I second that...and agree about the comments regarding folks who only eat pre-packaged foods grown by others. I've harvested chickens and rabbits...as well as much of my own vegetables, etc. I think we live closer to the earth when we do so, which (in my mind) develops a fine educatoin and responsibility for the world in which we live. Hunting deer is necessary in most States. In Wisconsin there are way to many deer. 30,000 deer are involved in car crashes each year here.

BTW I also use the "I take personal responsibility for the death of the deer I eat instead of hireing an assasin to do the killing for me." argument. I hunt because it keeps me honest about the facts of life, that in order for me to live something else dies. Seperation from the killing doesn't make one noble, it takes them away from the natural order.

you are so right Bearlee. I wonder how many people would ever eat a chicken sandwhich if they saw how that chicken had suffered. I have the biggest "beef" with the cow industry. But to get back to the thread..We are the natural predaters of deer. Coy dogs can only bring down the disabled or very young. There was an old buck that had been born here on my land.. he always came and bedded down in a gully every night. He slept alone for the last three years. When I went away for a few weeks this summer someone shot him. It really angered me because at best he would have been stew meat..so somebody killed him for what? His rack? Target practise? He was so old he looked like a pinto horse with whit/grey patches. He always ate with my horses..he was not going to starve ever. I am for hunting 100 percent..but I hate trespassers with a passion.

yepper Sir, best turkey I ever ate was a wild one I cleaned myself. There is something very spiritual about field dressing a deer. Pulling the skin off while it is still warm..puts you in touch with nature like nothing else can It humbles me. I know there are people reading this right now thinking "ewwwww" or worse that I am deranged.. but I respect life more because I have seen so much death, No I dont pull the trigger. Not my job. And feeling my place in this world is a comfort.. Hey.A duck was killed here a few weeks back.. I can afford to go out and buy duck. But when a mishap takes a life on my farm..I dont waste it. And that was the best duck I ever had.

Then you have to take into consideration medical care for the injured and costs due to lost work. I have a great love for animals and nature. When I take the life of an animal it has a profound impact on me. It is not something that I do casually and it is not something that I take for granted.

Those of us that live in rural areas have learned to stay close to the house during hunting season for this very reason.

No kidding La T; when I lived at my cabin, which was located in a little 'bowl'; several times I heard guys up on the RR tracks shooting OVER MY HOUSE! <sigh> Tresspassing MORONS!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Yup, I used to keep my dog very close to home then, too; even though I lived in a 'gated community'...it was off-grid and in prime hunting territory to all the trespassers around. There outta be a law! Oh, wait... there IS!!!

Yes, my horses have to stay in the paddock up near the house also. I have heard about too many cattle/etc. that somehow looked like a deer. Personally I do not see much similarity but those city boys with too many beers in them and itchy trigger fingers occasionally do.

I once lived in a place that had opening day off of school , it was a holiday. I made sure everyone stayed inside anyone who had to venture outside was dressed in florescent colours. I am not against hunting at all , many people I know lived off the meat that they hunted but opening day bought all the inexperienced people up to the country and put them out there with loaded weapons.

I said nature should be left alone which only goes with your statement of humans causing this problem. We shouldnt be doing that.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...there are just too many of us. And I can't begin to tell you how many people move out here...wayyyyy away from the city to be 'one with nature'; only to decide to kill all the big cats and bears they can find thinking they'll keep their children safe while playing in the woods... <shakes head> beverly

Some of you mofos need to have a week at the packing plant and see how shit really is, and when you decide to come vegetarian, you need to go to the research center and listen to the occiliscopes when they cut the stem on grain. If you live it is a certainty you will die, you are part of the cycle, and you can rail and piss and moan, but your living impinges on everything in the world. (They even made a movie about it, well, that and a war). If people use what they kill, I have no problem with it. But I also eat beef and like leather. Does that make me a barbarian?
