There's about 9 katrillion pre-made websites...all you have to do is pay for them...they'll do all the work.

(Here's a thought:  Try searching for "adult web sites" on the world wide web....amazing things will happen when you do).

wish there were free alternatives...but those sites are so limited on functionality and form

(I know...it's damn silly, all that paying for shit stuff going around).

I am a web designer and looking to break into making adult websites (specifically from a BDSM perspective) and to do so need a portfolio of course, therefore I am looking to do a few websites for free (the design, but you still need to buy a domain name and hosting at around £40/year which isn't bad!) in order to fill my portfolio. If anyone is interested then drop me an email.

Since you will be investing a lot of yourself in any  Domme endeavor one option is to do it yourself.
There are some very easy programs that make fairly great web pages.  They may not have all the bells and whistles - like flash movies or some special effects but programs like FrontPage are realy simple to use and can do anything you will find on 99% of web pages.  FrontPage costs about $100.00 but after you make a few pages with it you will be able to do it yourself from now on.
Since these programs emply a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you  get) philosophy all you need do is type in the text and drop the graphics and when it looks like you want hit a button and walla - the page you made is converted to html code - which is what web browsers like Internet Explorer read.
A little up the price and capablilities scales are programs like Macromedia's Dreamweaver ( also a fantastic song).  It's a little harder to use, does a little more and costs a bit more too.  If you realy want to get to be a professional web designer or emulate what they do anyway - Photoshop and Flash are what you might eventualy want to use.
But the simple fact of the matter is -  great sites don't need more than text and graphics to convey your personna and sizzle.  That's all you realy need and FrontPage and simialar programs can supply that.
If you want to make your page look like others then a weekend with a book from the library on rudiments of web design might be a good notion.   There you will learn to worry about what pages should link to other pages and simialar arcane stuff.  But it's you that is being conveyed on that page so if it's your labor of love then your vision is more likely to be expressed well.  It may be a few weekends well spent and let you create for a long number of years.

I'd suggest picking up a program like Dreamweaver and just do it that way. There's another good program I used when I first started learning html, and that was Hotdog, made by the people from www.sausage.com. Couldn't tell you if they're still in business these days.

What I DON'T recommend is finding a submissive to do your site for you. Almost always that works out badly. Sure, 2% of the time it might work out okay, but it tends to be more a problem than anything else.

Some years back, when people didn't know how to make web sites, and there weren't programs for doing it yourself, I used to create a whole bunch of sites for pro dommes. I was probably one of the only few that did it for a cash payment and didn't ask for "play" in return. It was obvious why the clients would continue coming back to me. You'd be surprised at the games people play when it comes to the pay for play crowd. These days, however, I have only one client I maintain, and that's for a bdsm book company. I just don't have the time to do it anymore, and I got really tired of "competing" with the do it yourselfers who make really crappy sites. I considered myself an artist when it came to web sites, and after awhile, that sort of expertise went the way of the dodo.

Id defiantely suggest dreamweaver.  I do a bit of web design as a side job and thats my tool of choice if I am not writing the HTML by hand.  It alows you to preview what your trying to do first, whic is a huge help.  It also has enough presets that you dont have to really worry about learning what you are doing, persay, as much as figuring out how to set the parts up.
As for web hosting, I have a few different companies that I have gone through in the past.  If you want, I can see what I can do about a reommendation.  Also, dont forget the registration on search engines and the like once your set up. That make a huge difference.

In addition to the prgrams listed, i have to say that typing HTML directly in Notepad is also an easy way to start.
Of course it won't look as bright as other website made by pro, but You are sure to get exactly what You want.
And HTML is a rather simple language (i designed my website that way, no anyone can !!!)
And if You like something You see on a website, think about looking at the source code, it could give good tips.

dominalisa -> RE: how do i make my own website (11/16/2006 12:14:21 AM)

For beginners, I'd recommend using free online tools/websites like at tripod.com

(you do not need dreamweaver unless you are intermediate to advanced and know how to create websites, do custom graphics with the additional photoshop program or edit some code). I recommend starting with something free like tripod or making a yahoo group.

You say you want to become a pro domme. But I think my main question to you, MistressCJ, is do you have the resources, skills and experience in order to become a pro domme? (dungeon with lots of equipment, expensive outfits, many bdsm toys as well as having taken classes or learned from from others about bdsm techniques and the experience. Also do you have the patience and will to tolerate alot of the losers, fetishists and selfish men (fake subs) out there? also security and screening process for the psychos out there).

I agree that a blog is the easiest and fastest way. Don’t waste your time building a site right now. Start a blog and get the info up, list yourself in various directories.   I offer a monthly series, for free called “Becoming a Dominatrix” which serves both lifestyle and pro. You will definitely learn some things and if you ask questions I can help you with marketing, etc.

You can still register a domain and select domain forwarding to your blog. Once you get better set-up have someone install Word Press or something like it, design it and then with that you can update areas easier without knowing html.
