Aylee, not sure that's right since who would the others be on that list?  And if there are others, what makes these four stand out from the others on that short list?

ETA: Some research shows that Truman did have a VP named Alben Barkley.  (Who knew that weird factoid?) So, you haven't got it quite right..... but that same research shows you're on the right track. LOL!

Sorry. . . I guess that it is not a unique quartet.

John Tyler served for 47 months without a VP;
Millard Fillmore for 32 months;
Calvin Coolidge for 19 months;
Harry S. Truman for 45 months;

Then there is also:

Andrew Johnson for 47 months;
Chester Arthur for 41 months;
Theodore Roosevelt for 42 months;
Lyndon B. Johnson for 14 months.

Okay, you've got the 8 that had no VP.  BUT!  That's only leading in the right direction.

What makes the first four (in your list) different from the 2nd four?

HINT:  Nothing to do with the time spent without a VP.

Aylee -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/15/2010 4:37:51 PM)

How about another hint?

Pweeeeeeeeeeease?

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/15/2010 7:13:36 PM)

They all inherited the Presidency from predecessors who died naturally.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/15/2010 8:20:44 PM)

Aylee: The hint you asked for WAS going to be:  Consider WHY they had no Veeps.....

Short step to respond: Because they (all eight) succeeded Presidents that died in office.

Then to distinguish the quartet from the others, JKB pops out as succeeding JFK.  Most know that Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln, so maybe the 2nd four were successors to Presidents that were assassinated. (Research easily confirms that.)

And the last step is:  How does a Veep become President if his successor was NOT assassinated?

Answer:  Drum roll, please.........................

NEW QUARTET:

Belgium
Canada
Netherlands
Spain

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 7:25:36 PM)

The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, along with Norway, Sweden and South Africa, are the only countries in which the legal status of same-sex marriages is exactly the same as that of opposite-sex marriages.

You got it, Tim. Bravo!

Your turn.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 7:38:16 PM)

New Quartet:

Tanzania
Russia
New Guinea
Argentina

Aylee -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 7:59:01 PM)

They all end in the letter "a"?

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 8:00:26 PM)

They have something much bigger in common.

That was a hint.

Aylee -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 8:53:17 PM)

Mining. . . Mountains. . . they are all hiring for Earthmover Mechanics.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 8:59:40 PM)

Go with the mountains. The big ones....

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/16/2010 11:09:41 PM)

NO quartet in hand, so I'll regret this:

Seven Summits

The highest mountains of each continent (the Seven Summits):

Summit                                         Elevation m                   Continent                 Range                     Country
===============                   =============         =======              ========             ============
Kilimanjaro (Kibo Summit)            5,895 (19,341 ft)           Africa                     Kilimanjaro              Tanzania
Vinson Massif                               4,897 (16,500 ft)            Antarctica              Ellsworth Mountains  n/a (claimed by Chile)
Carstenz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya)    4,884 (16,024 ft)           Oceania                 The Sudirman Range  Indonesia
Everest                                         8,848 (29,035 ft)              Asia                      Himalayas                Nepal
Elbrus                                          5,642 (18,510ft)                Europe                 Caucasus                 Russian Federation
Mount McKinley (Denali)              6,194 (20,320 ft)             North America      Alaska Range          United States
Aconcagua                                    6,962 (22,841 ft)             South America       Andes                    Argentina

Lance,

You are correct. Your source, though, has sloppy errors.

Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Oceania, is in New Guinea, not Indonesia.
And Mt. Everest straddles both Nepal and China.

But yes, each of these countries are home to the highest mountains in their respective continents,
Africa, Europe, Oceania and South America.

Your turn to ascend with a new quartet.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/17/2010 9:12:38 PM)

Told you I'd regret it..... Sorry 'bout the delay.  Anyway, here we go on another up-lifting journey.

George Washington
James Monroe
Dwight Eisenhower
Franklin Pierce

EbonyWood -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/17/2010 9:25:06 PM)

All peaks in the Appalachians? The 4 highest?

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/17/2010 9:37:25 PM)

A little more direct(ion) and you've got it Mr. Wood!

I was in a hurried state in order to come up with something.......

See how I combined the Presidents and mountains (of the last two puzzles)?  How very, very clever..... No?  Well, never mind......

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/17/2010 9:49:00 PM)

The Presidential Range is a mountain range located in the White Mountains of the of New Hampshire.  It includes Mt Pierce, Mt Monroe, Mt Eisenhower, and Mt Washington - named for the listed Presidents.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (2/17/2010 10:23:16 PM)

And fluff snatches the win.... I was looking for "Northern Presidentials," (trying to give more direction.)  But New Hampshire works well 'nuff. <see, I was in a state.... get it?  Bleah!>
