I don't understand why wouldn't one single cable company, in the USA or Canada, agree having Aljazeera-english with there services? ::sigh::

Because the cable company would be accused of supporting terrorist by a certain group of people and lose subscribers. There is really no upside to pick it up.

Well, certain Al-Jazeera reporters used to work for the BBC. They actually spent time in Iraq reporting on the war for the BBC and got fed up with all the lies/misrepresentation from the British media so they went to work elsewhere. It's not in the interests of the British and US establishments that their people hear the truth so the likes of Al-Jazeera are banned. Democracy alive and well in the land/s of the free.

It's certainly a lie to say it is banned in Britain, the last I heard it there were discussions to have it use the BSkyB satelite. The English language channel was launched today so it remains to be seen exactly what is accessible in Britian. You're right though, banned was the wrong choice of word. However, the extent of the freedom of this particular station is open to debate. For my money, I'll be very surprised if they operate free from censorship.

I should be able to get it but I just pay for the basic programmes here and don't watch enough TV to consider paying for more channels. I'd probably watch from time to time it if it was free.

I doubt that Al-Jazeera tv news channel will be transmitted through cable in the United States after Bush himself and the fools in his administration stated that it was a "terrorist" network supporting the likes of Bin Laden....however, now they quote them quite often (CNN, etc)...

I wouldn't mind having it as an optional source of information. There was a good 'behind the scenes' documentary about their coverage of the Iraq invasaion (sorry, don't recall the title). A scene that stuck with me had the News Director chewing out one of his producers. An American from the anti-war crowd was interviewed and the producer was so thrilled to have found an American to speak badly about his country. The News Director was pissed because the guest was an idiot. They also have plenty of stuff that will quickly convince you that the towel/rag/(insert PC term for Arabic headwear here) is traditionally lined with tin-foil. Besides, I'm sure they'll clean up the act a bit, maybe call suicide bombers something other than 'martyrs.'

I'm all for alternative views (and I will be checking in on the now available, as of today, internet/English version) but (see previous), you have to assume that it has a precursor.

Even cable compan's have advertisers to answer to. Finding sponsors for it would be a nightmare. And now fo the completly inappropriate non PC joke Maybe Canon Towels could sponsor them.

I'm guessing it goes out, as most news channels do, live? They've been known to broadcast some pretty unsavoury stuff - beheadings and the like. So, I would guess that would make it a legal nightmare for any cable company to take? I'd be interested to see it as a comparative, but its not a channel I'd choose often; and there's the other problem, as others have mentioned - small audience, low commercial break revenue - if there are any advertisers who would accept the association. E
