Spitfire...i was in an offshoot of real estate...storage...great industry, great product...build it, pay for it...collect $$ at prices /sqft that you wouldn't get on any residencial or commercial space in north america besides maybe manhatten and a few others.  it's a new enough industry that companies are still small enough that if you're really good at what you do, you can get up there pretty quickly.

the reason that you're so aggressive in your job if you're going door to door, is because you HAVE to be.  don't feel you need to take any flac for that.  but i don't know how long you'll be able to keep that up.  it's a high stress job with little pay back.  if you're good at selling people (i'm one of those too, i can sell ice to eskimos) then there are jobs that are less demanding, pay more, and might give you more job satisfaction.  selling is good in that if you're passionate about the product and really believe in it and can sell reasonably, you'll probably get hired.

but if you like what you do, by all means...keep going.  just don't get suckered into one of those scams where you go door to door, then become a leader, and then a manager, gradually doing less selling, and more hiring of sellers and then if you're REALLY good you'll open your own office and business!  wow...look at that guy, he did it and he's 24!  owns this car and goes here and here.....no matter how great it sounds, it's a scam.  i suppose there is money to be made, but you have to be pretty ruthless to do it.

I'm good at what I do and have done sales for quite sometime. I agree being aggressive is part of the job, and I am quite aggressive for a woman. So yes I agree I shouldn't get flack for that. I'm in a reputable business with stablitity and I can probably get pretty much any job once I'm done working with this company. So things are well in that department but I agree many are ruthless to get to the top. I am competitive but I keep my integrity and morals in tact. Thanks for the advice. You seem to know the business world well. Would love to hear any other input you may have in other facets.

Brandy11, the Mexicans and other illegal immigrants take lousy jobs...like working at MickeyD's, janitors, helpers, assistants....these are not hardcore jobs that require much training/certification....obviously there are exceptions to this rule, but these are immigrants who are here legally and have a right to work here.

Spitfiregrrl, I give you a lot of credit...I once was about to get into sales, until I realized how much I disliked it, having to go door to door...now what you are doing sounds much better, more like business to business sales, which are more fun/professional I would think. I personally prefer to work in Human Resources, have my own office and take it from there and then move into management hopefully.

Can I ask if you have actually worked out concrete goals for yourself.  You have mentioned wanting to do something with your life and get your own business or get a management positon, what do these things actually mean and how will you know when you have achieved these goals?  I used to set myself goals that I could never achieve as I didn't actually have a way to measure them eg. I wanted to succeed at work however I didn't define what 'succeed' mean't for me.  I am sure someone on here will be able to better explain the SMART system for goal setting (there are other goal setting acronyms also, this just came to mind) -
S -specific
M - measureable
A - achievable
R - realistic
T - timeframe

An example for myself, instead of wanting to be better at my job I set myself targets ...I wanted to have done  X assessments in the next year, I was able to measure this by looking at my case numbers on a monthly basis and made sure that the target was realistic whilst also pushing myself that little bit extra.

The other thing  I find helpful for myself is to not beat myself up so much, I find that if I have a goood work/life balance then I actually perform better at work. I have become much more effective at my job since I had an enforced break due to illness which made me reassess my life, I now walk out of the office (most of the time) when I am meant to, I do fun things, I spend time with the people who are important to me and best of all, I go back into work on a monday with a smile on my face and an excitement about the week ahead.

I wish you all the best, remember - be kind to yourself!

Hello Spitfiregrrl: People who do succeed in the competitive work world usually
do have a fire inside. That need to win. Drive.

Clearly you do. I took a quick look at your profile and see you are in your mid twenties. Well.. you are supposed to try hard to gain a good life for yourself!

Just please heed some of the worldly advice from those above us.
Yes, love yourself, be gentle. Find that balance.

I sound like a women's magazine, but really, you are a whole person with a long life ahead. Please take a little bit for yourself - laugh, see friends, take that proverbial bubble bath. Live... or you may regret it

Take it easy ;)
best to you, fawne

I get my frustrations out best in writing. So I apologize in advance if I offend anyone. I am an overachiever, type A, perfectionist all in one. I have worked my butt off in every endeavor and excelled at everything I have done especially my jobs. If I fail in anyway or falter I beat myself up. I am in a new job now where the pressure is on... the competition is high. I have some people I work with that are either intimidated by me or want to make me trip up in some way to make them look good. So I have to step up the game. It just pisses me off that I have this desire to always be the best is it even worth it to let people piss me off and fuel my desire to kick their royal asses? I want to succeed in this job I want to eventually move up to own my own business or be in a management position work up in the corporate world. I want to do something with my life. So there is much pressure on my plate. I feel like I'm losing my game. Anyways this is totally random. Is anyone else like this or am I just a rare breed. How do I regain my cool and reach to the top without beating myself up?

In my way of thinking a person can only have one goal in relation to any particular endeavour, like work. If your goal is to own your own business, does it really matter, if you are the top super duper excellent work yourself death for a 10% raise employee of the month. I'd think not because as soon as you open your own business no one will even care. If your goal is really to open your own business, the sole focus should be on learning the business you are wanting to open inside and out, nothing more, so if selling a little less and taking a course in accounting would help well do that, or transfer to a portion of the company you know little about that would help you in your real goal.

Worrying about others when they really don't matter to where you going long term will just slow you down, and redirect your energy to places it really probably would be better put elsewhere.

But that is all contingent on knowing what your goal is. You say either corporate manager or business owner. Those are to completely seperate goals that entail doing different things to get their.

Old Indian saying "If you chase two rabbits you will lose them both". Clearly defined goals are IMHO the most important aspect.
