Status: offline 		Well, I guess I am an idiot, so I decided to ask a question and see if I am all alone.  lol
 
Master and I were talking about the Wizard of Oz, and being the trivia buff that He is, ( and I am not obviously), He asked me who the main character was, as well as who played all the other leading roles.  I knew that Dorothy was played by Liza Minnelli's (sp) mother, but could not think of her name.   I now know it was Judy Garland. 
 
But... who played the tin man, the lion, the scarecrow and the Wizard?    Also I was asked what year the movie was made, and who first played the tin man, and why he couldn't  continue?    ( I did know this one... sort of)  lol.   
 
I had no clue about these questions.... do you know?  
And NO looking on the internet!!

Status: offline 		I know none of the answers here, except that the original tin man had to step out due to him being incontinent. I could be wrong on that one, too.

actually Buddy Ebson did first start out playing the tin man, and couldn't continue because.... wait let me ask Master...lol.. he inhaled the aluminum powder that was used in the makup on his face, and he almost died...  either he was allergic to it, or it just made him really sick... not sure. 
 
( Master said.... what you don't know?!?)    ekkkkk!

Status: offline 		I knew Burt Lahr and Buddy Ebsen (for the first tin man) and of course Judy Garland.  Couldn't have told you the others.

I THINK it was released in 1939

I think the original tin man was allergic to the body paint.
And those monkeys are just talented.

Status: offline 		I know that in the original story, the slippers were silver and not ruby and I know it was a political satire for the times in which it was written.

The yellow brick road was in reference to the old myth of America that the roads were paved with gold.
The Lion represented the Military.
The Tinman represented the industrial part of America.
The Scarecrow represented the Agriculture.
The Wizard was the President.
No idea what the Wicked Witch represented.

I know the coat worn by the Wizard in the movie was a coat that was originally owned by the author of the original book and it was pure coincidence that they used it in the film.

Status: offline 		Billie Burke played Glinda the Good Witch.  Toto played himself.  Not sure who played the Twister.  The Munchkins were actually played by real midgets (or little people as we call them today), not children.  I heard they drank a lot, and were rather not-so-well behaved during shooting.  I don't have documentation of that, however.

Well, the author of the original book is L. Frank Baum, and if he is the same Frank Baum that played the Wizard in the movie, it could have been his own coat!
