depends on the mood....

Vampiros Lesbos'"Sexadelic Dance Party" is an absolute favorite, as is anything by Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. Also I like to play to Portishead, The Stooges, The Cramps, old Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rammstein, White Zombie, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Static-X, NIN, Lords of Acid.. the list is longer than imaginable.

That said, I have also played to Bob Dylan, The Band, Tom Waits, Keith Jarrett, Jimi Hendricks, SRV, David Bromberg, Social Distortion, Turbonegro, X, New York Dolls, Howling Wolf, Led Zeppelin, early ACDC... But these are favorites of mine anytime.

best,
Joshua

M. Joshua-

I once, midway through a first scene, realised with horror that I had left 'Bootleg Vol.3' playing on 'repeat' when the date transitioned into 'scene', and that I would definatly blow the flow if I changed it now. she wasn't generaltionally situtated to really know the music, so i was hoping it just wasn't registering-I pressed on...

afterwards, she all fuzzy and drifty, snuggleing into my arms she whipered into my armpit:

"oh that was great- I looove Dylan...."

oooph- instant keeper<g>.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

Lawrence, that's classic! I haven't played to Bootleg V3 I msust say, but Blonde on Blonde can be interesting... Visions of Johanna always makes an impression, you might say. :)

My ex wasn't a big Dylan fan (another of the many red flags we discussed that I should have seen <wink>) but I had turned her on to Tom Waits on our very first date. There is just something primal about listening to Raindogs especially while administering a beating... guess it just makes me smile.

Gawd, I just had a vision of a flogging to John Birch Society Blues... lmao!

Best,
Joshua

This is a GREAT thread. I've really enjoyed it.

For those of you who haven't subscribed to a music service (Real Rhapsody is what I have, but I know there are others out there) it's really great for being able to take a listen to what other's have suggested before laying down the dough for the album.

I actually benefitted greatly recently as I'd expressed in a prior thread I was looking to make a scene CD and was able to download specific tracks and make my own.

Tom Waits as much as I love him, has always been somewhat of an acquired taste for others around me. Nighthawk's At The Diner is on my top 10 list.

Lily (who's currently going through the Dylan discography)

I always love these music threads, of coruse I'm a huge fan of music.

Are you familiar with Girt Wilden's cheesy 60's & 70's German film compositions? I used to have an album called "Schulmadchen Report" which was pretty good, along the lines fo the Vampiros Lesbos CD. Very ambient and sexual. Alas, I jsut checked and it is out of print. I may need to go through my boxes of CDs and try to find it again. That would be worth playing to.

As for Dylan, well ya can't go wrong as far as I'm concerned. The best live Dylan is, IMO, the 1975 Rolling Thunder Review Tour. He's jsut ON!

Also, there is a movie that has been released called "Masked And Anonymous" which stars Dylan as a traveling troubador in a futuristic world enaged in civil War. Its' a bit surreal but is an enjoyable watch. It Costars John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Luke Wilson, jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz and Angela Bassette. Worth a watch :)

best,
Joshua

The Koln Conert is great. Lots of fine piano playing PLUS you get some background moaning and foot stomping!

Indeed. :)

Touretts Syndrome can be a bitch, but it certainly served Keith Jarrett, Thelonious Monk and Michael Wolf (all three brilliant pianists) very well indeed. at least musically ;)

aaaaeehn!!

M.Lily-

I am so surprised I didn't know this- My all time fav is Raindogs, but here's a few tracks on Bone machine that are in heavy rotation on my playlist("the wimmen all control their men with razors and with wrists") and I have been know to work a scene to an all Waits playlist (which it has been reported, left a certain girl with the oddest pavolian response<eg>).

And on the real obsucure side- every heard of the soundtrack to one from the heart? Waits and Crystal Gayle! I had it on vynal, but it is gone, sadly. There is also a great sound track by the Eurythmics for 1984, that is a great scene set, right out of the box.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

Obscura:

Any of the early King Crimson albums or (better still) the 4 CD box set "The Great Deceiver" which contains long tracks of improvised rock. Fripp himself used to describe these improvisations as "lurking" and it's a great descriptor for any dungeon music I like.

Chinese Classical Opera -- if you really want to scare the bejesus out of anybody, play them some Chinese opera. Scares the crap outta me, and I'm not afraid of the dark!

