I know very, very little about alcohol but I've recently realized that I like wine...a lot.  My current favorite is Lambrusco Riunite, a very soft (and cheap LOL) red wine.

What about you?

Rum and Coke, Corona and Tecate, and almost any white wine, and a few reds.  I like Zinfandel, Rose, Burgundy, and even some of the Sangrias that are heavy and fruity.

I think it is important to try new tastes in all things, alcohols as well as other beverage and food items.  Each palate is different, and life is too short to not cater to one's palate, one's tastebuds, whenever possible.

Savor life!!

As far as alcohol drinks, I really like Long Island Iced Teas ( basically cause they don't taste like alcohol).

Fitznicely -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/23/2006 11:48:48 PM)

I've just discovered Mead. Honey wine, something around 11-12% ABV. My gods is it gorgeous!

I could do some serious liver damage with that stuff...

You drank a bottle of Jack??? And at age 15???

Geez... you're freaking lucky you're even here to tell us about it... unless you are talking about a half-pint bottle or one of those little airline bottles... [;)]

At age 15, I drank almost 2/3rds of a bottle (quart) of Old Grand Dad (it was the only crap we could steal that night) and was sick for a freaking week. I've never puked so much since, and I couldn't even smell whiskey without gagging for years afterwards.

Ha!  The only time I ever got utterly and shamefully legless was courtesy of Jack.  Age 18, two-day camping trip one summer...  I and 7 others had been planning this trip and looking forward to it for months.  The others were all heavy drinkers, and planned to spend the entire 2 days wasted.  So, on the way there, and in complete denial as to my ability to handle anything beyond one or two drinks, I rather optimistically bought both a bottle of JD and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red - full size of course, I didn't want to look like a light weight  : )

After three hours driving along the beach in a dirty, dusty old four-wheel drive, we got to where we were going at 1pm, and set up camp. Being teenagers and having no self-control whatsoever, we all headed straight for the esky.  I started in on the Jack Daniels - much more cautiously than anyone else, I might add - and played esky b*tch for about half an hour.  Half a bottle in, everything gets fuzzy.  And by fuzzy, I mean blank. I have one memory from when it started to get dark (around 7) of feeling paranoid and thinking someone was going to try and steal my Johnnie Walker, so I walked along the beach for a bit and then buried the (unopened) bottle in the sand.  I  figured (in my compromised state) that I'd be able to come back and dig it up when I was more capable of defending it. [8|]  For whatever reason, I didn't bother putting a marker where I buried it...

The next morning, while I was quietly dying inside my tent, someone popped their head inside and said that everyone was really hungover and had ran out of alcohol and could they have mine?  "Go ahead, I'll pay you to take it.  I'm never drinking again ...etc".  In between pathetic attempts to breathe, and even more dismal attempts to sit up, I explained that I buried it in the sand.  Where? "I don't know."  Near the campsite, or?  "Maybe."  I promptly passed out again.  I woke up about an hour later, and courted death by risking the two metre crawl to the front door of the tent.  I seriously, actually thought I'd never be able to walk again, but I was so damn thirsty I was willing to crawl in the sand for the 100 metres or so to the ocean  to drink the sea water...  Brave sentiments, but I only managed about ten metres before I kind of flopped down on the wet sand.  Did I mention it was raining?  So I was laying there face down in the rain, wet sand in my ears and my hair, panting and fighting the urge to swallow my own tongue, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I summoned the energy to turn my head to the side, and there is four of the others, on all fours, soaking wet and actually digging in the sand!  They had been looking for the Johnnie Walker for an hour... [:D]

At that point, though I was clearly in no position to judge, I realised I needed some new friends [8D]  And I've not drank Jack Daniels since.

CalliopePurple -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/23/2006 11:56:02 PM)

Not much of an alcohol person, but I rang in my 21st last weekend with raspberry rum mixed with Sprite. My drinks must be sweet and/or fruity...like my guys.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/23/2006 11:58:04 PM)

I prefer vodka and cranberry, or orange. Or a very soda-heavy jack and coke

Fitz, where did you get MEAD?  it is truly wonderful stuff but usually the best is homemade.  It doesn't keep well, and it is very hard to find.

