Quick Internet research.
Infoplease even fills in the current names.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0101032.html

The Presidential Succession Act of 1947, signed by President Harry Truman, changed the order again to what it is today. The cabinet members are ordered in the line of succession according to the date their offices were established.

Prior to the ratification of the 25th Amendment in 1967, there was no provision for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency. When a president died in office, the vice president succeeded him, and the vice presidency then remained vacant. The first vice president to take office under the new procedure was Gerald Ford, who was nominated by Nixon on Oct. 12, 1973, and confirmed by Congress the following Dec. 6.

The Vice President Joseph Biden
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
President pro tempore of the Senate1 Robert Byrd
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates
Attorney General Eric Holder
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack
Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke
Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis
Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan
Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood
Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano

According to the Presidential Succession Act of 1792, the Senate president pro tempore1 was next in line after the vice president to succeed to the presidency, followed by the Speaker of the House.

In 1886, however, Congress changed the order of presidential succession, replacing the president pro tempore and the Speaker with the cabinet officers. Proponents of this change argued that the congressional leaders lacked executive experience, and none had served as president, while six former secretaries of state had later been elected to that office.

Note: It's the AMERICAN Ambassador to Russia .... NOT the Russian Ambassador to The United States of America.

Yes, blew my mind also.  I knew the Cabinet was in order of the "founding" of the posts.  I didn't know Ambassadors were even in the running. LOL!

Of course, Byrd is President Pro Tempore of the Senate and has been for many years.  Fascinating bio....... For example only living Senator to have voted on Hawaii's admission to the union.  Senator longer than some of his colleagues are old. etc.

So, Byrd, Clinton and two other Cabinet members - all in order - was a give-away as to WHAT to research (and confirm.)

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 9:50:39 AM)

And now, back to our regularly scheduled quartet game.....

quote:

And a throw-away:

Juneau
Phoenix
Birmingham
Little Rock

Yes, state capitol cities, but what makes these four a unique quartet amongst the 50 state capitol cities?

quote:

ORIGINAL: stella41b

All four cities lie at the foot of mountains?

Juneau lies at the foot of Mount Juneau.
Phoenix lies at the foot of the McDowell Mountains
Birmingham lies at the foot of Red Mountain (part of the Appalachian Foothills)
Little Rock lies at the foot of Pinnacle Mountain

Nope: A UNIQUE quartet - and so the fact that Denver is the State Capitol of Colorado and lies at the foot of the Rockies makes your answer "Kewl, but wrong."

Way too easy to give even the slightest of a hint! (And, no, that's not a hidden clue. - I really mean it - I can't think of a hint without giving it away.)

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 9:55:51 AM)

If someone wants to research the answer to Lance's quartet, start at the very beginning, at the "A"s.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 12:16:05 PM)

Yep.  See... told you it was way too easy.  The quartet is the four state Capitol cities belonging to the four states that start with A...

Alaska's state capitol city is Juneau
Arizona's state capitol city is Phoenix
Alabama's state capitol city is Birmingham
Arkansas's state capitol city is Little Rock

Since there are no other state name's starting with A, the quartet is unique.

Take it away, MM.

<edited for spelling >

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 12:37:56 PM)

New Quartet:

anzad
kouco
kountougi
tahardent

[specific commonality, please]

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 1:21:11 PM)

African drums?

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/18/2010 1:47:52 PM)

They are African. They are instruments.

But they are not drums.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 7:59:34 AM)

And really, that's a lot of hint right there. But just in case...

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 9:31:35 AM)

So let's see....they're African, they're instruments, they aren't drums, and the two pictured here look like some sort of ethnic l....lu........lut.........

Gosh, what could it be?????

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 11:56:41 AM)

Well, somebody PM me when you get it.

Wolf2Bear -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 12:22:20 PM)

They are African lutes...specifically 3 stringed lutes.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 3:19:42 PM)

They are indeed! Not all three stringed--one of them is even one stringed--but African lutes was the answer I was seeking.

So well done--and it's now your turn!

Wolf2Bear -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 8:20:39 PM)

Next quartet:

Pablum
Cobalt bomb
Java Technology
kerosene

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 10:47:09 PM)

Canadian inventions.  DAMNIT! Now I have to think of something!!!

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/19/2010 11:16:24 PM)

OKAY!

Since I know I'm right and it's late, and I'm "tied up" for the next few days:

Bounty (paper towels)
Dove Chocolate
M&M's
Sheba (cat food)

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/20/2010 9:29:14 AM)

Hint: Not unique, maybe about 20 items total.....

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (4/20/2010 9:29:05 PM)

Hello?  Y'all get scared off?  It's trivial if you put all 4 in a google search.

HINT for the non-googlers in the crowd: Obviously, the items in the quartet can be found in most grocery stores.  Almost all (if not all) of the other items in the list of 20 (or so) can also be found there.  If I had written some other candies in the quartet, y'all would have had it quickly.
