Handfastings are a beautiful thing, and depending on the couple can have diffrent levels of intensity. The traditional way that Great Britian, especially Scotland, actually still upheld once christianity came was the year and day. At some point, i am not sure when, even this ritual was ignored in the Catholic church. This was a marriage legally binding for a year and day, and at that time all parties would come back and see where they stand in the relationship. At that point if the couple still felt they should marry for life they would. If though they found that the marriage would not work, they asked for blessings of the seperation from all parties, and went their seperate ways. Since it no longer is a legal act, handfastings can be official the first time by actually getting married and then have the year and a day be the reconfermation of what has already been promiced, or it can be a trail of year and a day. There is alot of spiritual parts to this that make it special. Edited to make sure it was more accurate.