Recommended "ambient" stuff would include just about anything by Philip Glass. His endless repetition is behind this old music joke about him:

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Philip Glass. Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Philip Glass. Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Philip Glass. Knock, knock.

etc.

Frank Zappa -- Lumpy Gravy. It's fairly "out there".

John Zorn -- The Big Gundown (a tribute to the music of Italian film composer, Ennio Morricone) -- a nice blend of "horror" and seductive, 60s cocktail lounge schmaltz.

Thomas Dolby -- Gothic (soundtrack score to the Ken Russell movie of the same name)

Brian Wilson - SMiLE (you SHOULD get this album whether you want to scene with it or not. "Genius" doesn't begin to describe it.)

Lalo Schifrin - The Marquis de Sade. Not quite as interesting as the title might suggest, but moody enough to create a nice, dark atmosphere.

Thanks for reminding me of Enya, MD. Her music always reminds me of Mike Oldfield and in particular his Incantations album of some years back.

Robert Mirabel I'd have to search for.

As for Phantom of the Opera ... hmm ... "tastes" are a strangely individual thing - heh heh heh. Parts of Phantom bear an uncanny resemblence to a piece ("Judas Iscariot) by Rick Wakaman on his album "Criminal Record". Not that Lloyd-Webber stole it or anything. He must have heard it once and the memory of it stuck in his compositional head. Like that Mendelssohn violin sonata that he couldn't get out of his head when he composed "I Don't Know How To Love Him" for Jesus Christ Superstar. </chuckling>

If you look for Robert Mirabal may I suggest starting with the CD ... Music from A Painted Cave. I think probably the best to start with. His music has some similarites of a sort to Enya. I think if someone enjoys her music will also enjoy his. I have found most of the bigger music stores have him there... though the area tends to vary, I have found him under new age more oft then not. *smiles*

I just picked up the Soundtrack to betty Page's DARK ANGEL

consists of primarily two kinds of tracks: The first being the lounge (gotta grab a martini) feel by Zach Ryan contrasted by the haunting bluesy, rock-a- billy, jazzy instrumentals of Danny Harvey. gotta love the titles of some of tehse Harvey tunes: 'Whipping Dance', 'Black Coresette', 'Pony Girl', 'Bound & Gagged', 'Jungle Girl'..

Certainly a seductive ensemble, could be interesting to play to. Not bad to listen to while sitting back with a good cigar either.

Martini Music [two peachy cheeks, spanked, not stirred]

Esquivel - "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" -- the Godfather of kooky lounge music! There's a few albums out there that have been reissued on CD, but this particular one is probably his best. Think of his music as being kinda like an aural representation of fight scenes in Batman and Robin cartoons, complete with lots of KA-POW! and BAM!!! accents.

Peggy Lee -- EMI released a very good compilation of hers a couple of yeas ago that has all her hits (she was best known for the tune "Fever") I particularly like other tracks sych as Sneakin' Up On You and her version of See See Rider.

Mel Torme -- "Goin' Home" -- one of the triumvirate of great popular jazz singers in the late 60s (along with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett), Torme is perhaps the "hippest" of the three and his style tends to groove more than the other two. "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" was his big hit back then, and most collections will include it. The title track (Goin' Home) is an old blues standard and something of a signature tune for bands like Ten Years After.

Herbie Mann -- "Live At The Village Vanguard" -- This album is one that probably got played at more fondue parties in the early 70s than any other. A must-have album if you're wanting to create that lounge mood.

James Last -- "Hair" -- Straight, German trumpeter-meets-hippie soundtrack. A great instrumental album of the time.

Herb Alpert -- "And His Tijuana Brass" -- another very popular trumpeter contemporary of James Last. He had a big hit with "This Guy's In Love (With You)" and compilation albums will always include his kooky Mariachi-band tunes like "Spanish Flea". He's the "A" in A&M Records, for all you musical trivia nuts out there.

"Classical Gas" -- I forget who originally recorded this, but it sticks in my memory as a good tune for pervy scening after I heard it used in the soundtrack of a corny 70s BDSM movie. It was the first real BDSM porn film I ever saw so my liking of it might be more for nostalgic reasons than any other.

There's plenty of others. That's just a small, off-the-top-of-my-head sampling.

Travis T.
