Hi there,

We are having a thanksgiving dinner here tonight, some guests coming over etc. Master wants me to put together a CD of american indian music, I"ve found a lot of flute type music, but what I had in mind was voice combined with drumming or something more powerful sounding than flute.

Would anyone have anything like that in mp3 format? If so, could you email me on here and I will hook up with you on yahoo or something..

If you are ok with emailing, I can connect you with my Boston partner and his wife, they have a large collection of this sort of music.

ALthough probably not soon enough for TONIGHT...so check on amazon, they often have songs to download.

Anyway, I once asked him for some Indian music and I mused aloud if he played anything.

"Yeah. Piano," he said. "Would you like to hear?"

"Yeah! That'd be great!" I didn't know there was paino in Indian music. He sat down on the bench and played every Randy Newman song he knew.

"That wasn't what I was expecting," I told him.

"It wasn't?"

"No."

"What were you expecting?"

"Indian music."

"Well duh. Randy Newman isn't an Indian."

I've always liked Carlos Nakai who uses both the drums and flute. Matter of fact....I often fall soundly asleep to it.  ; }

I know this wont help for your thanksgiving dinner music,however; I thought I would share these wonderful Native American musicians with you. I know of many more but these are some of my personal favorites.

Hey thanks for the replies. After I posted that I didn't get back to the computer in time..but hey. I did find some music though, which was excellent [:)] The evening was wonderful.

Well, I'm in love with traditional native american music now, so I might follow up on some of those suggestions for the future [:)]

O'siyo!  Heres a great station that plays a wide variety of NA music, including traditional tribals.

lmao...being Native I found that extremely funny.  Whenever anyone asks what my Native name is...I always tell them what my real first name is.  Making very clear that it is not Running Deer or She of too Many Shoes.  [:D]

I was just checking back on this thread, thanks for the extra replies :) It was interesting listening to the native american music, some of their words were very similar to sanskrit and the beats and chants sounded very similar in a lot of ways to hindu ones..(interesting huh)..or created/invoked a similar type of atmosphere..

I have to admit I am intrigued....will have to check out North American Indian music....I am only familiar with South American Indian music (well a mix anyhow I suppose), with Andean flutes, and melodies such as "El Condor Pasa", etc....

Here is a great source of Native Music    http://www.earthsongs.net/     My favorite Native artist is probably John Trudell...another great one is a band from Alaska called Pamuya...
