WyrdRich -> Wrong part dammit (11/23/2006 10:55:50 AM)

Just a venting, but I hate it when this happens.  The starter went out in my car a couple days ago.  I bought a new one but I just haven't had the time and energy to replace it until the day off today.  So I slept in until 6:30 (yes, at this point, getting up at dawn is sleeping in), removed the old starter while cussing the damn Japanese engineers and the electrical plug on the new one is wrong.

You'd think at least one auto parts place would open wouldn't you?  Dammit, dammit, dammit!

As a person who gets work for my favorite mechanic, we are leaning toward always taking the old part out and to the parts store. Not even to avoid the core charge.

He did an alternator the other week, the mounting depth was of a bit and it tore up the serpantine belt. So a few days later he had to redo the job. You couldn't tell it was off, but it was just enough to throw the belt off and tear it up.

Personally, I am looking for am older car.

Taking the old one in is the much better way to go, it just wasn't really an option this time.  It didn't give me a few days warning with spotty performance and I found it bad at 3 am.  I'm leery of bypassing the solenoid on modern vehicles with all the electronics, so took the wife's car and got the replacement ordered by phone.

There is probably a little plug adaptor, hanging in the aisle of every good auto parts place in town, but none of the owners are greedy enough to be open on Thanksgiving.  Damn Commie, Pinko, Socialist business practices!  Here I am, in the evil Capitalist empire, and not one damn Republican is exploiting his workers by making them work on a holiday!  There is profit to be had dammit!

How complex a wiring harness can a starter have? Sounds like a cut & splice job to me... cheaper than burning the gas to drive back to the store, most times.
And believe me, an older car won't solve that particular problem... i've had parts guys try to sell me "replacement parts" that hadn't even been invented when my cars were out of warranty. Gotta know your stuff.

The car is sitting safely in my driveway, I'd rather do it right than twice.  Besides, any kind of cut and splice will void the warranty on the new starter, and I plan to be driving this beast a long time yet.

Careful, Rich.  Might start a political debate on a holiday!  [:D]

Nah, we are all completely OD'd on that sedative (tryptophan?) that is found in turkey.  My faith in the evil capitalists is restored though, the clerks at the grocery store weren't even making overtime today.

Hate to micturate in your stuffing, WyrdRich, but I had the day off AND I get paid for today the Thursday after next regardless.

Had I worked today, I would have also been paid time and a half next Thursday AND gotten paid for today the Thursday after next.

Funny you should bring up the union thing, the clerks (checker and bagger, neither working very hard) are under the new union contract.  The contract for the more senior employees calls for triple-time pay on holidays... but none of those senior employees seemed to be working.
