I've got pull-downs for "Font Fsce" and "Font Size," then a question-mark button and a "Quote Original" button. No ABC, alas. I guess I'm on my own for spelling! Thanks for the help, though!

Same here, except I don't have a question-mark, I have " <%,  a "text cloud" like they use in comics," but no ABC. sigh.  I am a grammar snob, but a horrible typist, and a mediocre speller, so I really rely on spell check. I just typed this in “word” because I wasn’t sure if I spelled mediocre right. Somebody once told me a bout a link where I could get a spell check for whatever I was typing. Does anybody know about that?

I'm picky about spelling and grammar too. Typos are one thing (though typically one should be able to proof what they have written before hitting 'send') but if you know your spelling is atrocious, for the love of Pete, use spellcheck! Of course, spelling isn't nearly as much of an issue as those people who write rambling posts that we can't decifer without the help of Saint Benji or Celeste.
Spell check is only as good as the typist.  One might type, "Ewe no watt eye mean" and all of the words are correct.  Of course they are the wrong words, but they are spelled right.  I love to see a well written post, but more than anything, I too want to read a post where the writer can accurately convey their thoughts to the readers.

marieToo -> RE: New rule! If you cannot spell it..... (11/26/2006 9:01:27 PM)

My spell check doesn't work here.  I guess as far as spelling goes, Im probably alittle better than the average Joe, so I don't worry much about that, but I really suck at punctuation and Im pretty bad with run-on sentences and honestly, my typing skills suck, therefore I simply proofread before I hit send.  Sometimes the mistakes get past me.  but oh well....phuck it.  I can spell the important words like hor, khunt and coksuker, so I think that should carry me well around here.

Zensee -> RE: New rule! If you cannot spell it..... (11/26/2006 9:42:45 PM)

what about paragraphs and punctuation anybody bitch about paragraphs yet  don't get me started on paragraphs too late i mean is it too much trouble to carve up the crucial thoughts pouring out of your head into something smaller than novella sized chunks or do you expect me to wade into it with a machete i mean really do you use catch phrases instead of the friggin’ enter key i mean why the fuck should i learn a brand spankin’ new grammar every time i open an email just to suffer the bounty of your wisdom i mean how about a period maybe huh i mean one of these ---> . <--- would that be too much for you to do huh peck out a little mental breath for your victims i mean you don’t have to go all out and use commas you know ---> , <--- i mean that would probably trigger an aneurysm and you are obviously too delicate to even stretch out that little finger you know stretch it out and press the FUKKIN' SHIFT KEY once in a while i mean really don’t get me started on paragraphs

There were dictionaries before there was spell check.

I would like to remind all that English is not a phonetic language, e.g. ghoti spells fish if you take the gh-F, o as in women, and ti as in question. George Bernard Shaw

If you cannot spell, then you are like most of the people in this land of non spellers. We are as likely to reform the orthography of our language as we are to adopt the metric system.

sleazy -> RE: New rule! If you cannot spell it..... (11/28/2006 1:34:37 AM)

I can spell (most of the time) but being a terrible typist and using at least 3 different computers all with slightly different keyboards my fingers often end up being quite dyslexic.

On the other hand if I can spell "find the perfect partner" surely i can do it eventually [:)]

This is why I almost never use a spell checker.  The most common mistakes I make are leaving the d off the word "and" or the y off the word "they," which a spell checker is useless to try to prevent.

Plus, yelling at the damn thing because it has no correct spellings for words like "obtuse" and "cretin" tends to get my knickers in a twist.

TreSwank -> RE: New rule! If you cannot spell it..... (11/29/2006 12:04:17 PM)

Is there already an "Institute For Creative Spelling?"

Fun Trivia Fact:  Robert Frost, aside from being America's best known deceased poet, is also acknowledged by editors and proofreaders to be one of history's worst spellers.  Let that fun little tidbit sink in for a moment, Ladies and Gents; one of our greatest poets couldn't spell his way out of a paper-bag!!!!  That's something for the spelling/grammar Nazis to consider for a New York minute.

After spending a half-hour in Borders perusing excerpts from the Cobain diaries, I realized that musicians aren't much better off than Mr. Frost.  Deep lyrics don't necessarily equate to meticulous syntax.  One would think that a fellow who had acquainted himself with Camille Paglia in his youth could also detect the difference between "your" (implies possession) and you're (contraction for you are).