And it is VERY wicked.  As you've noted, the sugar content is high enough to ferment to 10%+  (I once made a batch that clocked in at 16%, or equal to most cordials), where fruit wines rarely get above 7%.  That extra percentage will whip your butt.  PLUS the esters, glycerine, and organics that the fermenting of honey leaves in the mix make for the most hellish hangovers known to man.

Remember, those great Norse myths of Valhalla (filled with virgins!), the Twilight of the Gods, Odin with his hammer?  Norse poets tripping on mead.  And the hangovers?   May I quote from a summary of the "end of the world":

quote:

The Old Norse vision of the future is bleak. In the end, it was believed, the forces of chaos will outnumber and overcome the divine and human guardians of order. Loki and his monstrous children will burst their bonds; the dead will sail from Niflheim to attack the living. Heimdall, the watchman of the gods, will summon the heavenly host with a blast on his horn. Then will ensue a final battle between order and chaos (Ragnarök), which the gods will lose, as is their fate. The gods, aware of this, will gather the finest warriors, the Einherjar, to fight on their side when the day comes, but in the end they will be powerless to prevent the world from descending into the chaos out of which it has once emerged; the gods and their world will be destroyed. Odin himself will be swallowed by Fenrir.

That, my friend, is the day after a good mead binge.  Drink up!

ADomDoc -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 12:16:43 AM)

If you want a good shopping list ... try some of these that I've found are very good OR have been introduced to by friends .

Wines:  Pinot Noir ... Robert Mondavi is fairly good at a reasonable price .
.. though I think HRM Rex Goliath Free Range is better
   Mark West is also good

A good Retsina ... not the wimpy touristy stuff ... esp when eating a Spinach, Feta, Jalapeno & Anchovy pizza

Amarone by Masi

Vermouth - Martini & Rossi Sweet Red

Rheinhessen, Rheingau, Pfaelzers & Nahe wines ... Auslese's if I can get 'em

Black Spanish from Dry Comal Creek Winery ... their White/Black is nice but a bit sweet
and their Dry Comal Creek Red is very complex ... an excellent wine

Wine with chocolate: Pineto ... Brachetto D'Acqui from Strevi, IT

Sweet sparkling Red: Rosa Regale

Lambic:  Lindemann's Cassis, their Peche is maybe their 2nd best

Beers: Pilsner Uerquell for sure,
  Murphy's Stout
  Real Ale Coffee Porter
A good IPA, such as Lagunitas
Weihestephaner Kristall is the best Weizen I've had
New Belgium Skinny Dip is decent
  Old Speckled Hen
   Andechserbraeu Dunkles aus Kloster Andechs
For a reliable fallback, Shiner Bock or Shiner Dunkelweizen ... they also make the best Light Beer

Black & Tan  -- or --  Black & White

Sipping Bitters ... such as Unicum

Scotch:  Speysides such as Glenmorangie Sherrywood aged 12 yr old
Islays such as Bruichladdich, or Lagavulin 16

Irish Single Malt: Bushmill's 16

Vodka: unquestionably Tito's from Austin TX

Brandy: Clear Creek Pear Brandy
            A good Calvados or Armagnac
            Don Pedro Domecq is decent

Tequila:  Definitely Tres Magueyes Reposado when I can find it.
              Chinaco Reposado in a pinch
(with a good Sangrita, naturally ... NOT Sangria)

Gin:  Blue Sapphire, Bombay in a pinch

Bourbon: Woodford Reserve ... or Wild Turkey Rare Breed

Rum: Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum
Ron Anejo Pampero Aniversario  .. or .. Santa Teresa 1796 Antiguo
Flor de Cana 7yr old or Bacardi 8 for mixing

Mixed Drinks: a good Margarita or Daiquiri, Gin & Tonic, maybe an Appletini

ADomDoc -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 12:19:53 AM)

Am sure you could mail-order a decent Mead from Peasoup Anderson's in California (in or near Solvang?) ... as I recall, they made their own.  Haven't been there in over a decade.

