Once before, in a very similar thread, I answered with compatibility.  At that time, I was corrected with the technicality that compatibility is not a trait, but rather a condition taking all the traits combined.

*shrugs*  Regardless... as being compatible is "capable of existing or performing in harmonious, agreeable, or congenial combination with another or others", I still feel it is the single most important thing that anyone can bring to a relationship.

What do you consider to be THE most important character trait that a person can bring to a relationship?

Is it loyalty, love, trust, responsibility, .....what?

AND, why do you consider that to be the most important?

( and no cheating by saying all of the above )

Maturity..with that usually comes all else.

Kalira -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 7:19:06 AM)

It's interesting. When I first thought about this, I had a certain trait in mind that I really believed I would hold above else. And yet, once I actually thought about it, and realized how many there are that I so completly 'rely' upon in a person, I realized that I really could not pick one that would stand in front of the others.

I actually thought about this for 3 days and I am still no closer to understanding why one is more important than the other ( yes, I know, as Master says, why does one have to be more important, they can just be as important )

Then, I read losttreasure's answer and I realized that she hit it on the head perfectly. Compatability. Without that, there would be none of the rest.

Thank you ya'll, I appreciate the contribution to the question.

/scratches head in confusion and goes off to ponder the 'whys' of compatibility.

justheather -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 7:25:50 AM)

So far in our relationship, I would say that if not the "most important" trait, certainly one of the most impressive traits that my partner has brought to our union is his ability to move toward me and toward understanding when we have a misunderstanding or disagreement, as opposed to acting out of selfishness, insecurity or fear and throwing up defenses...which create the opposite effect - moving away from one another.

Is there a single word for that?

It could be called "courage".

Emotional courage.

KnightofMists -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 8:00:54 AM)

I can't say that one character trait is necessarily more important than others... except for one exception.  Integrity!

After "Integrity"  there is a whole rath of Characteristics of a person that I admire and enjoy in a person... particularly when that person is to become involved with me.

Stated in no particular order of importance:

Open-Mindedness
Emotional Intelligience
Loyalty/Devotion
Kindness
Loving
Passion to Learn/Grow
Determination
Self-Discipline/control

and the list goes on.

plain and simple: HONESTY.

Lady Alaria -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 12:35:53 PM)

Hmm
2 for me are equally important. Passion and Compassion.

Passion. Zest for life, a need to feel, a need to be. A striving, rising, aching need to achieve and do, to create and experience. An ability, and a need, to be fully present, in moments of shared bliss.

Compassion. A sense that we are all equal, and deserving of love. An ability to see through the eyes of those around you, to at least try, and try, and try again to understand why a person might feel and act and live as they do, and in understanding, to accept.

MissUnleaded -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 12:51:05 PM)

I'm surprised so many people were able to answer this with such apparent ease.  I could not list one character trait which I consider to be of utmost importance in a partner.

For instance, he can be as honest as the day is long, but if he doesn't have the other qualities I need (intelligence, sense of humour, intellectual curiosity, kindness to animals, etc etc) I'd rather not even know the guy, much less have him as a partner.

So in my opinion there is never one trait which is more important than all others.  They all need to be there for him to be worthy.

And that isn't cheating.  It's being honest.  [8D]

Honesty and personal accountability are surely the most important elements within a relationship. These attributes are best when they coexist.

Bring to a relationship with me

Ha!

Intolerance.

Squeakers -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 2:55:01 PM)

Just one character trait would not be enough I would have to take the whole person into account.

Hisgirlforever -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 3:07:27 PM)

I would have to say honesty.  I need to trust in my Dom if I am going to submit.  I trust my Daddy with my life and I can only do this because he is honest with me and himself.

I've always found nakedness to be an overwhelmingly charming characteristic.

MistressDolly -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 5:21:28 PM)

Integrity is at the top of the list for me.

behindmirrors -> RE: character traits (11/21/2006 8:56:48 PM)

I'm with LadyAlaria- Passion.

To me, a life without passion is a life not worth living. The people I respect, admire, and have the highest degree of compatability with are those who are passionate about something- and they understand, cherish, and respect that passion.
