buff that He is, ( and I am not obviously), He asked me who the main character was, as well as who played all the other leading roles.  I knew that Dorothy was played by Liza Minnelli's (sp) mother, but could not think of her name.   I now know it was Judy Garland.

But... who played the tin man, the lion, the scarecrow and the Wizard?    Also I was asked what year the movie was made, and who first played the tin man, and why he couldn't  continue?    ( I did know this one... sort of)  lol.

I had no clue about these questions.... do you know?
And NO looking on the internet!!

~aurora~

(The thing I don't understand is...how come Pink Floyd is never mentioned in any of the original credits?)

ROFLMAO

My sister bought a house in Phoenix.  My niece was 5 at the time.   Next door was an 80+ yr old lady that had been one of the munchkins.   My niece ran in the house all excited because they had a little girl for her to play with next door.