MissyRane -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 2:15:40 AM)

Red wine, white wine, champagne, beer (san miguel or carlsberg are my favs), baccardi breezer, smirnoff, most every single cocktail except pina colada I can't understand how people can drink that disgusting..ew.. (San Francisco, the alcoholic type of it is delicccccccciousssssssss..but for the sober ones yeah the nonalcoholic type of it is also good but there's some taste missing that I think just makes the drink),  bailey's, tequila, sambuca, apple shots (I could drink those endlessly heh), Opal, Vodka, Jack Daniel's, Hot n Sweet but then most everything goes

....ok I think I'm started scaring myself with this list

jblack -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 2:26:47 AM)

Stoli vodka
Tanqueray gin

Love either of the above mixed with ever so much: tonic, soda, lime juice, vermouth, sweet 'n' sour, collins mix, diet Sprite, orange juice, tomato juice, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, each other, pomegranate juice, iced tea, lemonade, etc., etc. I'll have 'em on the rocks if I'm in a bad mood. A shot right out of the bottle if I'm in a really, really bad mood.

But for sweeter or after dinner drinks, it's Bailey's, Kaluha, or (and now for something completely different) port.

Never been too much of a wine or beer drinker, though. And, for all my love of cocktails, I can never appreciate the brown liquors or tequila (a different beast altogether).

Quivver -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 3:58:50 AM)

another old bartender here.  my list is short..  good scotch~rocks, dark beer~warm.  I love tequila but the results are like that country song, (my clothes come off).  And there's always wine in the fridge to drink or cook with.  BUT, Jack at 15 isnt uncomon at all, to this day I cant even smell the stuff without wanting to heave!

There's a "Traditional" German Market in our city during the christmas period, with all kinds of wonderful food and drink on offer. One stall happens to specialise in Mead. I'm fully intending to stock up before it closes on Dec 22nd.

Don't worry about it not keeping well...it won't last long [;)]

ADomDoc: As I'm in the UK, I think I may be slightly outside of Peasoup Anderson's delivery area.

There's a few UK-based online suppliers I could try out, plus my father has been known to do a bit of homebrewing, so I might tap him for his old kit...

Alcholol and I do not mix. The last time I had a drink I was 15; I drank a bottle of Jack...never again...

if I could drink, I would have to stick with Jack though...I really like how it tastes

Yes, a whole bottle; and yes, I am very lucky, in more ways than one, that I am still here to talk about today. Suffice it say that I just had a really fucked up childhood [&:]

Needless to say, my actions upon finishing the bottle were more than enough to keep me from ever drinking again

wandersalone -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 7:00:22 AM)

I very rarely drink alcohol any more though when I do I like a glass of a nice merlot

LaTigresse -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 7:01:54 AM)

I like alot of different alchoholic beverages as long as they are A) not sweet...except good port B) not beer.

As is my fucked up lot in life I tend to always prefer the more expensive smoooooth varieties of whatever it is I am in the mood for. As for what I drink the most of, I would say dry red wine.

I am quite a lightweight fortunately. If I drink too much I spew. I hate to spew. Sooooo, I have learned to recognize when I have had enough and it's time to switch to water. I am lucky and have never had a hangover. Not that I have not had opportunity to just never have.

I used to like Jack but my stomach doesn't, I switched to buying aged Makers Mark and like it better, its mellower. I would not however recommend mixing a hefty amount in a cup of chamomile tea and taking two Nyquil gelcaps......can we say nighty nite LeeAnn?

I love gin (Cascade Mountain is OMG) in the summer.......some vodkas also.

Lots of other stuff, just whatever strikes my fancy at the time.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: Favorite kind of alcohol? (11/24/2006 8:51:51 AM)

I adore white wines, especially Chardonnay.

There are also several mixed drinks I like, but tend to stay away from them due to the astronimical calorie counts.  Some of the ones I like are Margaritas, Pina Coladas, Scorpions, White Russians, Black Russians, and Tequila Sunrises.
