 It hit these poor people while they were sleeping. In NC there is no warning sirens for tornadoes. We have a weather radio that alarms when a tornado is coming here so we have some time to take cover. Some children have been crictically injured and their parents could not be joined with them for some time. Most were lifeflighted to the bigger hospitals such as mine because of the seriousness of the injuries. Some people they found 300-400ft from their home.  Last I heard all people sent were reuinted with parents and such. This is on record as the 8th deadliest tornado in N.C, history.
