Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year...Many consider it the "official" beginning of the holiday season...Most retailers will open very early, even as early as 6am, and usually provide massive discounts on their products...Sooo...who shops on Black Friday?? Do you fall into one of the most busiest times to shop?

*** I will probably stay at home, I can't stand all the crowds!

youngsub1985 -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 7:59:06 PM)

I work in a retail store and am scheduled to work that day.  I am not looking forward to that.

wetsub4u -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 8:15:24 PM)

i work in a bank so i won't be doing any shopping but my daughter will be out there .. some places opening as early as 5am!

i do have one query though .. where did the 'Black Friday' name come from??

cabernet -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 8:27:45 PM)

The way I understand it is that they call it Black Friday because it is such a money making day.  You know how you hear about businesses being "in the black" meaning that they are making money, it's because in the old days when you kept your bookkeeping records in a ledger they would write in black when making money.  When losing money it would be in red, which is where the term "in the red" comes from.  The Friday after Thanksgiving is such a big money maker that it puts a lot of companies back "in the black."

Lorelei115 -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 8:34:51 PM)

I make 90 percent of my christmas gifts. The other 10 percent I buy online. NO crowds for me! I actually tend to get really claustrophobic in large groups of people like that.

wetsub4u -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 8:35:35 PM)

Thanks cabernet, certainly makes sense now.   i guess that makes it a Red Fridy for those sale seekers that day ;-)

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 9:55:36 PM)

I get all nervous and frustrated in large crowds so I know what you mean Lorelei..I like to go to the mall when noone is there, like a Tuesday morning....I need my elbow room!!!

CrazyC -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 10:19:30 PM)

I love the free stuff!!! :D So i'll be there. It is great standing in live, chatting with other crazy ladies, and getting free stuff. I also get alot of stuff of way cheep.

The way to do it and enjoy it. Is only go for the free stuff, and if you find something for way cheep grab it. I never go with a shopping list in hand, and NEVER try for the things EVERY one wants. But then i never spend more the $10 on gift, but they are always worth at least $20 or more. Bargan shopper...woohoo!

sub4hire -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 10:44:57 PM)

I used to....haven't in year's.  Though this year I might.  A local store has one of those digital picture frames on sale for 75 dollars.  I've considered building one for Doug's grandmother and never gotten around to it.  With it being such a bargain this year I might just have to buy it for her.
It would be so nice for her to have a slide show at all times of the photo's we take of the family.  Easily changed out...just scrolling by.

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 10:46:38 PM)

I will be there, pushing and shoving with the rest of them.[:D]

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Black Friday (11/21/2006 10:48:59 PM)

I am working Black Friday. We open an hour early, and have a 7 hour sale with REALLY awesome prices on stuff.  It should be interesting.  Since we are a relatively new store, and in a new housing area that isnt terribly moved in yet... I think the management has far higher expectations for our sales than we will really see... but hey

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 4:27:51 AM)

I am heading to the mall this morning...avoid the rush ( or so i think ).

siamsa24 -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 5:02:51 AM)

I am working two retail stores that day, one overnight and the other starting at 6:00.

I am begging all the shoppers out there to not be an asshole.  The employees are stressed and most of them are working 12-hour shifts that day.  Many of them did not get to spend the holiday witht their family (both my jobs are open Thanksgiving) and they are doing their best.  It is amazing how many people feel that they can be totally mean and rude to the employees during these sales (I am not saying that anyone here would do it, but they might)

pahunkboy -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 5:27:48 AM)

Well- here is my oinion.

local retailers here are NOW OPEN ON THANKSGIVEN. this bastardizes one of the few remaining holidays we had left!

I used to try to "regift".

one year i bought everyone a gift cert for teh chinese buffet- they loved it.

my sister loves to shop= so one christmas i just said ok- ill kick in $40- you shop.

basically family and friends have everything they could every want- in terms of material things.

i much prefer a no reason at all- flowers or token gift.  an unexpected card- for no reason at all.

i HATE what modern society has done to Christmas.

yould think we were wll laura engals on little house on the praiare. most of us could stand to declutter home and life.

i love my teck toys. if you stole a color tv set in 1970.  criminal charges. now that same item is electronic waste- dispose of it improperly= possible crimnal charges!

society need more love. more random acts of kindness.  not more malls

!!!!!

this feeling grows more dreadful each year.

i hate this part of modern life.

I will not leave the farm except on horseback........to ride. I refuse to shop with masses of rude pushy assholes. I detest malls, I mean HATE, malls.

I do most of my shopping online or in antique shops during lunch breaks at work.

MzTlaz -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 7:18:30 AM)

Like Lorelei I make most of the gifts I give and shop online for the rest....who needs the stress of crowds?  As a floral designer I'm busy right now and looking forward to four days off!!!

I miss the smell of the flower shop I used to work in!

ownedgirlie -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 7:25:04 AM)

I am not a fan of crowds at all, and never shop on black Friday.  The idea of doing so is really unappealing to me.

im with you!  teh mall is one of the silliest inventions of our time.

i love flea makrets, thrift stores, and prime dumpster diving grounds.  i have basic tools- and am always puttering around my house.  not rentavating- just gotta have tools.

recently a guy i talked to on a dating site- was like "every boyfriend i build a house for leaves me and keeps teh house" add to that - the fact that his work is not cookie cutter subdivision, it is frank loydd wright stuff.   amigos!  help me reel this one INNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!

kyraofMists -> RE: Black Friday (11/22/2006 12:56:50 PM)

We won't be shopping that day; we are driving down to the Keys for the weekend.  Besides, I am practically done with all my shopping.  I started early this year.
