Hiya mnottertail Well with ASL (I have no idea why this happens) it depends on the state you live in, some uses two hands and other states use one hand (very confusing), there is a universal sign language which I am curious about, but to be honest I only do BSL but I'm stronger in SSE (Sign Supported English) alot of signs are universal as they invovle simple signs, I mean I bet you do them all the time, if your with your friends and it's noisey and you want to know if they want a drink, you mime drinking with an imginary glass/bottle etc.. that is sign. People who don't know sign try to "over" sign, keep them simple and easly understood. If you were really curious try ASL for the state your in, if you have problems, do ask I know a fair few places and I don't mind helping out. Sometimes looking at sign in it's purest form can be daunting so start easy, combine it with clear speech, but don't taaallllkkkk llliiikkkeeeeee tthhiiissssss, thats very annoying for a lipreader. The context in sign is simliar to french or german, but there to My knowelge is not like "Female chair" as in french. BSL for example cuts out alot of useless words like "the", that word simply does not exist in sign. Another example being "Whats your name"? you use tone and subtle change in tone to indicate a question, in sign (I'm using British here) it goes "My name. What"? Then you fingerspell your name then your signname if you have one. People often make the mistake that a signer can read/understand written english, this isn't the case they are not strictly speaking "english" but a context of it, hence the problems with education as alot of educational things are written in spoken hearing english, the way around it is to try and learn it, I still have problems with My writings at time what makes sense to Me is bad grammer or english to another, and more then often I speak in sign which is confusing to others. Hope that helps? I don't mind helping I'm a proud deaf bloke and equally proud of the Deaf communitys language. WoS P.S on a side note Signlanguage is only about 500 odd years old, compared to the thousands of years of evoling (or unevoling :P) spoken english.
